    Another great vid. Curious, which script of yours won the Nicholl? Also, how much attention did that give you from the industry?

    NUDE AND NAKED won the the Nicholl -- you will get TONS of attention from winning that - your phone will ring off the hook, but I already had an agent n manager before winning that by using a coverage service (like the ones here, but the one I used isn't in biz anymore).

    Just curious, did you enter your Nicholl script in any other contests? Have you ever had a script make the finals of one contest and not even crack the quarters of another? Sometimes the judging seems so random.

    I only entered the Nicholl-winning script in one other tiny contest Moondance and it didn't do anything. Yes, I've had scripts do very well in one competition and not do anything in another. Judging is very subjective.

    I just wanted to say a huge thankyou!! These resources are invaluable, and the fact that you've taken the time and effort to provide them for free on KZread has really given me a spark of hope as a new screenwriter ❤ this industry is very intimidating and as most creative people are sensitive (ie me lol) it helps tremendously to get this kind of practical, proactive advice to bolster our confidence. 🙏 I'm in the process of writing my screenplay, now I'm armed with a plan when it's finished, which motivates me even more, thankyou 🙏

    In a short introduction, I learned about other possibilities. I submitted my script to the Francis Ford Coppola, Zeotrope competition. I was hoping to receive some feedback of what they liked or didn't like since my script was not on the list of winners. I did receive a "thank you for submitting my script." I sent my script to Professor Richard Walter at UCLA, bad timing, he just retired! Thank you for the inside information.

    Specscout and the blacklist are paid services, they read your script, create a query letter for the script, and they also rank it through 3 readers from those websites. A "featured" script is the one that gets ranked by them with a 75+ (from 0 to 100) if they rank your script with a 75 or more, then they show it to producers and companies and anybody on "the other side" that´s looking for a good spec script. They also give you a 10 page analisys on your script, where they tell you how to make it better, or why it didn´t work, etc.

    Word Dancer - How to write a screenplay 1- What job? :) 2- But they look first a sinopsis, look a plot summary, right? Because thousands scripts sending to them. I think they should tell me "hey thats a interesting sinopsis, interesting idea, so why your script send to us??" You know? I want this process :) Because I dont write script yet. I dont want to write a big script for nothing. I have 25 story and 25 sinopsis and treatment. It would be very painful to write 25 scripts for nothing. But if the producers say, "hey we like some synopsis, you write us the script of these stories" and then it's cheerful and logical for me to write a script. :/

    You gave me a link to a job opening at Netflix. Producers, managers agents SOMETIMES (not all will take email queries) look at loglines for scripts that are ALREADY WRITTEN. If they like the logline, they will read the script. You are asking them to give you free feedback on your ideas and free market research -- they don't have time and don't offer that service. And most people talk about writing and never do it. So they are only going to deal with writers. Think of it another way - if you were starting a business, would you go to an attorney and expect him to look over your business proposal for free and tell you it's a good idea with the promise that if you get it going you will use him as your attorney? He would go out of business spending all his time looking at business proposals and MAYBE 1% will actually get off the ground and be a successful business that would hire him. You can't expect people to put more effort into your projects than you. If you don't feel you have an idea worth spending the time to write the script, they aren't going to invest the time giving you feedback. You don't need to write 25. Pick the one you are the most passionate about and write it. If you want to do market research, as friends if they like the idea. Ask strangers when you are standing in line for coffee if they like the idea. Movies are meant for a mass audience so they need to have wide appeal. Ask anyone you come in contact with what they think of your idea. People like to give their opinion - they will give it. Ask 20 people what they think of your idea and you will get great feedback. If it's positive, write that idea. I will be doing a video on this soon:)

    When might be the right time to target competitions, The Black List? After having done multi-rewrites and a read over by a non-subjective friend or family remember? Or would one hand the script over to a professional reader before doing so?

    +Heather Brown You should get much more than one read before u send it out. Mine get around 10 during various stages of rewrites. And the read should be from someone in the biz who knows what's currently out there.

    Would you put a basic draft in for a contest, or something more complex like geared towards a production draft? Like, would a production draft be judged as more creative?..

  • @worddancer-howtowriteascre9144

    @worddancer-howtowriteascre9144

    +Creepy Concept Films Production drafts (like with scene numbers, excessive camera angles, lots of “smash cut to:” etc. ) should never be entered in contests. All that extra stuff will annoy the reader and the writer will be judged as more amateurish for not knowing a production draft shouldn’t be submitted. If your screenplay is absolutely amazing it could still make it through- it won’t be turned down just because of that, but the second the reader opens it and sees scene numbers- they won’t expect great things and you will have to overcome that first impression.

