How to save an Oncidium orchid without (or with very few) roots

We all face sick orchids and the most common illness is the loss of roots. Weather you have an orchid with no roots or with very few roots, this method has been tried tens of times by me and I can say it is almost 100% efficient. It really depends on the orchid as well, a near death orchid might not survive. A diseased orchid might not survive either. A stressed orchid has great chances to pull trough ;) Enjoy!

    I bought my first orchid only 2 years ago. Even though I am still considered a beginner, I now have 34 orchids of all kinds and that's all thanks to your method. At least a third of those orchids were discount oncidiums and intergenerics with few or no roots. Having confidence in your disinfecting and repotting method I dared to buy them and I am happy to say I haven't lost a single one of them. They all bounced back in no time. If a beginner like me can achieve that so easily, it means your way works. I just wanted to share that. Thanks. :-)

    Hi Danny! Thanks for this video! Yesterday I bought 2 oncidiums (cambrias :D) from a gardener store, they were in a very bad condition, without flowers, very dehydrated, so they were very cheap (2,5 eur). They were very dehydrated, the medium was falling out from the roots when I repotted this guys, and the roots were so dry, lot of the broke down. I was paniced, but I used your "keep it simple sweetie" style. After I repotted them, and gave them a bath of water with fertilizer, their roots turned greenish, and after one day!!! Their leef hardened, and now they are stable. Thank for the advices again, and now I Know what making an orchid survive means. :)

    Ok, I really like your videos, of course. There was a video recently where you were upset about taking the wrong advice because of the damage it did to your plant. I have to tell you that I appreciate your level-headed and logical approach to your orchid care. It makes complete sense to me to rinse the old potting mixture off the roots. Also, not putting bags over them, not keeping them in the dark, all of these things you've mentioned had me nodding my head in utter agreement. So glad to see someone who's not afraid to disagree with old-school conventional wisdom. I'm sure it can be intimidating. Keep up the great work and I'll keep looking to you for advice!

    Thanks for the kind words :) to be honest I am a pretty stubborn person, but that is just because I followed random advice with very bad results. I always prefer to blame myself than to blame others and if I recommend something I give reasons why I do this, not quotes from the internet. And since this hobby is strongly related to the grower's environment, some things might not apply to others (like the use of moss), so using logic and adapt to his environment is the best thing a grower can do and that's what I encourage everyone to do ;)

    I micro the old media, and use it on my bromiliad, or top dress roses, etc. It gets micro waved and when it cools, I spray with peroxide. My tilles,and bromiliad love it. As a matter of fact, I micro wave even new media. Got some bad NEW media with mold. The manufacturer ( well known)was generous and sent me a new bag, and told me to keep the damaged media. I sprayed with peroxide Nand when it dried I microwaved it. It was usable but I didn't chance it for orchids. Terrific video. Hope to meet you some time. Best

    Hi, keep in mind that the main problem with bark and organic orchid media is that it breaks down and the process cannot be reversed. Once broken down it will only accelerate due to excessive water retention, so you are actually using broken down medium for your bromeliad. As far as I know they are epiphytes, so they might get really affected by the integrity damage, water hold and acidity of the medium in time.

    Very timely video! I recently rescued my very first oncidium and it was in worse shape than I thought. It was sending out a new spike from an old spike and had tons of firm white roots when I repotted it, but for some reason they all just turned to mush the first time I watered it. I must have given it too much water :( today I had to cut 95% of the roots off and I guess I should sacrifice the flower spike too. I'm so sad! Thank you for the video.

    Very nice instructional video, Dani (as always). The only thing that I can add is when you are dealing with orchids with little or no roots the size of the pot should be determined by the root system. Sometimes if an orchid has no roots I will just use sphagnum moss in a 2" (5cm) pot, then sit that pot in a larger pot with stones between the pots. That usually keeps things stable. If it is not practical to put it in a pot that small, then use the smallest pot possible.

  • @MissOrchidGirl

    @MissOrchidGirl

    Hi Wade, I actually do not agree with this although I know it is a wide practiced technique, but I will tell you why :) if my Oncidium will start producing roots and psb like crazy, the small pot will be useless in 6 months, the media will not hold enough moisture for the size of the orchid leading to pleated leaves and stress to water it often. I had this happen to me with a sharry baby, ended up repotting it again after 6 months and having tons of weird leaves. For me the size of the pot for a mature orchid should be appropriate to the size of the orchid, not the root system. Just my way of doing things ;) if you are careful, you won't 'over water' it even in a bigger pot. As well as if the orchid establishes in this pot, I will have those 2 years of not disturbing her which is always good ;)

    We each have ways that work for us. I don't mind moving a plant in 6 months and I realize many plants don't like being moved. Also, I water with a hose and things pretty much get watered together. So many factors go into making up our decisions. I guess that's why there seems to be many ways of providing for our orchids. I guess it all boils down to paying attention to our plants.

