The gouges on the armature are made during the manufacturing process as part of the balancing process. You can either add weight (a little like they do when wheel balancing) or take some off.

Awesome vid bud, perfect timing my winch failed me yesterday on can opener down at Ourimbah, spending my Easter pulling it apart fault finding so perfect video to follow some steps, praying it's just a faulty solenoid

Nice work mate, it doesn't look that hard. I would like to know what those marks were you mentioned, are the meant to be there or was it from over heating?

Thanks mate! There really isn’t much to them, that hardest part was remembering how all the gears went back together 🤦🏼♂️ I’d recommend taking a photo just so you know it’s going back in properly.... I had a comment off a fella and he said the grooves are for balancing the motor🤘
