What’s your advice for those of us who feel like a canister is our best option for space and water overflow issues? What’s the best way to create an anoxic filter with a canister? Can we use cat litter and literate in a canister?

if you could find a way so that it didn't get clogged with poop, it would work, and try and slow down the flow a little.

Bob Carter well, that's the downside of owning a sump along with a higher water evaporation. My Co2 is at 12 -bps if I had a canister Filter that would go down to 3- bps. However, it still takes me three month to use a 5lbs cylinder on my SCA aquarium.

Kevin Novak thank you so much for replying so promptly. Regarding the Co2 am I right in assuming it’s just as effective using a sump, however you are just using more Co2. If that’s the case then I’m sold on a sump.

What kind of pump are you using for the co2? Basically the co2 is connected directly to the pump and chopped by the impeller and pushed to the return pump right?

I have a drilled 240G tank that I'm planning to set up with a sump with BCBs. Should I still use a plenum along with the BCBs? I have coarse inert sand I'm planning to use for the substrate, and plan for the tank to be planted. Being a new setup should I use fertilizer of some sort, such as plant tabs in the gravel under the plants to get them started, or just rely on fish waste to feed the plants from the get go? Being a new setup without a cycled filter or any nutrients in the gravel, how should I proceed? I thought about running a couple of cycled sponge filters after the BCBs in the sump until the anoxic filter kicks in.

Tare Wade if it were me I would still make a Plenum only because of the fact to help keep the sand off the bottom of the aquarium and don’t forget to use a ground fabric so the sand won’t migrate to the bottom of the aquarium.

How do the fish get sicker up over the weir/overflow?

Dr. Novak, Do you run CO2 24/7 or just a few hours while the led light is on ? If just a few hours , would the up and down on PH bad for Discus ? Thank you .

Sunny Hua Just when the lights are on the CO2 turns on then it turns off at night. To be honest with you the Discus just doesn’t seem to mind the fluctuation of the pH and the temperature of the tank now is only about 81.5 to 82.

What pump do you use in the anoxic chamber? I’m setting up an anoxic filter and would like to know. Is it a must to have a pump in the anoxic chamber?

A small hobbiest pump @ 250 gph

I run two tanks with sumps I have a 90 with a sump running a herbie system in my sump I run the sock filter have to change it out every 3-4 days. In second chamber I am running the marine pure bio spheres just put in the chamber wondering if I am getting the same as your anoxic filter as the water doesn’t actually flow through. I would send a pic of the setup but can’t fig out how to send it here

Hey Kevin, hope all is well. Question, I'm about to build a diy sump for 240g African cichlid tank and for the anoxic zone, I can either use 2 milk crates (13"x13"x11") or 24 small baskets (6"x5"x4") both options still have at least an inch between baskets. I've read the complete explanation on how to build them for ponds online and those baskets are about 12"x12"x8", correct? So I feel like there would be a larger anoxic zone if I use the 2 milk crates, but wouldn't the 24 smaller baskets have a lot more surface area for water to move between them? I hope that makes sense

The reason we stick with smaller basket is because of the weight. If you use milk crates they will be very large and very heavy by the time you’re done with them and once you get them wet they will almost be impossible to lift up.

Hi dr novak I would like to ask you your thoughts on using like a media bag to put the kitty litter and laterite in as I have some that have zips and and will hold its contents and if I had it resting on some egg crate that I also have here at home that I can use to keep it from resting on the bottom of the tank so the water can move under and around it freely would this also possibly work ?

Dr. Novak, great videos as always. I'm definitely trying plenum and BCB. Just quick question, does low PH and temperature have impact on effectiveness of Anoxic filtration? Any reason for not just making plenum and covering with clay/laterite in anoxic filter area instead of putting basket in?

Ph has no effect or temp with the Anoxic filter. Been running one now since 1989 with the same mesh baskets.

Great stuff I have a 125 planted with a sump and running CO2 I was told not to put the CO2 in the sump can you give me some more insight when you said chop up the bubbles what are you using thank you for your time and consideration

Yes, you can make Anoxic filter in a sump.

Dr Novak, I have a question regarding the eheim canister you use with filter sock. Do you have holes drilled into the bottom of the canister to allow the water to flow through the canister?
