How to Save Pepper Seeds (that are true to type!)

Saving pepper seeds that are true to type requires a few extra steps, but it's not difficult at all!
----
Welcome to Auxhart Gardening! I’m Rachel, a small-scale southern gardener growing near Clemson, SC, zone 7b. I mainly garden in-ground, with containers as secondary production spaces.
Knowing where your food comes from is powerful, and empowering, and I believe we can change the world through gardening education.
The agricultural system is broken; we’ve monocultured nearly every major crop, forcing the use of chemical pesticides and inorganic fertilizers to maintain large-scale food production. I believe there’s a better way.
By teaching people to rely on themselves, even just a little, for their food supply, we might be able to create some breathing room for our strained food system, allowing for change to start happening.
By educating people about where food comes from and how to grow it, we can raise awareness about our broken agricultural system and form a community that understands how to fix it.
By forming a community, we can move toward creating real change in the world.
My goal is to educate; yes you can grow food, yes you can do it without chemicals, yes you can do it in your backyard or on your windowsill. And yes, that can make a difference in the world.

I have got some pepper seeds germinating for this year. I have my latest yt video showing all my pepper seeds which are crosses of Bell, Ramiro and Jalapeno. It's great saving your own seeds especially if you crossed them because you can enjoy the fruits again and the seeds have some history.

You made this really simple and easy to follow. I was worried about planting different varieties concerned about cross pollination since our garden is so small but this trick makes me much more comfortable.

Some good info. We know someone that uses big net gift bags from the dollar store to cover an entire plant individually. We have thought of trying it that way as well but are always so crazy chaotic. Got to keep those seeds as true as possible. Was that pepper a Lesya? Great stuff. Thanks for the share

Yep, a Leysa! I never thought about covering the whole plant, but they grow so fast, idk how feasible that is.

Well done! I removed the seeds and placed them in a paper towel covered up and sealed with scotch tape. Would it be better wrapped in sealed bags like you have shown us? Thanks for sharing! Be well …

For long term storage, sealing them up is the most ideal, to protect them from moisture.

I have some relatively small green pepper plants (1 ft tall) starting to fruit....should I remove most of the other peppers off of the plant, concentrating on just a couple, or just let the plant do it's own thing? Thanks.

It's hard to say. If they're larger peppers, it might benefit from making fewer of them, but also if it's got enough nutrition to support its growth it might be fine to make all of them.

Hi, I collected pepper seeds from 2 store bought. I let them dry and tried to get them to germinate like you have. Is it possible the seeds are sterile? Is that even possible with a store bought pepper. Tried a lot of seeds with not even 1 geminating.thank you!

Sure! We came up with it for my Animal Crossing town originally, as an intentional mis-spelling of Oxheart carrots. Now to me it means more, like 'aux' short for 'auxillary' can mean helpful, so its helpful heart, which I like a lot.
