Release air from the fork slowly so the negative chamber has time to equalize while the positive chamber depressurizes. If your lowers get sucked up to the crown add air till you hear the hiss of the chambers equalizing then continue to slowly release pressure. This is more important for shock services as the negative chamber is fully exposed once the air can is removed and will result in a loud pop and possibly a flying air can ricocheting off the walls.

Put the new foam rings in a sandwich baggie and add just enough oil to saturated them. This avoids having to pour all that oil in a cup and then back into the oil container.

Remove the spring rings around the dust seals on your lowers with a pick and put them on the stantions ( use low tack masking tape if holding the stantions vertically. Slide the lowers on to the stantions and then replace the springs. These hold the wiper seal in tight which makes refitting them harder and likely to fold the lip over of you don't get it quite right.

I have a Fox 38 Factory fork and a Fox X2 Factory shock which are really common choices on Enduro or bigger travel trail bikes and I assume they both need serving at about the same time. Problem is that the X2 shock requires special (expensive) tools so even though the fork can be done quickly at the shop or by myself, the tools required for the X2 cost more than the shock and were changed fairly recently for the new X2 and shops need to purchase the new tools again. For me, it was faster to send it to Fox and I borrowed a shock. Fox sent me a new one (warrantee replacement) instead of servicing it. Seems like I could buy a spare shock when I need to get it serviced for less than the cost of the tools needed to service it and service the fork myself. The other problem is voiding the warrantee. (Shimano brakes requires a shop to service them or the warrantee is voided.) There are a lot of warrantee replacements done during servicing of bike components so you have to consider if the part is functioning correctly and needs servicing or is not working properly and can be replaced for free under warrantee.

Unless you’re servicing the air spring, you don’t need to let the air out of your fork! The lowers aren’t pressurized with air. You most definitely need to let the air out of your shock when servicing though.

  • @gloom.710

    8 ай бұрын

@@BoxCarBoy12 From fox/marzocci "One of the goals with the Z2 was to create a lower cost fork so there were some decisions like leaving out the foam rings and using a different rubber compound for the seals. The fork works perfectly fine without them but it does perform better with them." New seal kits come with the rings because the fork is intended to be serviced with the fox 34 kit. As for the oil volumes, the fork is spec'd for 10cc of 20wt in each leg which is enough to coat the internals but not enough to pool at the bottom. You can get away with 20cc in each leg tho. The fork uses a fox float evol air spring, it's normal for these to be serviced with 10cc of oil. The damper is a cartridge system not an open bath so that too only needs enough oil to coat the internals. I agree that these forks should come with foam rings from factory though.