    Hi Linda, well orchids will put out roots outside the pot as well, it is their nature :) but it's not ok if there are no roots in the pot at all, or just a few, simply because you need to keep the orchid hydrated and watering it every day is not a solution. If your orchid has roots inside the pot as well, and quite a bit of them, and also the orchid has some room to grow new psb in the pot, all is well :)

    Hi Danni, I have a question which isn't really related but I wanted to ask nevertheless. I noticed recently that both of my Miltoniopsis orchids and two oncidiums tend to grow a of the roots above the media. This is really odd for me, because not only im worried something is wrong with the media but also i'm afraid the orchid is not getting enough moisture by doing so instead growing the roots into the medium. Rob

  • @MissOrchidGirl

    @MissOrchidGirl

    9 жыл бұрын

    Hi Robert, well that's a good question and everyone believes something else. Some people say it's bad media, some say they go towards the moisture, (which is a paradox because the media is more moist that the air around lol) and so on. I believe it's their nature to do that, since they just want to cling on to stuff in all directions so they can hold the orchid attached better to the tree. For your piece of mind, check the media and see if it's broken down, Milts hate broken down media. If the media is in tip top condition then don't worry, it's their habit. Spray the aerial roots every day to keep them from desiccating. This is what happens when we keep epiphyte plants in pots :) kzread.info/dash/bejne/gqJot6V8lpCtirA.html

I plan on repotting it later this week when my carousel orchid pots arrive. • @MissOrchidGirl

    @MissOrchidGirl

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Sarah Jane Williams Hello, usually it should not be a problem in the terrarium, since this orchid is an epyphite it doesn't really need to be potted quite at all. The fact that it doesn't have roots again will make no difference if it's potted or not. The high humidity in the terrarium will help with loss of water though so that's good :) the new growth will produce new roots soon so all should be well, but some wrinkly pseudobulbs are to be expected, so don't panic :)

    Hello Danni ^_^ I have a couple of questions. The first is probably a silly question but should a small Oncidium Twinkle be treated the same way? And the second, I have a small Sedirea Japonica that is in a pot that is too small and dries out quickly. I need to repot it soon. Should I repot it the same as an oncidium?

  • @MissOrchidGirl

    @MissOrchidGirl

    9 жыл бұрын

    Hi Valerie, yes the Twinkle should be dealt with the same way :) as for the Sedirea, she's a bit different. I wouldn't suggest using too much sphagnum moss if using a pot, she likes to dry out pretty fast. I would still go with bark or a mixture with bark and a bit of moss. Small grade bark should be better. I wouldn't add the top layer of moss though, her stem is just soooo prone to rotting, at least mine have been, so better with less humidity, or with water that evaporates fast and a bigger pot. Also potting her with the stem on top of the media is a must. Good luck!

    Hi Edelina, well depends on the season :) since summer is warm and dry in my area, the layer of moss might dry out in one day so I will spray it every day. Now in winter it is not necessary, I spray it every few days when it dries. So it just depends when it becomes dry-ish ;)

    Hi a couple of questions......should orchids be fertilized when they are blooming? Second.....I had my orchid collection outside this summer, they were in one of those cheap plastic greenhouses but protected by shade cloth. Everyone was doing well over the summer but in October we had a one day cold snap with snow flurries which froze many of my orchids. I had dendrobiums, oncidiums and cattleyas. The oncidiums were the worst hit and I have had to cut off all leaves because it is obvious they are done and going to rot. Is there a chance that they will survive and produce new growth from the remaining PSB's. or should these guys be thrown out as there is no hope of recovery. I have grown orchids for years and feel really bad that I allowed this to happen. Best from Canada.

  • @MissOrchidGirl

    @MissOrchidGirl

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hi, oh sorry to hear about the cold snap issue :( it's ok don't feel bad, we all do some mistakes even if we 'know' how to grow orchids, just another lesson for the future :) about your orchids, they can definitely recover from this if only leaves were affected, if the pseuodbulbs are ok, things are ok, they will produce new growth. There might be a set back indeed, due to photosynthesis being impaired, but they are resourceful little things, so just observe the pseudobulbs, as long as there are still some healthy ones, the orchids have a future. About fertilizing while in bloom, it's ok to fertilize the continuous growers, such as Oncidiums, most Cattleyas, Phalaenopsis etc. It would be ok to hold fertilizing on orchids that get a dormancy or winter rest, such as some dendrobiums, particularly nobile and deciduous dens. Phalaenopsis type Dedrobiums don't need a winter rest though. For the deciduous ones, blooms will probably happen before vegetative growth, so at that time it's ok not to fertilize. In winter fertilizer can be cut down though, no matter if orchids are in bloom or not, as days are shorter and cooler, depending on your location ofcourse. So you can dose less fertilizer in winter since growth will be slower too, but no need to completely cut it especially for continuous growers as I was saying, which might be in vegetative growth in winter. Hope this helps and good luck!

Not sure about the beetles, so just check it periodically. I think that with a layer of wet moss it will be prone to producing new roots, but those roots need to stay intact so the hp is crucial I think.. snails are more devious than you think :( hope this helps and good luck!

