How To Sell Pokemon Cards in 2023 *Beginner's Guide*
This is the ultimate beginner guide to running a Pokemon Business in 2023! This video outlines the business model that I use to sell pokemon cards on, eBay, TCGPlayer, and Shopify!
I've been selling Pokémon for six years on and off with the current business venture being 3 years old. I've sold on TCGPlayer, eBay, Amazon, and Shopify. Originally I only sold Pokemon Bulk on TCGPlayer then I branched into eBay for higher-end pokemon TCG singles
Platform Specifics
Ebay
I found that ebay singles sell for more than TCGPlayer and the eBay standard envelope is awesome
TCGPlayer
TCGPlayer is better for bulk cards worth anywhere from $0.50 - $5.00
TCGPlayer Direct
TCGPlayer Direct is going to be my platform of choice for 2023. It gives better margins, creates less effort, and you don't have to deal with a lot of the hassles of normally selling on TCGPlayer!
Shopify
Build a brand and sell on Shopify with a pokemon distributor
Shopify is your anchor and can be a great way to provide information to prospects
Utilize KZread, Instagram, FB, etc to drive traffic to Shopify.
KZread
Utilize KZread to document the process and teach others about how you run your business.
As you build a following, you are building customers.
Ad revenue can help offset costs that you encounter while building a brand
Create value for your customers by overpacking shipments, giving discounts, and being a cash fund for people looking to liquidate collections.

Awesome vid! Looking forward to level 4 with tcgplayer. Didn’t realize there was a 100 card cap for level 1. So far I’ve only sold a single raikou… trying to figure which cards sell fast. I could go the cheap route…

Hey so I’ve been starting to sell a bit more heavy on tcg this month. Quick question on storing cards, I was thinking of separating by condition, then set, then A-Z order within the set. How do you do you recommend we organize the monster boxes? I’ve bought the sorting trays you recommended and the tall cards to go A-Z for the monster boxes.
Crazy how quickly this business is changing. Being able to adapt so important.

Love the content and you're smart as a whip for your age. On your own Shopify store You obviously are dealing with returns on your own? I'd imagine the hardest part of running your own shop is there's no third party to help you with scammers?
@TheLabTCG
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! Yes, I have dealt with returns and scams. There is now a little bit of protection, but it is contingent on a couple things and won't fit every scenario. So there is still risk on shopify.
Hey Will! I have a question. When do you sell a high value card vs. getting it graded and selling later? For example let's say for Obsidian, since it just came out, would it be more profitable to sell the Charizard EX 223 immediately or hold onto it, professionally grade and sell later? I would love your feedback. Thank you
how do i know whats a low end/high end card?
Just stumbled across your video, awesome work! One question, as far as taxes go, I am not a business, just a collector looking to offload some duplicates. If I am not selling a lot, how does that work? Does TCG Player take your taxes out?

Hi Will, I recognize you from your playing days! Nice to hear how well this side of Pokemon is working out for you! I've sold around 100 cards on ebay over the years, but those were always mid-to-high price singles. I'm now sitting on around 20k bulk cards. Am I correct to assume that you'd recommend that I go TCG Direct with the bulk? I don't even have a seller account with them (though I've made hundreds of purchases over the years). Do I need to do some sales before trying to get to Direct, or do you think it's worth it for me to email them asking to sign up?
@TheLabTCG
Жыл бұрын
Hey that is awesome! Thanks for the comment. If you are looking to just move it asap, I would sell to another store at bulk rates. If you do want to sell them as singles, I think direct is the best. That being said, yes, you should start a regular tcgplayer account and start getting the ball rolling.

@TheLabTCG

Locally and Facebook are great options! Making relationships with customers is also a great way to source unwanted cards.
Any tips for starting outside the US? As an American in South Africa, I've noticed there's a market where I live in Johannesburg, but nobody is really offering singles, so everyone is buying sealed product. Not sure if it's a viable endeavor, but I'd like to do the market research and try if it makes sense.

I think the same concepts can apply internationally. Start to post in local groups offering to buy pokemon cards and resell them for higher.
Would be great if you can make a video explaining how it works during tax season. I made about 25-30 grand last year with pokemon which is not much but decent. Like what do we need to have ready, what can I use as tax write offs.

I really appreciate this video. Im new to ebay and selling online in general. It appears ebay gets to charge 13% commision of every pokemon card sale. Thats insanely high in my opinion. I just reached the $600 mark in sales in which I finally found out that my payout is only $413 after "fees". Its wild because that means Ill be paying taxes for $600+ when ive only received $423 so far. I have to be wrong. Please tell me im wrong! Are there other listing sites that dont charge this much commission?

Hi Ryan, thank you for the question. At the moment there is no work around. My advice is to try and differentiate your business from others and show sales history. When you talk to distributors try and show that you are currently doing business and are looking to purchase x amount per month / year. I hope this helps.

@ryant9549 I had a distributor reach out to me , they had a $5000 order minimum, and the booster boxes were $98 , I could buy the booster boxes cheaper on tcgplayer and wouldn't have an order minimum...just a heads up , shopping with a distributor isn't all that amazing
