as someone very new to archery I really appreciate your videos, your attention to detail for every aspect of the bow itself to stance and etc., etc.. You don't assume that someone already knows the vocabulary either. Each video is VERY comprehensive, step by step with the reasoning/physics behind it. You are a great teacher. It's hard to find good traditional bow hunting or archery information, isn't it? Online resources have really made a difference no doubt, the physical businesses have all but disappeared.

I want to say that your channel is amazing and I am using it as a tool as I try to learn about something that I THOUGHT I knew so much about, hahaha. The information you are providing to help people understand the real depth of the sport/craft is fantastic. You can just buy a bow. I think it is important to know how to use the tools that you aquire and you have very good info about things that people like, me, have never known about. I grew up shooting, my whole life... Was never taught or showed any of this or any of the terminology or metrics. Still fun. But knowing, is half the battle, lmao.

Your older vids were the ones that first got me building and shooting self bows. This new series is a great f review. Thanks for all of them, Clay.

Stumbly, do you exclusively use your self-made bows now that you know how to build them?

Just got a 60# "takedown" recurve for Christmas! I and my daughter have been shooting a couple of really, really old, stripped down, Bear compound bows I got off of Craigslist for 40 bucks total for a couple of years now. Not at all a compound fan, but they were dirt cheap and it's a shared activity we both really enjoy. But I digress. I have not owned a recurve for 45 years, and that old Bear bow from the 1970's had a flat shelf. The two recurves I mentioned do too. I had absolutely no idea how to shoot a bow with a convex shelf...until now. Thanks!!!! I'll use a carpenter's square and blue painter's tape to find and temporarily mark nock points until a proper bow square arrives and I learn to use thread to mark nock points. Again, thanks!

Clay I have been since 1968 with Traditional equipment. I been taught that one of greatest maintanance for bro bow is keeping string waxed & more wax which. Reduces friction sand ware of the string. I always carry tube string in back quiver and in my Danny pack. Think others would do. Thanks for your info sharers my grand kids are getting from you. They too are steering away from training wheels and now enjoy archery more.

Ive learned more watching clay than reading any books. Thanks Clay for your knowledge and for teaching this traditional art.

I agree with shooting off the shelf. I've used a number of different arrow rests over the years, and while they all have their place, off the shelf is the most efficient. It is also quicker to shoot again from the shelf. I cover the entire shelf. A good one is going to have a slight arch, so it will always have minimal contact. And you are right about many different materials being effective. Leather, felt, moleskin, the fuzzy part of velcro, etc. all work. I tried a brass nock for quite a while and didn't like it. Fingernail polish sufficed, and while it occasionally needs refreshing it didn't bother me. Recently, however, I've gone retro. I'm working with a horsebow, or some say "Mongolian", "Hungarian", or "Sythian", several different names for very similar styles, but horsebow covers them all. I'm trying to figure out if a mechanical release will take the place of the thumb release........

Buying my first bow soon, this right here is gold. Subscribed!

This helps since I'm pretty new to Archery. I own a pretty cool Recurve with 50 pound limbs on it (hunting bow) I want to get some 35 or 40 pound limbs for practice.. But either way shooting the bow is fun. Just taking it out and letting them arrows fly. Really really fun activity... I look forward to buying another bow. And then one day even a Compound bow. But traditional archery is alot more fun for me.

that lill tip on pinching the leather omg so basic so brilliant I mean lack of drag on the arrow spine. I'm buying my first good intermediate bow in couple of months a southwest archery spyder will be following your setup tips and hints cheers Clay

Nice video Clay, I have made hundreds of these bows but still learn something new when I see someone else do it. One little tip that may be helpful is that when a bow is on a long string as long as it isn't too long. It will read about the same weight as if it were braced, so if you long string it to 24" you will be about 12# heavy when you brace it.

