How to Seal a Pond with Bentonite - Sprinkle Method

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Sometimes when you clean out an old pond it can start leaking. Bentonite is the most effective way to stop a pond from leaking. Let me show you how to use Bentonite gel granules that you can buy at your local Co-op to help your pond retain water. The sprinkle method is fast and best to use when you can’t drain all of the water out of a pond.

I'm sold on the idea. I have a natural pond about 50ft x 50ft. It fills up in rainy season then the water slowly goes way down to about 15ft wide by July or August, but stays there till next season. I'll wait to the lowest point, pump it all out and seal the entire thing with bentonite. I think Ill rototill it in,then compact it. I'm going to add an oxygenation and pump in the bottom and filter. If it holds I'll add plants, rocks and eventually fish. I want to try and make it full of life with plants, fish, turtles and frogs etc.

If you get on a tiny raft and get in the pond on it you can empty the bentonite right on top of the water and it will disperse itself and drop down and seal. By the sounds of it it seems you may want a tighter seal then you can do all the extra work but if your pond is full now, you could just try this method for a pretty darn good seal.

This is great info, I especially needed to know how much to use and what kind was helpful too. You can get on a very small raft and float on top of the pond water and sprinkle the bentonite on top of the water itself, the clay will disperse and sink down. I will now know to line the sides of the pond at the top rim, thank you. Iv been told how to do this and never did it cause I wasn’t give a few specifics. This is great info

Grandpa said pigs will seal a pond. The most common causes of leaks are roots, snake , frog, crawdad tunnels. Pigs will eat em all and their feet will pack the holes tight. I'd suppose you could pour a bag or two in their waller and they'd be more than happy to help. Just imagine how soft it'd get their hide.
