Let me give u a piece of advice. I have Prostaff 3s , 7s and monarch 5 , all in 10x42 configuration. All are superb . If u want to waste money go for Monarch 5 . If u want 99% of monarch 5 performance at less than half the cost , go for Nikon prostaff 3s 10x42 or 8x42 . They are nearly 100 gms lighter than Monarch 5 and much wider field of view. ED glass tag makes imperceptible difference in performance. But in day to day use weight matters. Prostaff 3s series gives u the bang for the buck and ease of use , besides having a wider field of view and being enormously lighter at 550-560 gms.

The 3 series on sale now are supposed to be the newer improved version. Those are very good for the price. They are on sale now even on Nikon website

8x to 64 x magnification and 180 angle of view

My wife and I will be traveling to Alaska. I initially wanted 16 power binoculars for seeing distant glaciers and mountains, but I’m worried about shake, field of view, and the ability to see things close up. But seeing distant glaciers, etc. is important also. And when were in the whale boat if she misses seeing them due to crappy or ill-suited equipment I’m going to be in trouble! Is there a good quality zoom model or which ones would you suggest? Thank you. Oh, and I don’t want a huge pair. Something travel size would be good.

Don't buy zoom-binoculars. You'd be much better off buying two pairs with different magnification.

Get no more than 10 magnification. Get 30 or 32 objective lens for compact size, or go to 42 max. Make sure they are fog and waterproof. You can get a good serviceable pair for less that $250.00

I closed my eyes, "spun the globe" (sorta speak) and asked Santa Claus for a pair of the "Prostaff 3s 8x42" optics that I blindly chose.... Are these the same as the series 3?

10 x closer does not mean 10x bigger

Magnification means how much bigger image scale is compared to naked eye. Which is the same as how much closer you visually comes to the object. Watching an object at 100m with 10x the image is the same size as watching at 10m naked eye. So 10x closer means 10x bigger on the side, not surface area.
