Well, every day's a school day, as they say! I've been knitting for 51 years and i've never seen these types of seaming techniques but i will most certainly be practicing them for sure! Thanks for the tips, I'll be back to learn more 😊

Dear Ellen, I have just made my first raglan sleeve cardigan for my great-grandaughter. It was a pattern by Patons, very easy to follow until it came to sewing on the button band and the buttonhole band. They are made separately and then sewn on the fronts of the sweater. Every time I queried how to sew them on, it gave me the picking up of stitches and then ribbing the band. I cannot find anywhere, how to sew on premade bands. Could you possibly show me how to do this, I am frustrated and lost. I think it should be done with a mattress stitch, but I am not sure how to line it up. It is a crew neck cardigan and lovely in dusty rose, I would hate to tear it apart, but I cannot find any video where this is done. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Lori.

Hi there! Button bands are worked separately from the garment because they are typically worked in rib and ribbing has a different row gauge than stockinette. If you were to work them alongside the garment, you would get a droopy button band.😀 you are correct that they should be sewn on with the mattress stitch. I believe I have a video for the mattress stitch, but if I don’t, I’ll make one quick quick. Please do not rip this out.❤️

Did the pattern have you do the button band and button hole bands shorter than the length of the cardigan? Typically they do. Either way, you will want to stretch the button band until it is the same length as the front edge of the cardigan and clip it in place at the top and the bottom, then in the middle, then again, between the top, and the middle, and the bottom in the middle. Do the same for the buttonhole band. Make sure they’re in the right place and in the right orientation according to the pattern. I mean, hold it up and look at it and make sure that it makes sense and that the buttonhole band and the button band are on the correct side for the gender of the baby. in your case, the buttonhole band will be on the right front (as worn), and the button band will be on the left. You will seam from the right side using mattress stitch.

You are always going to be doing your seaming from the right side.

Do you always knit the first and last stich to help with stiching

You can, but I find a sticjinette selvedge is best for stockinette fabric-i always work the first and last stitch in pattern. The key is to place shaping at least one stitch away from the edge.

Elin, I couldn't clearly see how you stitched at the center of the top of the sleeve. Also, do you continue from there down one side and then to the other side?

Hey Rona, you’re going to go down through the center or the center stitch and up through the center of the next stitch on the sleeve cap and then down through the first row of the body, up under the bar. Does that make sense? I was running out of time to show the whole thing. It will be on the site tomorrow, and I’ll send you a link. 😀
