    Awesome video! Duolingo doesn’t explain any of these rules so it’s pretty much a guessing game when learning possessives on there! This was helpful :) I have a random question, on duolingo the word “De” is pronounced “don”, eg “de dricker vatten” sounds like “don dricker vatten” - I’m confused about the pronunciation, is it pronounced DON & is there any rule or reason behind it? :) thanks!

    I'm sure you're aware of de/dem (they, them) and that many Swedes struggle with which is supposed to be in what situation. A solution to this was "dom", which is supposed to be a form of multitool that would work in either scenario (it is debated if dom is even correct grammarwise). Anyhow, some people say "dom" while speaking (for both de and dem), while others don't. (I personally don't use dom at all).

  • @wokebear7797

    @wokebear7797

    @@lillkrull1161 thanks that was super helpful! So does that mean Duolingo is pronouncing “De” incorrectly? Because when it reads “De” aloud it says “Dom” which is confusing because the spelling reads “de” 🤔

  • @lillkrull1161

    @lillkrull1161

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@wokebear7797 No, I wouldn't say that duolingo necesarily is pronouncing it incorrectly. There are a lot of people pronouncing it that way. People will understand you no matter if you pronounce it as "de" or "dom". View it as varying by dialect instead. :) I just prefer to distinguish de or dem even when I talk.

    I know this was from 4 months ago so you may have already figured it out or moved on, but her previous video that went over personal pronouns explained the pronunciation. How do you say "before" in Swedish? Innan, före, förut, förrän?

  • @narianthebear8854

    @narianthebear8854

    3 жыл бұрын

    I’m a swedish native speaker, but genuinely dont know how to explain hahahahah. It can pretty much be all of those words tho, innan and före translate to ”before” I think, but förut is more like ”in the past” I guess. Föränn is like ”until”. Dont listen too much to this tho, I really dont know lol

    4:57 Great video. But fyi: You have a grammatical mistake with the translation on “its.” “Its” is the possessive form for “it,” not “it’s.”

    So how can I know if the word is ett or en

  • @FunSwedish

    @FunSwedish

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's a good question. We will someday make a video about it but you basically need to know it by heart. Most words are en (like more than 70 %) so what most people do is to learn the ett-words by heart.

    Random question : why min and mitt are pronounced normally but mina is nasal?

  • @FunSwedish

    @FunSwedish

    2 ай бұрын

    That is a great question. "Mina" has a long I (I guess for you it sounds a bit nasal) because it is followed by just 1 cononsant. When this happens the vowel (in general) becomes extra long. While both "mitt" and "min" have a short "i". Mitt because it is followed by 2 consonants and "min" because it is an exception to the rule (it should also be long because it is followed by just 1 consonant but this is an exception and its pronunced as same as in "mitt) Hope that made some kind of sense. Otherwise let me know and I will ry to explain more. If you want to learn more about Swedish pronounciation then we can really recommend you to take this online course. funswedish.teachable.com/p/pronunciation

    Good question 🤔. I would say it is because Swedes like to keep sentences short and simple (compared to other languages). So the need that kind of refence happens less often. But it is just a wild guess 😁