Awesome video for us new to archery your channel is a godsend. I got ptsd and anxiety so for me archery is meditation and relaxation. Im in a bow club and loaning gear now. But am out of work so cant afford my own gear i dream of having a good recurve bow and target so i can shoot everyday would help me a lot both with the ptsd/anxiety and getting in better shape.

Cool vid, I use 1 knock, split finger so have my arrow rest on my tab, im new....ish to archery i.e tried it years ago, liked it but just got more into bike's, and didnt shoot much..now at 52 getting back into it but since i cant ride anymore its my new hobbie and i love it..had a few cross bows but like the challenge of learning a new skill..i watch a tone of archery vids as the course im taking wont start until November so for about 6 weeks been learning all i can from guys like you, and yes im subbed but dont often comment. But found the tieing knock interesting as ive found the brace ones also scratch onto the tab, well does mine so i was interested in that, so thankyou for that little trick ill probably use myself.

I am new to traditional archery and am excited to see the bow tuning video. Thank you for all of the good information!

Those are nice tips and I have to try and remember them since I am a new bow owner and is trying to set it up. I am currently trying to install the string and using the stringer seem to be difficult and I have given up on that.

All of the local Pro Shops I visit don't know much about traditional archery, and as a result when I look for things or information they get uncomfortable or in some cases impatient. Do you have any good local Pro Shops that know much about traditional archery and bowhunting?

Clay just curious, the bow used in this video, is that a stock grip, or a wood replacement grip ? I enjoyed your whole video series, not only this one video, keep up the great work

Great video Clay. Just a quick question on what that small leather loop right above the wood grip infront of the arrow shelf rest on the belly side of the riser. What does it do/for?

@Clay Hayes I have a bow that came with a string and a nock point. When I nock the arrow it doesn't "click" into the string . It slides in (too easily). When I shoot with this 45# bow the arrows seems to end up a foot or more higher than my 35# bow although I am aiming so much lower. Is it a string problem with a nock point being too low?

Hey man first off your not getting full energy transfer to your arrows and that means that it's going to your limbs and that's bad for the bow you either need to change your nock size to the proper fit or go to a shop and reserve the bow string with larger serving thread the first is better that way you can nock tune your arrows to dynamic spine and or broadheads. if you hunt but that is why you're arrows are off the nock has to be snug on the string without penchin the string.redo your string nock points as well use two this keeps the nock secure from movement when you draw the bow

Clay I need an experts knowledge! I’m super new to this but I bought a recurve bow and I just added string silencers and I also bought new arrows, and I’m getting a lot of contact with the actual riser not the shelf. My brace height is 7 1/2 inches. When it was stock it was shooting amazing but loud. My nock was at 3/8 and it was spot on and now my arrow flight is all over the place, I’m hitting my target but the arrow sometimes goes into the target at a angle, have alot of skid markets on the riser and shelf

I'm finger shooting a compound 3 under with a capture rest how can I find the best knock point height or should I just raise the rest plunger up so the arrow is straight thanks

New to traditional archery. Starting with Black Hunter 45 lbs 28 draw. Arrow is flying totally different from my compound. From the black Hunter, the arrow is starting out straight at 10 yards but curves right. I think the fletching is hitting the arrowplate. If so, how do I correct that. Are you still planning to release a video series on arrow tuning? I’m a fairly new recurve owner, and My arrow nocks are not consistent no matter how short I make the arrows. I imagine that the distance to the target also makes a difference in terms of where the nock ends up (left or right). Any insight would be great. Thx.

And the only way to keep most people watching would be to have b-list celebrities doing some kind of competition with a bunch of fake drama filler.

I'd add a small tidbit to string your bow and let it sit for a day or so to get the stretch out(if it's a new string). Really screwed me up with my first bow initially setting the nock point and a day later it was way off. Just my .02¢. Another awesome vid man. Any plans for a bow review?

