@@ThePlantedTankTV question: I have used different organic ingredients with an organic soil, the tips of the roots decay or burn rapidly, and if I tear it down, the soil reeks. I’ve tried twice to do dirted tanks and failed. I need some help 😅

@J Ben Gue Long time for a reply but I noticed different regions of the United States have different ingredients in their organic soil. It even effects exact same packaging and brands. It has to do with cost and fertilizers used more available locally. I live in Oregon and have no issue with the organic top soil brand I buy. For example an organic top soil same brand and same package in texas is not actually the same ingredients as Oregon.

I have recently tested out putting a layer of biodegradable screen, similar to a window screen that is used for terrariums, as an added step before putting on sand. I wanted to see if it would hold the dirt clumps and pieces of wood in the soil. It worked yet I forgot to take account of the plant roots getting tangled on the screen. I have to just plan out when or if I should make a rescape of the tank. The screen does not prevent gas bubbles from getting trapped which is a good thing.

@@alexia5880 No, not anymore. However, I have a terrarium with aquarium plants with the same setup; mesh screen, dirt and gravel layer. So it's an emersed tank, if I were to just add water it would be almost the same thing. I forgot to mention that the screen is plastic and can degrade but not fully disintergrate since, I think it is mostly plastic. There are screens that are metal that do the same thing but they are stiff compared to the one I used.

The only thing negative about this is it is simply not deep enough for the longevity of the plants. It simply doesn’t allow for the plants roots to expand. This is only good for shoot rooted carpeting type plants. Also all the fertilizers where covered up by hardscraping. But overall I can see this method working very well after the tank has been properly cycled ( since basic dirt was used and not actual microbial rich garden soil )..... this is a beautiful tank, thank you for sharing this video.

I appreciate your comment but I completely disagree. The plant roots spread plenty enough to reach all over the bottom of the tank. When I took this tank down, there were crypt roots longer than 12 inches. The s repens roots alone were longer than 6 inches. I've never had that with basic aquasoil even after one year of growth. This tank was only set up for about 3 or 4 months. The depth of the soil really can't be any deeper for a tank this size. This setup could of easily went for over a year. I've been doing this a long time and I know what works and what doesnt. Going on 5 years in the hobby now. But like I said I do appreciate your comment!✌🙂

Hey man! Where is a good general place where I can get pool filter sand. I'm currently using fluval stratum in my 10 gallon and I have a feeling it's causing a major algae outbreak. My water has been green for weeks even after doing big water changes, it hasn't helped. I'm hoping switching to the top soil and capping it with the pool filter sand like you did in this video will fix my problems. I just want my crystal clear water back. Also where did you get your stuff for sifting out the bigger pieces of the top soil?

Topsoil isn't just completely soaked in nutrients like potting mix is. Potting mix releases a ton of ammonia in the beginning which will give most beginners a algae issue. The reason I added osmocote plus is because it a slow release so it will help the soil last longer before I have to tear it down. If you are confused on what to go with I suggest using fluval stratum aquasoil. It's a far easier method and is arguably the better method in my personal opinion and experience. ✌😁🙏
