How to Save for a Home Renovation

We all use YNAB for our day-to-day lives, but what does it look like to organize and save for a big, long-term project with YNAB? Kyle and Lauren Mochizuki walk us through how they used YNAB to plan, organize, and save for their whole-home renovation!
This is the second episode of a two-part series. If you missed last week, hop back a video to see how Hannah outlines and breaks down a saving plan for a multi-layered music project in YNAB!

    Could you all work on a video featuring someone from a working-class/lower-income background? I understand the principles will likely remain the same regardless of income, but timelines and strategies might differ. Firefighters and RNs are well-paid in California (as they should be!), but many people who struggle with budgeting work as servers, store clerks, college students, etc. Thanks for the great videos!

    Shawn-love this! Absolutely! I'll add it to my list! In a few weeks, I will have a video coming out on budgeting with any income, where I'll explore what it looks like to get paid every two weeks, every month, and variable income (like a realtor who has to make one paycheck last three months). Hopefully that can give some helpful insight in the meantime! Might be some handy nuggets in there. -Hannah :)

    I literally just learned about YNAB a few days ago, and the changes in thinking about my budget it's making me do are amazing! I love that all my money has a job, and it's not like I can just look at my bank account and think "oh I have so much extra I can spend" because I can't because every dollar has a job in my YNAB budget. The first rule alone is making a huge difference to me!

    Kat-YES! So glad to hear this!! YNAB's rules were a major game changer for me too. Getting to see all my dollars and their jobs all spread out in the app made a huge difference too. So glad you're enjoying it!! Keep it up! -Hannah :)

    Great story -- my husband and I are doing the same thing! We found an awesome home in our dream neighborhood -- the house hasn't been updated since the 70s and renters lived in it for 20 years. We have to update all the major systems before we can even renovate the interior as well. I'm literally starting the second budget today to help allocate all our savings -- I've been a YNABer for almost a year now and I'm excited about this and feel like we can totally do it! this tool has given me the confidence to -- also great time about the Unexpected Costs line item...it will definitely come up. I think we'll have to work through labor + materials on this as well, so we're shopping around bids for contractors as part of our budgeting!

    Thanks for the tips on using more than one Budget! I knew that you could, but didn't know what to use it for but I have some renovation projects of my own and was struggling with how to put them into my budget, etc. Now I have those renovation projects in a separate budget, named? You guessed it, Renovations!

    We haven't used YNAB to plan out renovations to this level of detail, but we do have goals set up for specific projects. We had "new roof" and "kitchen reno", oh, and "deck", so now we have "new AC" and I should start "landscaping" and "flood remediation" goals. I have also been socking away extra cash into our "iceland trip" fund so that when travel restrictions are loosened , we can finally take that dream trip.

    We use the multiple budgets for our kids allowance. In the family budget their “money” is in “tracking” accounts as a liability for us. They are saving for an “IPad” and “Shopping trip with mom” thanks for the fun videos Hannah. You always make me laugh even in these hard times.

    Oh my gosh, I love that! One of our customer service rockstars Shannon just shared a story of how her 13-year-old budgeted her way toward some AirPods, and it was so fun to hear her strategy and how she got those AirPods a lot sooner than she had originally expected! Hope they reach their iPad and Shopping Spree goals real soon :) -Hannah :)

    The multiple budgets was one of the reasons I started YNAB in the first place! This was primarily because I work in two different currencies and so I have a different budget for obligations/investments in different countries.

    I'm currently using YNAB to turn my garage into a woodworking shop. I didn't do it on a separate budget though. I can share screenshots but I've got a category for each project with what I need to buy to complete that project. I use Evernote to keep up with each project and the product numbers/links for everything I need. Here's an example of my YNAB setup: Fixed Expenses - ... Long Term Expenses - ... Workbench Project - Finishing nails - $5.00 - Finishing wax - $10.00 - 3" casters - $27.77 - Dado blades - $52.00 - Table saw - $749.00 - Lumber - $200.00 - Overlay hinges - $60.00 Multi-Purpose Storage rack project - Lumber - $50.00 - ...

