How to Say YOU LOOK GREAT in Spanish (Mirar vs Ver vs Parecer)
If you want to tell someone "You look great" or "You look beautiful" in Spanish, there are a few different ways we can do this.
In this video, I will talk about a few of the most common ways to talk about how something looks in Spanish. In addition, I'm going to use Netflix subtitles as a guide for how we can think about this situation.
Specifically, you'll learn:
- How to talk about how food looks
- How to tell someone they look great
- The difference between ver vs parecer vs mirar
- How to notice and think about colloquial phrases

How else can we say that something "looks good" in Spanish? (There are more options than what I found on Netflix)

The problems with translation... English: You look great! Español: ¡Luces genial! That's the correct translation... So if you want translate: "You look good", like: "Te ves bien", I think it's ok too, but "estás bien", it's incorrect, because "estás" mean "To be", in Spanish "Ser/Estar". Other: "You look beatiful". "Luces hermosa/o". (Spanish). "Look at you!". In Spanish: "¡Mírate!". The problem with this sentece it's not really used in spanish world. (Or well not like in english).

And when she say: "So... Good" that mean: "Muy bueno/a"; or "Demasiado bueno/a". (I dont remember what she say before of that).

😂😂😂😂 The correct way to say what you wrote is. Hola, estoy aprendiendo español ahora mismo y duolingo me ha estado ayudando mucho, soy de Estados Unidos y hablo inglés como primera lengua. Yo solo se un poco de español y estoy usando mucho google translate ahora mismo. Jajajajaa. We refer to you as estadounidenses because we are all Americans.
Fascinating topic and a great reminder to think about your English phrase before attempting to translate it directly into Spanish.
Good jokes. When learning Spanish, I learned this one... "Si no rio en baño, yo baño en el río." Thank you so much for your channel!

Great video-I have often found some phrases need a lot of thought and research to convey their tru meaning!!! gracias
We know you are versatile in several languages but some of us are still in the mechanical (methods) way of learning SP. Most of us are still on the tarmac still "taxing" and eager to fly without the distraction of other languages. From my perspective, your BEST VIDEO was about "FILLER WORDS" 15 words in 15 minutes. Vaya con dios!
I enjoyed listening to your explanation and I am looking forward to more of the same. I want to learn the intricacies of spanish and you are providing them - Thank you very much.

Great video! I love it! To tell someone that another person looks good, can you say, "se ve bien". I know that "te ves guapo" means "you look good" but can you say "se ve bien" when talking to someone about someone else? Can you also say "la veo genial" (She looks great)? Gracias por los consejos.
Ideas: Bajar versus Rebajar. (And other similar words using a minor prefix, such as fuera, afuera etc)
It would be good to do a session or lesson on some common expressions just as in pulling your leg in English which Spanish equivalent seems to be taking your hair

It means look like, Yo parezco indigente = I look homeless. Tú pareces de confianza = You look trustworthy. Él parece un ladrón = He looks like a thief. Ellos parecen futbolistas = They look like soccer players. Vosotros parecéis españoles = You look Spanish. Nosotros parecemos familia = We look like family.

Hi Andrew, actually you could translate saying almost the same. This looks so good = Esto se ve muy bien. You look very manly = Te ves muy masculino, which means the same. You look great = Te ves bien (estupendo). You look homeless = Te ves indigente. You look beautiful = Te ves hermosa (preciosa). All of them could be translated meaning the very same. I don’t know why the translators tweak them.

This was a really good video, but there was a related question that I'm not sure you answered. In English, we use a lot of sensory equivalents to "looks good," such as "sounds good," "smells good," and "feels good." Are all of these idiomatic, or is everything but "looks good" directly translatable? If they are idiomatic, how do you say "sounds good" in Spanish?
"You look beautiful" can also be translated as "Te ves hermosa".

why te ves instead of te veo?
Is it ok to use the “Te veo muy guapa” construction in the third person. e.g. Veo bien el restaurante, or lo veo muy bien?
@telekinetika
2 жыл бұрын
Correcto, LO replaces El restaurante
You look great
You can also use the verb "lucir". This looks so good = Esto luce muy bien. You look great today = luces bien hoy. Saludos.
Excelente guapo hombre! 😂
A similar topic to consider covering is saying something smells versus someone smelling something.
I am in no way an expert, but Reversocontexto (which is almost all from subtitles) gives about 40 translations of "te veo bien" as "you look good", or something close to it. On the other hand, when translating "te ves bien" it gives over 700 translations of the same. Enter "to look good" in SpanishDict and you get "verse bien". Can you clarify Andrew?
@realfastspanish
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, as I mentioned in the video, there are lots of ways to translate this into Spanish and your examples are more options as well. The key point is that we don't use "mirar" (to look) and instead we need different verbs like "ver", "verse", "parecer" and "estar". You can also try putting "estás preciosa" into SpanishDict and Reverso to see the variety.
@utubeneer
2 жыл бұрын
@@realfastspanish OK, thanks Andrew! like that "estás preciosa" too . . .
In English the word "precious" is most likely applied to a child, or maybe a girl/woman, but not usually to a man. Does the word "preciosa" (precioso?) have any of those connotations or can it be used regardless of age or gender?

MODISMOS Right? Idioms in English?
Me parece que en vez de decir “te veo bien” es posible decir “se ve muy bien”. Naturalmente, el sentido de la segunda expresión es un poco distinto, pero igual aceptable.
The jokes were adorable.

Hi, just joined, but, I’m already finding that the back ground music is distracting, sorry.
Q:"Three meals walk into a bar. One looks left and right. One looks up and down. How does the third meal look?" A: "It looks great." How would you translate "It looks great" into Spanish to make it humorous? Somehow "Tiene muy buena pinta" doesn't seem to capture the play on double entendre.

You can’t because in English you are saying it in double meaning. In this example you can’t do it in Spanish. It wouldn’t have sense.
Qué tal si digo a mi amiga,por ejemplo - te ves hermosa?

We use dulce as an adjective but we say it like this. Sos un dulce, Eres dulce.

Tiene buena pinta(thing) Estás muy bien Estás muy guapa
