I've been teaching myself how to paint in oils and this is exactly the information I was looking for. I had cobbled together much of what you share here, but to see it all in one place so clearly and concisely presented is reassuring and has given me the understanding to complete work much faster and with better execution. This has allowed me to focus more on capturing the essence of whatever it is I'm trying to represent - Thank you for helping me along!

the glass from a scanner or all in one inkjet printer makes a great palette, and those are thrown out all the time.

What a good idea! The glass trays from refrigerators would work well, too, since they have beveled edges. I wonder what a good upcycled source of matte finish glass is.

Thanks for your concern! Yes, moving toward zero waste is clearly where we need to go. Traveling is one time when disposable palettes are tempting and where glass palettes are a little risky (though that's still what I use), but wood or repurposed plexiglass is an alternative. Scavenging sheets of plastic that others throw away can be used as disposable palettes if they were not recyclable and headed for the trash. The one zero waste solution that's still elusive are nitrile gloves to avoid absorbing toxic pigments. Any suggestions?

If I use a mid-toned palette, should I also cover my white, gesso’d canvas with a similarly colored mid-toned color? I have found that I can largely eliminate the use of solvents when I paint with oils. To clean my palette after a session, I use only water and Dawn dishwashing liquid. ( it must be DAWN which is the best soap). I also clean my brushes without solvents. I place a small amount of Dawn in the palm of my hand ( you can wear a glove if you like ) and press the bristles in it. Rinse and repeat until you don’t see any pigment. Then, do the same on a bar of strong white hand soap. I use Ivory. I can easily see any colored pigment that might still reside between the bristles. If you like, you can finish by using either Master’s Brush Cleaner And Restorer or Murphy’s oil soap. I,then, squeeze out the water, shape the bristles, and set the brush to dry. I have used this method which I learned from a graduate student of a fine Atelier. My brushes look and function as well as the day I bought them. Strong dish soap is formulated to cut through grease and rinse clean. Oil paint is , well...oil!

Sorry for the delay in my reply, Renzo. You probably already have your answer, but, yes, I like to match the tone of my canvas to the tone of my palette so that I can judge colors equivalently. BTW, I also used Dawn instead of toxic solvents until I experimented with spraying Dawn on insect pests and it killed the plants. I think Dawn may be way more toxic than we're lead to believe. . . unfortunately!

nice. I use a glass palette (taken from a picture frame) for the mixing, then I move the piles on my wooden palette (which I primed with lineseed oil. After that once I finish the painting session, I remove the paint left and with a rag I just rub the surface of the palette. I've been doing it for months and now my wooden palette is as smooth as glass and of a rich brown colour.

That sounds like it's really working out! Does the glass from you picture frame happen to be non-glare? It used to be that non-glare glass was readily available at craft stores or glass stores but then it got really pricey. I'm always keeping an eye out for old pictures framed with non-glare glass (but usually have to settle for glare! LOL!)

I agree that palette has to be organized, but somewhere in between it becomes chaotic. Maybe ,chaos will be reduced considerably. For a natural artist, chaos will still creep in.

  • @OldGardenArts

True, and sometimes with the chaos comes the perfect stroke in perfect color. Perhaps, the underlying organization (and accompanying understanding of color) helps facilitate that.