    I would love more info on how to get money from your main budget into your second large project budget. Two budgets would be great for a home reno! Thanks for your videos, Hannah. I always learn something and you always make me laugh!!!😊

  • @matthewheadland7307

    sherielf situation: you want to move money from your main budget to the project budget: In your main budget record a transaction (outflow) of the amount with the payee being “large project”. Then go into your project budget and record a transaction (inflow) for the amount you’re moving. This is probably the most elegant solution with two budgets though would only really work with two accounts if you’re doing it all from a chequing account registered in both budgets it’ll get confusing really fast. If you find a better way please do let me know!!

    This is *exactly* my dilemma right now!! I am strongly considering having bank account(s) and credit card associated to each budget. I've got my 'big ticket' / reno "budget" made.. but now that I want to spend from it I keep having to go to my day-to-day budget where the debit & credit cards are. So I've got a category "house" which actually has itemized things in the *other* budget. And just lots of back & forth double entry and error prone things in it. Also, I've actually built up enough money in my day-to-day accounts that I want to transfer it to my "big savings account" .. but that'll mess up both budgets too!! Maybe I need to have a single budget idk idk.. but I don't really want to have my day-to-day budget having all the itemized reno things in it either. *sigh*

    Could you do a video about how to run two separate budgets in tangent (like a budget-cycle built for two! eh? eh?) without accidentally assigning each dollar two jobs?

  • @matthewheadland7307

    @matthewheadland7307

    4 жыл бұрын

    Crystal Dirkson This is probably best done by making two accounts and assigning one to each budget. Ie chequing for BUDGET A and a savings for BUDGET B. You’d only be in danger of assigning each dollar two jobs if you record that dollar in your accounts twice. If you’re wanting to have “his” and “hers” money, then you can even do that in the same budget, just create a category “his” with subcategories of all the things “he” wants to spend money on. That would definitely avoid the “two job” problem and not make the person doing the books look back and forth between two budgets.

    Rebekah-these are the questions I LIVE for. I'm a big fan of the Knox Rose line at Target (though half is kind odd and quirky, the other half is cutie patootie and right up my alley). This came from there! I just checked and they don't carry it anymore, but they have very similar pieces to it all the time! Definitely worth a check. - Hannah :)

    Cool, and congratulations to the Mochizukis for their victory!! That has to be an amazing feeling, not only to work for want you want but just to know that you can do it. The next time life throws a curveball, they'll probably be better emotionally and mentally prepared to take the necessary steps to see their way through it. :) As far as Banksy, I think it's time to deploy the crazyglue. I mean, he's part of the team and ready to contribute 100% isn't he? Right?!

    @@YNABofficial I'd love to have the opportunity to be able to create a transaction where money from one budget flows into the other. Let's say, we reserve 1000 euros for the house this month. We then put it on a separate bank account (more for practicality than anything else) as well as into the other (house) budget. It means I have to create multiple transactions. One for removing money from one budget, another for adding the money to the house budget, and then a third in my actual bank account. And if we happen to have 200 euros more available, we need to change all 3 transactions from 1000 to 1200 in order to make all budgets add up. That could be a lot simpler in my opinion. I'd love transactions from one budget to another. I guess also small business owners could benefit from easily moving money between private and business budgets when needed

    So what do you do with the categories after you complete the renovation? If you create a main category called "Home Renovation" and have 25 sub-categories, like "architect fee", how do you delete the category the following month? It asks where do you want to move the previous activity?

  • @YNABofficial

    @YNABofficial

    Жыл бұрын

    You can totally take it easy like I do and just "hide" the category. On the web app, you can do this by right clicking the category and clicking "hide", and on the mobile app go into "edit" mode, scroll down the category you want to hide, tap the "-" symbol, and select "Hide Category." If you don't want to have 25 hidden categories, you could also make a new category, titled something like "Home Renovation Expenses (2022)" or something along those lines. When you delete each of the 25 categories and it asks you where you want to relocate the transactions within those categories, just move them to your "Home Renovation Expenses 2022" category. Now you can still bring them back to life whenever you need by clicking "unhide" and search up whatever old transaction you want to reference! Hope this helps! That's what I would do! 🌻 Hannah
