Hey Brad! The JD D160 I bought with this property this past November (you helped me install and remove a Snow Blade I purchased separately for it!) is having issues climbing the inclines I have in the yard here. Yesterday was the first time I had a chance to use it for mowing grass instead of pushing snow. I wound up having to push up a VERY gentle incline and get it back on the driveway to drive into the garage, and that's where she sits now. It's a beat up beast with just over 300 hours on it. I am NOT mechanically inclined (your videos helped me immensely), so I don't know if what's wrong is easily fixable or not. Transmission slip? Drive Belt? Transmission fan blades busted? Is it worth fixing? MY QUESTION for you is, given my yard has inclines (I won't call them "hills"), should I move out of the S100 series from JD as a replacement, and instead pivot to a Husqvarna 48" Deck c/w Differential lock? I see the JD S160 doesn't offer this... I am loathe to leave my plow, but... I need a good mower that will hold up here (we have just 1.5 acres, but much of it is treed - so maybe 1 acre to mow). What are your thoughts? Pay someone to "fix" the D160, replace with a new S160, or move to Husqvarna 24hp with Locking Diff?

I can’t say 100% what your yard looks like but it sounds like the John Deere S200 series would be the way to go or the John Deere X300 series would be a good pick. Not sure what transmissions in the Husqvarna 24 hp newer series tractors but I’m sure they’re comparable to the John Deere. The S200 and the X 300 series have the better transmissions. I do not have any videos on installing or uninstalling snowplows because I don’t recommend it at all unless you have a higher end machine. You most likely have a bad transmission, but the first thing I would check is install a new transmission drive belt and see how it feels. You may have stretched the drive belt and need a new one.

I wonder if you might have an answer to problem I’m having with a kohler 25 hp engine. Recently rebuilt. Idles seems to overrevv and the exhaust manifold gets red hot. Also has no power dies under load. Started it recently and blue smoke came out the exhaust when first started. Have checked everything compressions good different carbs valves are hydraulic working fine. No blow by. Baffling.

Impossible to diagnose a issue without seeing it but it sounds like you may have a down cylinder. Could be spark, valves, head gasket etc.

Impossible to diagnose without seeing your machine, but I can say If you use an aftermarket belt, it may be too long? Or it sounds like something else may be going on like a bent pulley or a belt guide that is not properly adjusted. Normally belts do not pop off when in use unless you have something else wrong. If your belt is falling off when you disengage the belt and engaged the belt, then you definitely have a guide that is not working properly or one that is missing.

Hi Brad, I am not sure how often you look at the comments but I have a question. The bearings that I got from Amazon are sealed bearings and as far as I know they should not need greaase as they are sealed with the grease already in them. My question is # 1 since they are sealed I don't see the point of greasing them through the tire greaase fitting if the grease never gets to the actual bearing. The other choice is to remove the seals from the inside of the bearings before installing them and then the grease the wheels as the grease would surely get to the bearngs. Love to hear your answer on which way to do the install sealed opr not !! Thank you so much for your videos. I recently retired and love to do my own maintenance on the equipment. I am learning a lot and get to tinker with the machines and so far they are still running.

There are many opinions on this subject. You can perform a search and take all into consideration to make your decision. My opinion, the sealed bearing will take grease by the pressure from greasing them (its a proven fact, watch a video on it). The other side of that is, if you do not keep grease around the bearings (like in the empty rim hub or blade mandrel), water will enter the bearing (fact, I see it all the time from people washing there machines that do not grease the blade mandrels). I would never want the hub assemble of the front wheels empty (always fill with grease). If not, water will enter, then enter the bearing and ruin it prematurely seal or no seal. The bearings made today do not have the tight tolerances as back in the day. Seals will let water in and also allow grease to be pushed in.

I accept all the advice I get from someone with experience and knowledge and dismiss my thoughts and opinions [as I should]. I have installed the roller bearings and will grease the wheels now that I know what to do. Thank you so much for spending the time you spend working and then doing the videos. Your explanations are outstanding I don’t know how you do that much and then respond to us. I am thrilled to be able to work on my machines. Keep up the great work and Thank you again. Ricardo