    Copyright your final, polished script, if you're going to register anything. Copyright itself is established when your stuff is in a tangible medium. So that means, once your draft is completed, it's already under copyright as it's a fixed medium. It's not an idea or concept, it's a tangible work. No need to register. Registration with a copyright office merely affords you something that is irrefutable as it's a matter of public record now, so if you sued and won you'd get damages and fees paid for (generally speaking). You can still sue and win without a registered copyright BUT there are a lot of challenges to face as it now becomes a game of he said/she said more or less when proving it's actually your work. So remember, your works are already protected by copyright once completed and no registration is required. If you were ever worried about someone stealing your works, best to register it formally and have it on record (be sure you review the records for another work similar to yours before you do because your "original" idea may have already been registered by someone else previously - it happens). Your final polished draft should be the one you register formally.

    Much appreciated! Do the majority of these contests (or other services for that matter) allow only 1 script per entry or could you "double-down" by throwing in a couple of scripts at a time? Also, I'm sitting on top of 2 pilot scripts, I'm wondering if those would even be applicable for contests.

    There are plenty of pilot contests. You can enter as many scripts as you would like in contests -- you will just have to pay for each entry.

    I have a question that I can't seem to get an answer to: if my goal is to be the writer, as well as an actress in my own films, what would be the proper route for me to take - still aim to sell one of my screenplays? Basically, if someone wants to do something along the lines of what Tyler Perry does - writing, acting, directing, and producing their own films + owning their own production company, is selling a screenplay still the place to start? It's difficult to know where to start/what route to take when you want to do so many things or you simply want to do it all. Please share any insight that you can! Also, I'm so happy that I found your page! I was looking for updated information, and I came across your page through another video. It's exactly what I was looking for. I read in comments from your other videos that you feel like your views are low. I don't believe that has anything to do with you; I think it's the content, and the fact that there aren't as many people who want to be writers, you know? Sure, most of us want to be actors and a big name behind the production, but I don't think as many people actually want to write the script/tell the story. But, please don't allow that to deter you, because your information has been immensely helpful to me and everyone else who clearly likes your videos/subscribes. I can't thank you enough for all of your insight. I look forward to whats to come from your channel! Much love!

    Hey Maya-- There is no simple answer to your question. If you feel like you MUST be the one to play the role in one of your scripts, then you would attach yourself to the script. Could that hurt the changes of it being sold and made? Possibly. Could you just sell it and use that to help position yourself in the future of you think you could write other scripts that you could be in? Possibly. You would probably be wise to write very low budget scripts that could be made for little $$. Then you could partner with budding directors who want to showcase their directing talents. You might also want to make a "sizzle reel" for the project that gives people a taste of what it would be. The best situation might be -- if you can make a short film version of your script and have that go to festivals, if it performed well you could use that to leverage yourself into getting a movie made with you as the actress.

    That's the thing, the major difference between what Mr. Perry does and what I want to do. I don't want to be this significant character in a series of films or even one film. I just want to be a part of my own work, and of course, in the future, if I ever felt like my team and I couldn't find the right person for the part, I would take on the role. However, I just admire how Tyler is present in all of his films, and has played smaller roles. It just seems as though once you start out as one, its difficult to cross over as another. Meaning, if you're the writer, will people take you seriously in trying to act? If I started out as an actress, trying to book roles in other people's films, how seriously would I be taken when I finally decided to try to branch off and make my own production company. Does that make sense? That's why I'm asking which is the best route if the goal is to have your own production company? Act in other's TV shows or films first, or just focus on selling your script and working towards a production company. Please let me know what you think. Otherwise, yes, I did find all of the other info you shared helpful - especially the short film idea (which I have considered), and I will also look into what a sizzle reel is. Thank you!

    @ispysparrow

    I hate to say it, but no I do not. I have a completed play that I wrote and directed, but I never wrote it to be for film. I initially have always written books, knowing that I wanted them to be movies. Up until I found your video a few days ago, my goal was to still write and finish my books. Upon seeing your video, I said to myself, why am I wasting time writing a novel when I know I'm going to have to convert it to a screenplay in the end anyway? Plus, I assume it won't take me as long as writing a book, and will keep me from getting caught up in the intricate details. I'm sure that's not what you wanted to hear, as your videos do stress completing the screenplay. And, I have no issue doing that! I'm just researching the formatting a bit, trying to save time and do things the right way before I even start. Hence, why I'm here watching your channel. :)

    The only thing you need to worry about right now is writing a screenplay. Any thought going into hypotheticals is sucking away energy that could go into the script. Don't let these thoughts distract you and take your fire away. Start writing.
