How to Sell Travel Photos to a Magazine

I get asked how to sell travel photos all the time. One of those ways is to magazines. This is a "how to" guide to selling photos that way.
My Instagram: bit.ly/BvSInsta
My Camera Gear: bit.ly/BvSGear
In general, selling photos is hard. But, it's even harder if you want to try to sell travel photos to a magazine or newspaper. In this photography video from Taipei, Taiwan I walk you through the entire process of selling travel photos to a magazine or another publication. This guide is full of tips for selling photos, or for putting together a travel photography story in general.
I think there's lots of advice in there for new photographers or even just photographers who are looking to make some money when they're travelling.
Hopefully this helps you understand one of the many ways in which you can sell photos online and make money. Of course, this is one of the best ways to get your photography published.
Next up, a little bit of photo gear as I talk about the Canon EOS RP.

    Thank you so much for all this information and inspiration! 3 questions: 1.) If two magazines get back to you saying they want your story do you send the same one to both, choose one magazine to submit to, or write different versions for each magazine? 2.) Do you write a blurb, wait for acceptance then write the story. Or write the whole thing straight away 3.) What is a good market rate for travel stories/photos? Thanks so much and keep on doing what you do 😊👍🏼

    Well young Brendon great vlog valuable info! Ive been in and out of photography for about 40 years and now being retired Ive started doing editorial and commercial stock and now starting to make a small return each month. Jings had to be thick skinned as rejection is the norm nowadays. Haven't sent stuff into magazines as yet (I'm a coward) but will need to think about it. Strangely enough the editorial stuff is selling well but one thing to add is the editing process as well. I have to use photomechanic to cull and add meta data as doing in Lightroom for an old duffer like me is hard work on the eyes. At the end of the day its a passive income and keeps me fit.

  • @BrendanvanSon

    I used to pitch the same story to multiple places, yes. And, if 2 editors came back I'd say "sorry, that piece was taken. But, we can do something similar". Usually magazines have a "first to publish" clause. And they usually ask for exclusivity on the content for a certain period of time - usually 6 months. So, you can work around that.

    That was a very helpful video. How do you deal with multiple approvals? Can your story be published in different publications? Do you tell the publications that you submitted your story to others? thank you for any advice.

  • @BrendanvanSon

    Depends on the publication. Most will ask for "first publication rights" with a deal that you won't sell the story for 6 months after. Some don't care, some all for exclusivity.

    Do you submit the story to many magazines at the same time or only one magazine at a time and wait for the answer from that one before submitting it to a another magazine (if it got rejected by the first one)?

    I usually slowly roll out emails. I pitch 3 different stories from a destination: Day 1: Pitch stories 1 and 2 to mag 1 and 2 Day 2: Pitch stories 3 and 1 to mag 3 and 4 Day 3: Pitch stories 2 and 3 to mag 5 and 6 Day 4: Pitch stories 1 and 2 to mag 7 and 8 That way, it gives them a small amount of time to respond. But, you'll always get editors that respond a month or two later. Just use that as an opportunity to pitch something new while you have their attention.

    Wouldn't Portrait orientation only be a requirement if you are targeting selling an image for a full page or ideally the cover (nice if you can get it)? I would think that unless it is for a full page the orientation would be secondary to the impact that the image has.

  • @BrendanvanSon

    @BrendanvanSon

    I guess the point is to shoot both. And, back when I was the editor of my magazine, I found portrait orientation to be much easier to work with regardless. I'd say I used 60% portrait orientation.

    I have a question about going through customs. What do you tell Customs Officers when they ask the purpose of your visit. Some countries can be really funny about "Business" or working trips without the proper visa. But I don't want to go through the intense visa process to get a work visa and I don't want to lie to a customs officer and tell them that I'm a tourist. Customs officers will occasionally ask you what your work or job is. What do you say?

  • @BrendanvanSon

    @BrendanvanSon

    I usually just say I'm there for tourism. I'm working for my company - or someone else's - from outside the country it's fine. You could say you were there on business, but I've never had an issue. It usually goes like "what are you here for?" "travel, I'm doing a bit of a photography trip", "cool, enjoy your stay".

  • @BrendanvanSon

    My rule was that I'd pitch 1-2 magazines the same story each day. Then, if they don't get back to you for 2 weeks you can say "sorry, I didn't hear back from you so I passed it on to another magazine". BUT, that's a great time to pitch another story to them. You have their attention.
