How to service a quartz movement. Part 2. Assembly. ETA 955.412
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This is the second part of my two part video showing how to dissemble and re-assemble a quartz watch movement. For these videos I am using an ETA 955.412 movement which is very popular in medium to high grade watches. This watch is a Maurice Lacroix but you will find this movement in watches such as Rotary and Tag Heuer as well.

Just wanted to say a big "THANK YOU" to whoever posted and made this video as it has enabled me to do an extensive service/repair on this movement which is inside my wife's Breitling. This is the kind of stuff that is the BEST of the internet: sharing knowledge and teaching others new things. I had intended to simply change the battery. But when I got the case open I saw that the dead battery had begun leaking(!). There was corrosion everywhere inside and underneath the battery compartment. The date wheel had begun to get some corrosion on it as well that all had to be cleaned and removed. I ordered a spare movement to get a new battery separator (which had absorbed much of the corrosion) and retaining spring/clip (which I broke trying to remove the 1st time). Thanks to this step by step video, I was able to dis-assemble, clean, and re-assemble this movement. It's now happily ticking away on my wife's wrist so thanks again!
Dear Mr. Lovick, Thank you for your excellent video. I am a novice repairman with no formalized training in watch repair. I work at a tiny jewelry store in Waco, Texas. My customer had a ladies watch with an ETA 956.112 movement. The problem was that the stem kept pulling out of the watch. I had no idea of what I was doing until I saw your superb video (about a thousand times). I discovered that this movement was missing the return bar or "yoke" and that the "bolt and retaining spring" were damaged. Apparently, a previous repairman (like me) did not know what they were doing. Luckily, I had a scrap box of unwanted watches and I found an ETA 955.414 movement which had the identical parts that this watch needed. I installed the replacement parts and the watch now works properly!! I won't tell that I had to disassemble and reassemble the movement about eight times before I finally got it right. But, bottom line, I did it! I repaired the watch in large part because of your generous time used to create this video. THANK YOU AGAIN.

+Stephen Smith I do watchrepair as well. I learned from my dad a bit of skills and then just picked it up on my own after that. I now do work for 10+ Jewelry Stores. I see stuff like you mentioned all the time. Someone messed with a watch and didn't know what they were doing. Most of the time I just replace the entire movement. Even a movement like this one in this video (955.412) cost me around $25-$30. It's worth it for me and the customer to replace it with a brand new movement. It keeps me from wasting time and worrying about how many things someone else messed up. I'd rather put a new movement in it, instead of fixing someone elses mistakes. And when you mention this to the customer, they usually agree.

@@watchandjewelryloft4713 some of these eta movements are costly, in my experience if they have sat in inventory for too long they will need re-lubrication which is something I'm unsure how to do. Replacing the movement isn't always easy.

I have made a picture walkthrough of this video (www.watchrepairtalk.com/topic/13730-eta-calibre-955112-service-walkthrough/) which basically mimics and complements the video as it includes lubrication suggestions according to ETA’s official technical communication which was intentionally omitted in the videos to save time. Hope you'll find the walkthrough useful!
Thanks Mark. Your videos are great as always. You spent the time to ensure that the shot are clear, in frame & in focus, and not to mention the excellent sound quality. I've seen many videos that are just hard to follow because you can't see clearly what's going on, and with poor sound quality. Thank you again for posting this.
You can't even imagine how much this video helped me! thank you very much!
now imo this is an awesome footage, and i have watched it with so much concentration, surely one of my favourites on the KZread.
Thank you Mark this will give me a good inside to servicing quartz watches i have some quartz watches that i bought over the years and saved them for passing my time and saving money by repairing them myself thanks again much appreciated looking forward to seeing your other videos on repairing automatic watches.
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise. I just service an ETA 555.415 (my first deep dive into quartz) and would not have had the confidence to dive in without seeing this. Video greatly appreciated!
Excellent video. I thought there were only two kinds of quartz watches; those that work and those that don't work. While I would have replaced the movement it was fabulous watching Kevin strip this down and put it back together again. Experience (in other things) has taught me that there is always a technical reason why something doesn't work and getting into watchsmithing has been a superb diversion. Kevin is amazing. It proves that if you want something done right, give it to a professional.
Super helpful. Thank you! I'm sure I would have gotten the keyless works and the calendar back together on my own eventually, but I'm also sure there would have been a great deal of back-tracking and re-work. Following along with your assembly, I got the 955 on my bench back together efficiently and without a hitch!
Thanks so much for putting these two videos together. Just successfully managed to service my first quartz movement thanks to you! 👌🏻
Wow the engineering in these watching is amazing. I never would have thought there was that much inside just a normal quartz watch. It looks like an amazing skill to learn but so fiddly and I bet it takes many years to learn.

Excellent! Thank you so much. I’m in the process of working on this same movement & this video has been of tremendous help
I know I'm years late after this video was posted, but thanks all the same for this fascinating two part subject.

