How To Set Pultec EQP-1A For Voice-Over

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Pultec EQP-1A might be the most famous studio hardware EQ of all time. Voice-over audio engineer Lenny B walks through this unit's Universal Audio plugin (modeled) version and shows you how to take advantage of what this EQ is famous for and how it might be used for Voice-Over recordings.
The Pultec EQP-1A Plugin by Universal Audio is a three-band equalizer that controls three frequency bands simultaneously. It is famous for its unique ability to seemingly boost and cut the same frequency simultaneously, creating a resonant dip that boosts and tightens bass frequencies. This unit is equally famous for its ability to add dangerous amounts of boost without sounding bad. It is a highly sought-after tool for achieving a warm, vintage tone in audio recordings.
In this video, you’ll see a visual display with a frequency analyzer to see how this EQ can modify an audio signal. You’ll learn what each of the controls does and their effect on their respective frequency bands. Then, you’ll learn how you might best use the Pultec EQP-1A on a Voice-Over recording.

Thanks Lenny. This is by far the best Pultec EQP-1A explanation video I have seen. Especially using the scope with pink noise. I will definitely be more confident in understanding my actions when using this plugin. Big Thankyou as the Pultec can be quite strange to get you head around. Please, pretty please, the LA 2A would also be a huge bonus for grappling with older analog gear. Cheers from New Zealand

One key point that stood out to me is the frequency we set for the high and low shelf are actually the "center" of the shelf curve, not the point at which the shelf "starts" curving. The high shelf set at 5k really reached down to about 500 cycles, and likewise the low shelf set at 100 cycles reached up to nearly 1K. Very easy to confuse this with a high-pass or low-pass filter where the frequency set is much closer to the start of the shelf curve. This one is really closer to a tilt eq in the way it uses long, broad shelves. Thanks for illustrating this well. :)

Another excellent tutorial Lenny. I have (as you've probably guessed) the plugin. Love the warmth it provides and spent a long time tying to make it work with my 416 & OC818. You've given me a few tips which has already helped me to tame the 416 sibilance issues so thank you again.

Fwiw, I think both the Pultec and the LA 2 emulations are included in the UAD Essentials bundle, which is currently on sale.

Wow! This was great. I was just thinking of putting together a 2-slot channel strip with a DIY 500-series version of this. Along with another DIY VCA compressor.

Hi @thestupendouschumley, I don't own any hardware versions of a Pultec like EQ, but the idea is very enticing. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Lenny, you raised some interesting ideas about the correct or desired sound. You say, "the right answer is the sound that you like." Maybe, but we're also trying to predict the sound the client, agent, casting director, etc is going to prefer. Would you say that there is a different desired/goal sound for different genres of voice work? A lot of the processing you do for commercial VO works to make the voice "bold", "punchy", or "present". I do more long form narration, audiobooks, elearning than I do commercial or promo. Would your goal sound be different if you were mastering an audiobook than if you were mastering a radio commercial? Thanks! (looking forward to the lesson on opto compressors as well. :) )

@narrator-timothymckean I have found that trying to predict what the client, agent, casting director, etc wants is a dangerous game. That's my experience. It would often lead me in a direction that compromised my brand and sometimes have me working outside my skillset. My goal for processing tends to just amplify the emotion of the voice. And yes, that may be different for different project types. However, using the processing as an effect or style is kind of a different game. It's a great subject. Maybe deserves a longer conversation.

Hey Lenny, maybe you could have a look at APU Loudness Compressor, and maybe make a video on it?

Sorry, I don't offer settings for multiple hardware processing chains. It's just too difficult to translate the settings. My custom setting service is for plugins where I can get more precise. However, it looks like you've got some great gear!
