How to Save Your Propagations from Root Rot & Stem Rot | Monstera Deliciosa Albo Rot
G'day, guys! In today's video, I show you one of my Monstera deliciosa 'borsigiana' albo variegata propagations and why it's going in the bin... :( it's got both root rot and stem rot because of some mistakes that I've made. I'd like to share these mistakes with you so you can know what to do if your cuttings get stem or root rot in the future and how to save them!

Hey Pete, I feel like the moss on top didn’t help it either. The best thing for any plant rotting is air, remove as much rot as you can an let it lay out an dry out. I learned this with a Thai that kept rotting on an tried everything. Actually learned this from Jimmy, Legend of Monstera.

Yeah, I think you're right, mate. I think I added it as some of the roots were exposed on the surface, but next time I think I'll err more on the side of caution and using less.

@@petevsplants7516 Sorry you lost it. 💚
I love that you show this stuff. I have had some stuff rot just today and its really discouraging. I had a syngonium erythrophyllum rot last year and tried to save it by rooting some cuttings in water but they never took root so I moved to sphagnum moss and made them into wet sticks. About half of them recovered and grew new roots so I potted them up but maybe too early, its been about 3 months of looking ok but now they look sickly again UGH.

Yeah, the never-ending cycle of health and sickness in your plants lol good fun
I recycle my soil substrate ,put it not in the trash..,please save the earth, and also your plants.. I use the microwave highest watt 10 minutes and all the fungus ,bacteria ,etc steam to death..this tip I got from a Profesional farmer of greens.. it's take some electricity but I do it every time I use some substrate ..use a big bowl or zip of bag ,don't close the bag.. and steam.. 😊
Thank you for sharing your propagation from root rot have a blessed

Really needed this. I got two thais for my birthday just after Christmas and the heat had dried them out so even a little water gave them root rot. Now I've been able to save the nodes but I'm worried trying to rewater propergate new root growth might toast em as they're looking like they have affected stems, but they're not much so...😅 fingers crossed as I only got these as my mum paid for them for me 😅

Yeah, these mistakes happen. Just have to learn from them.
Thank you for this video, it saved my precious "Jessica Albo"! ☺There was some rot on the very tips of a few roots, but otherwise "she" was fine. ( I had the stem thouroughly dipped in ceylon cinnamon, guessing that might be what saved the stem from rotting like the root tips? 🤔)
I've heard of this happening often with starting albos. Maybe they are more sensitive to rot? Good on you for being successful with the others!

Yeah, not sure. Think it was more me being too confident and burying it too deep under moss and soil :(
Thanks Pete - I just acquired an Albo cutting that the previous owner was propagating in perlite and I am fearing daily I will murder it before I get it to soil or the second it goes in to soil so this couldn’t have come at a better time 😂

Lol I think if you just have one and are giving it daily attention, you'll be on top of any issues that crop up :D

@@petevsplants7516 I’m checking daily so 🤞🤞
Have you tried cutting a bamboo shoot so it's open like a straw? and run a few down into the soil. Helps the bottom of the pot to get oxygen. It's working on my XXL thai con that made the mistake of putting in an oversized pot.
EIWWWWWW HAHAHAAH ROOT ROT IS THE MIST UNCOMFORTABLE THING TO TOUCH! it’s just like feeling food pieces in the sink.😂😂😂 But to be honest, so far, I have managed to save a Thai cons from its root rot cycle.

Bahaha that's so true... The worst is when you're cleaning up plants and removing any rotting roots or sheaths, etc. and then have to fish them out of the sink...
Ohhhh damn 🥺 it's always a heartbreak when you loose one isn't it?

Haha yeah, but what can you do... :(
Maybe you can do an experiment with using cinnamon on the ends and I’ve seen people use candle wax on the ends I didn’t know that my 1st Thai con roots grew out the drainage hole and it drowned and now my albo just lost its leaf but it’s under watering. Or maybe I should go double check 😅

Lol yeah, it's a fun game of balance :D Will try that comparison in the future if I can :D
I just got today two baby Alocasia Flying Squid and one of them had only two half rotted tiny roots. I guess it's a perfect time to try and reroot a plant in Fluval Stratum , i was planning on trying it out😅

Yeah, definitely lol good luck! Still dying for those to hit Aus
Aww. Hope it will be better. My melo alocasia getting root rot - my fault I guess since I decided to change the soil that it came with from store... I think I watered it too soon after - and now , only week after - it's leaves got droopy and one of the old leaves yellowing. Now I do not have leca - I will try to put it in perlite. At least I did got some corms as well.

From what im hearing as long as the stem doesnt rot the cutting can be saved? I just got one for valentines day through the mail and put it in sphagnum moss. Leaves are turning a bit brown and roots are turning brown as well. What should i do to save it?
Really informative video but losing an Albo, damn that hurts.

Cheers, Gary. Yeah, not your first choice of a good day.
How long would you leave it out to dry?
I seen someone spraying the stem of their Alocasia with copper fungicide to prevent rot before putting it in stratum.
damn damn damn !

Well hell, that sucks, 😞 I lost my Albo chonk I had a few months back. Leaf popped and was looking. Never produced roots and rotted. I was sick so I can empathize. Haven’t tried an Albo since lol.

Yeah, some are weird. I've got an aurea cutting that's rooted so well, but the node only activated then just stopped and hasn't done anything in over 8 months.
I’m tired of monstera and their rot! I just don’t know what to do with mine. They rot in peroxide and water too.

I lost two Albos to rot. These guys are hard to root for me. I have tried wax, cinnamon and different growth mediums
Have you ever tried the candle wax on ends ? I have saw a ton of people doing it but never tried it myself. Just wanting anyone's Opinion on if it works?

Hehe good luck, mate. I'm sure it'll be fine.
I can root anything but this albo... Good god... It's a freaking nightmare! After root development in water, I've potted her, 3 days in and a rot... Back un water she is.... 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
If you happen to go to a hydroponic shop, get 50% hydrogen peroxide. 2ml in a litre will get you 3% and I have been using it a lot for rot treatment, sanitizing media or tools, killing pests, and water propagation. Totally worth it.

Good suggestion. I've got 6% I think somewhere and have used it a few times.