Excellent assembly dear mate.
I appreciate this a lot as I also have a lot of quartz movement watches.
At 18:00 in between the tweezers there appears to be a piece of lint on the main body. I was hoping you saw it. Awesome video a precise work. Excellent enjoy so much. Thank you
They are very durable movements in general :)
You are the Bob Ross of watch making!
Really nice videos, thanks for uploading.
20 minutes, including lubrication. My first ever practise sesh for the BHI quartz exam took me 4 hours last night for reassembly alone! I had a devil of a time getting the setting lever spring under the nib, and getting all the pivots in their jewels under the train cover plate.

I probably shouldn't say this, but if you use a ultrasonic cleaning machine; you don't need to disable everything. To all the guys who spent 20 grand going to school to become certified--I have inspected my watches under a microscope, and have proof. My point is watch services needs to come into the modern age. Keep an eye out for my watch repair school videos. It's not as complicated as some people claim. This gentleman is very talented though. I'll be at watchrepairvideos.com, and horology.biz (I'm still coding the sites, but check in. I really want to simplify, and speed up watch servicing. Rolex and The Swatch Group won't like what I revel, but the time is up. They are just watches. A watch service should not cost over the price of a watch.)
Great video as always I have one of these I’m trying to get working. I am thinking the circuit board is bad. I can’t find anything else. I found a pretty good set of plastic tweezers from Ali express. They were $2 and took a chance and they are pretty awesome. I still have several brass pairs but I have been using the plastic ones more than them ever since I got them.
Thank you. Great videos. Great help.!

Great video-
This video is a great resource! How do you keep the step rotor centered and in place? I struggled to seat it on the jewel. Being a magnet, it just kept moving to the wall of its enclosure. When I made it sit still, putting the wheel next to it made it jump out of place. Spent a good half hour on this. Hopefully, I’ve seated them in place. Will know when I install a battery. Thanks a lot Mark :)
thank for your good due.
Can you give the oiling specs please? And what types of oilers do you use? Thank you for your videos. I'm learning as I go.
Excellent video :D
exceptional
Love how you made putting rotor in look insanely easy.I think it took me 2hrs just to get the train all back together simply because the rotor kept wanting to jump out and stick to the stater.that drove me nuts considering it only took me maybe 20min total to strip down the whole movement.lol.thought doing a service on my 955.112 movement would make it work again(idk what it was but was a lot of junk stuck to the rotor somehow)but guess the coil went bad or something.dont have the tools to check the circuitry so assuming I just have to replace the whole electric module since movement still won't run after a service.

@@caseycarpenter7004 it's seriously a pain in the ass to say the least. lmfao. soon as you think you have everything in place you make the slightest wrong move and rotor just pops right out. i did eventually get it all back together but in the end I just ended up replacing the entire movement since movementonly costs like $15 more than what the electric module. well that and the fact that I could only find aftermarket Chinese modules and wasnt putting that inside my watch. Lol. now my Movado runs strong again and I have spare parts for movement if ever needed. good luck brother. it may take a bit and test your nerves and patience but you'll get it back together and have it back up and running.
Ho do you get that magenet motor in perfectly?? Every time I try it always sticks on to that metal plate next to it !
very nice
Excellent, You are a master with a pair of tweezers. Your video is very well produced. The but is, why? Why would you do it for a practical reason? Why not just buy another movement? I get it, you're showing how it can be done, but time and money would say replace it. What I really wanted to know is why they don't seem to work? I have many quartz movements that do not work. What is the main reason for their failure? Can something be done to bring them back by doing something? If not something relatively easy, I will feel better about moving on and just replacing them. (all batteries, fully charged) Thank you.
Great video! Does the movement need oiling?
Does it make sense to oil a Miyota movement like this? I have a Casio Edifice with a Miyota movement similar to this but with a day and date wheel. I needed to change the battery in the movement and while doing so I touched the movement with my finger. I whipped the finger print off with a lens cleaning cloth and noticed a little bit of black residue on the cloth afterwards. Was this lubricating oil for the gear shafts? I see that there's what appears to be three wells for holding oil on the side of the movement that faces you when the watches screw back is removed.
Hi , great video , I used to repair all mechanical watches in the 70's as a young teen , I even made one ...I lost interest , but I have just been looking at the missus's Movado 1881 , I replaced the battery a month or so ago , and it was okay but just stopped yesterday , I checked the battery its putting out 3.5 volts, but dont have a battery power tester but its a new battery and a swiss one so that should be okay, what is the most likely problem would you say for a watch like this to just stop? thx for any info
This movement is really cool! I do wonder though- what is the actual economics of rebuilding it vs. just replacing it?
Great video. But, how much do you charge for this service?
Thank you for the video. Can you advise/point me on the link of lubrication process, please.
Hello, I have the same movement on a Tissot which had a problem of date I carried out like you on this splendid video but the problem persists the watch function when I regulate the date with the stem of the winders the date scrolls but it is when I set the time with the winding stem that the date blocks between two dates. not every time but from time to time yet I do all the lubrication, but I don't understand which part is badly developed. thank you
thanks to you sir
I have a Tissot Ballade quartz with the ETA 955 112, 7 jewel, V8 movement that I received as a 25yr company service award in 2020. The watch kept great time, but the date function never worked. You could set the date, but it never would change. Several yrs ago I took it to a well established repair shop in Las Vegas and the jeweler said it needed a new movement with a total repair cost of $100.00. Repair was completed and my watch works fine.. BUT, after seeing this video I can't help but wonder if the watch required only a simple repair, possibly a set screw needed adjustment, etc. Am I being unfairly suspicious ?? I understand I'll never know for certain, but would appreciate any comments from those of you that have first hand repair experience. Thank you so much for your video. Would be great if we could all have a watchmaker as meticulous and caring about their work as you demonstrate !