Recently subscribed to your channel and love it, great videos and lots of information with no BS. On the subject of Recurve bows I’m kind of new to it (use to shoot a longbow and recurve years ago then went to compound) Anyways I want to get back into traditional and was wondering what poundage I should start out at? I was thinking either #45 or #50 should be fine? Will be doing target shooting for now

i bought a mesa mountain longbow backed with rattlesnake never had one before i usually shoot my mathews.

That is a gorgeous looking bow. I want to get back into traditional archery I’m struggling on making a decision if I want to go with an all wooden recurve bow or something like what you did which is more like all weather resistance. If I go with a metal bow or any type of bow I really want it to be traditional I would never put sites on their stabilizers any of those things. Are there more people using wooden recurve bows or are there people shifting towards these machines aluminum risers similar to what you have?

Is that the TBow which is the clone to the Hoyt Satari ?

Could you do a review on this bow... I have seen it in the TBH magazine..

The brace height shown is not actually 7" and not that "low" because it's not being measured at the typical place on the grip, where the thumb web on the hand sits when gripping the bow. It looks like if his brace height were measured in the typical place, it would be closer to 7.5 inches, a rather typical brace height for many recurve bows.

What is that small thing on your bow making it a center shot? I’m asking because I use a 3 piece bow with an aluminum riser. I know for wood bows you can glue leather but what do you recommend for mine? Thank you!

Start at 7 work up probably end up around 7 1/4- 7 1/2

The bowyer usually has a recommended brace height. Mine are usually between 6.5-7".

Excellent video sir, now that you have had this bow for a while, how do you like it. It is a good looking bow. I have made the switch back to a recurve this year, and I have tossed the idea few times on a more modern traditional bow, I just don't know for sure if I really need a bow with ILF limbs etc. Thanks again my friend and have a blessed week sir. Hoyt Satori 21" ILF riser mated to a set of DAS xtra long longbow limbs, makes for a 66" longbow. Using proper string length of 63" (subtract 3" from the distance between limb tips/string nocks) my natural brace height with an untwisted string is about 9" off the back of the shelf. There is literally no way for me to lower that brace height without using a shorter set of limbs.

@@clayhayeshunter I actually just found an article on brace height at Lancaster Archery that has a bit of info I have not seen elsewhere. It indicates that the longer the bow, the higher the proper brace height will be. So for a 66" bow, proper brace height should be 8-1/4" to 9". So, I am right in that zone on my Satori, and a bit short on my 60" Jaguar Elite.

What's the thinking on the shelf having that raised part? Why is less contact with the bow better?

Logan Woldridge Junxing F263, also known as the Big Rock Pharos. It’s my favorite bow out of all of them. That’s the F163 that you have I believe. Some American companies buy them and resell them under their own name. Still great though!

Logan Woldridge Sorry man, I got confused. the Black Hunter is totally different from the Pharos. The Pharos looks similar to the one in the video. Your’s is a wooden riser I believe. It’s an amazing bow from what I’ve heard.

Im new to recurve bow hunting and I was wondering if you break your bow down after each use? As in taking string off. I have a modern recurve bow with laminated limbs.

You should always unstring your bow. That eliminates much of the risk of accidentally cutting or damaging your string. Your bowlimbs won't suffer much set as they're laminated, but I would always unstring the bow.

The longer the arrow is in the bow the more the archer can negatively effect the flight of the arrow

For my first bow I got the Cabela's warden recurve. How would you set this up for hunting? Rest or no? Sight or no? What size arrow/tip? I hunt in very thick rainforest country.

I hunt almost exclusively with self bows. But most people shoot more modern equipment which is why I chose this bow for the demonstration.

With an ILF bow, such as the Hoyt satori, how long can it be left strung without risk of over wear and tear 4 damage to the bow in any way? Such as if it's shot everyday or every other day, can it be left strung? Or should it be unstrung when not in use

I don’t have a lot of experience with different ILF bows so I can’t offer a good comparison. But, this one shoots great and the ILF limb system is pretty darn cool.

They probably weren’t wrapped tight enough or wrapped the wrong way.