I have zero repair experience, but one of my watches had a quartz. One of the little gears had broken teeth. Cheaper to replace the whole movement that repairing it. Not saying this was the issue with yours but could have been, or a jammed cog or a gear came loose potentially.

My friend has a watch with the simular movement. When he pulls the crown everything works. But the hands ownly go in one direction not the other. Could it be the pivot holes are worn causing extra clearance in the setting levers?
Hi, i bought an Invicta watch recently with a screwdown crown. When I unscrew to set the time, the crown just fell of from its place together with a tiny spring. Is this common to happen. The stem still intact though. Thank you.
Hi, what setup do you have to make this nice videos. USB microscope or other?
do you have a link to the video where you tell how to be sure that the date changes correctly with the time? I could not find it..
Thank you for your great video. I just changed the date wheel from 3 0 'clock vrsio to 6 o'clock and your video helped me perfect with my Tissot PR1500. A video on how to pick up parts with the tweezer would help me as well;).
Mark, you touched briefly on screw heads breaking off. I just created a similar situation where the stem broke right at the crown while I was removing the crown/stem from a Ronda 5040.D quartz movement on my friend's Movado. The problem is that it broke so close to the crown there's no nub for me to grip and unscrew the broken stem from the crown. Any ideas on how I can remove the broken stem? I thought I could drill a center hole, then use a small screw extractor, if such a bit exists in watchmaking sizes. Or use a reverse drill bit to make the center hole and that might get just enough purchase to unscrew the broken stem. I ordered a replacement stem, but I'm less confident that I could find a replacement crown and the watch was a gift to my friend from his dad, so I really would like to keep the original crown, if at all possible. Thanks so much for any ideas (anyone?).
I have an omega seamaster professional 300m and it is stuck at 10:43. It only moves whenever i restart the movement just by setting the time. Though whenever it reaches 10:43 it somewhat gets stuck again this time, it is 5 minuted behind whenever it starts moving again by itself. Can you tell me any diagnosis so that i can tell my local watch fixing shop.about it?

hello, one question: why don't you lubricate the jewels? should this movement be lubricated or not? thank you!
As usual, you did a great job. How many jewels does this movement have? Do quartz movements ever use end-cap jewels? I was a bit confused with the "stepping motor"? Is it really the motor that drives the wheel train? I saw no wires attached to it. There must be more to that motor than I could see in the video. Again, great video, thanks for sharing.

I didnt see him oil the train wheels. Did i miss it or is it not necessary in this quartz movement?
I wish there was a decent video on trouble shooting a quartz watch. Seems to be more electronic involvement than I previously thought.
Folks, is the date ring specific to every model that uses the movement or do the brands use the ETA date ring? In my Tag Heuer SEL on a similar .114 which had a battery leak in long term storage, the existing date ring seems to have melted to the chassis. The dial was stuck on and took a bit of effort to remove. The geartrain was gunked up with the same white plasticky gunk. I was hoping just to remove the dial and hands and just swap them over to a new movement, so will the date ring supplied with the new movement be OK for the watch?

Steve Adair that may be the case for cheap watches but Eta and Rhonda Swiss Quartz movements aren't exactly "cheap" replacement movements run anywhere from $20.00 to $200+ dollars. Why throw them away when they were designed to be serviceable.

In the large service sector, mostly every one replaces the movement unless it is a Patek quartz etc.

Cheaper at this price of movement to just replace the movement and perhaps keep the manufacturer-stamped coil cover, though kilometreage will vary with more expensive movements. It depends on the overall value of the watch, the cost of a new movement, watchmaker's time and overheads and if residuals will be lost with a new movement. The 955.114 for instance is about £25 so usually beyond economical repair. They are good to practice on, though there are cheaper ones worth buying just as practice rather than putting a watch futher out of service. It seems more financially viable to swap out superficials, eg supercaps in kinetic / solar type watches, coils in cheap etas than removing the hands and dial and swapping the movement. If it's inexperienced DIY I wouldn't go further than movement change unless you are used to working at small scales and have the right lighting, workholding, optics, tools, fluids and suitable benching. One just has to weigh up cost of parts, time, overheads, residual loss...

ETA movements are made of a higher quality than Rhonda quartz movements. ETA builds thier quartz movements almost like a mechanical one which makes them completely serviceable. Rhonda movements should just be replaced once they die

MrMoss, the arrow won't be evident until you get some magnification on the movement. Use a bit of pegwood or something non sharp as stratches will show up and, moreover, you don't want metal fragments in the electronics or movement.