    Danny I cant find the video where you say that some kind of moss actually hurts the orchids roots. I bought sheet moss, it was the only one I could find available in the store. would this be ok? am trying to help my Intergenetic orchid grow new roots, as it had really bad ones when I repotted it. but am unsure if this kind of moss would help.

    Hi, not sure what video you mean. I never tried this moss but make sure it doesn't have pests. I don't think it will harm the orchid though if it comes from a store it is probably ok. Try not to use moss from nature, that surely has all sorts of bugs. But for orchids we usually use sphagnum moss, it is dried and you can find it compressed in blocks.

    +MissOrchidGirl this kind of moss its usually used for decoration. and it dries very quickly. I havent had any luck finding sphagnum moss at any store here in Colorado, I have been to a couple of stores. am not going to give up though. I will keep looking. if not I will go to amazon. I wanted something available and quicker so I could help my plant sooner, but if not then I will go online.

    Help! I've watched so many of your videos and I've been trying to follow the tips to save a sick Oncidium. Unfortunately I received this oncidium already sick when I ordered it online. I thought I could save it. It had 2 rotten pseudobulbs that had been buried in the media. I've cut away the rotten parts with desinfected scissors, I've used the hydrogen peroxide 3 percent, put cinnamon on the open wounds. Really everything I've learned from your videos. It's been 10 months, the poor orchid it seems is desperately trying to survive because it makes one new growth after the other. But every time I keep having to cut off another rotten pseudobulb, it seems to keep spreading. I don't understand why the pseudobulbs keep rotting? I do not over water, I'm very careful. The only thing I can think of is that this is one sick plant.

    Danni.. I just bought an oncidium cirrhosum on ebay that came straight from equador.. it was in 2 separate pieces when UI unwrapped it and it is small.. one part has 2 tiny pseudo bulbs and a bigger one that is not totally shriveled but some what shriveled and a tiny amount of roots. The other part of the plant is larger and has 3 bulbs and a new growth but has way more shriveling. I potted them separately in a bark mix with lots of sphagnum moss. the guy that sold them to me told me to keep them warm on the DRY side so they are encouraged to grow roots.. but that sounds totally wrong to me! wouldn't they need a little MORE moisture to promote roots??? help...

  • @MissOrchidGirl

    @MissOrchidGirl

    +kim zorza Hi Kim, yes the keeping orchids dry to promote roots is an old myth :) they actually do better with moisture. Yes I would try to give more moisture right now, but also keep things ventilated and refresh the air somehow (so no bags on top of them and things like that). Keep the sphagnum moss damp at all times by spraying but not soggy wet. Also try to not place them deep inside the media, better to be a few millimeters overall on top of the media with the base of the psb. This will prevent rotting of the psb. Other than that just a bit of patience :) Hope they will do well and good luck!

    thank you Danni.. I thought they needed to be moist. they grow under t5 lights in the basement until the warm weather comes and I run tiny fans all day for ventilation and a humidifier when needed. warm is a slight issue though... I try to keep it at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and during the night when the lights are off it goes down to between 59 and 61 degrees. if I run the little space heater it gets too hot in the direction the heater is facing and stays cool behind the heater... lol... but I manage and all of my orchids have been growing during this winter!

    +kim zorza that is not a bad temp for now, but the lower the temperature the less humidity they need so no sogginess or it might end up nasty :) damp is what you need and I think they will be ok :)

    Get comfy... I have a story: I have an oncidium orchid that has 7 roots. :( the bulbs are shrivelled so much and it keeps on throwing out new shoots. Even the new shoots have newer shoots but no roots (that rhymes) I divided the orchid into three parts. I potted two in clay pots in a mixture of bark and sphagnum moss. I water them when the media is dry and spray the top layer of moss with water (like in this video) The last division i left in air. I dunk it everyday in water and let it sit for 10 minutes. I live in Canada and in the summer (now) it is very hot and humid. (No, we don't live in igloos) I decided to keep them outside in indirect sunlight and they seem to enjoy the humidity. There are a couple new roots popping out on all three! I am giving them extra special care. Am I doing anything wrong? Any suggestions? Sorry for the long message. Thanks for your help (I love your videos and I open KZread first thing in the morning to check for new videos!) keep up the good work! :)

  • @MissOrchidGirl

    Hi Adam, well if your orchid starts to produce new roots things are looking bright :) however how big are the divisions? as a general idea, the more psb an orchid has, the faster it will recover as they all communicate and share energy. In the case of dehydrated orchids I wouldn't divide them until they form roots and start to hydrate. But this is just something for the future :) the 'double' growth is a sign of stress, I have it too on some orchids (though for the first time this year). They will produce the new root system of the orchid so all is ok. The point of moisture is to keep the new roots growing, if they don't have enough humidity and mositure the tips will stop, so be careful to not neglect the unpotted one. But if the roots started to grow things should improve over the next month :)

    Hi Lizandra, well that's a rough start in the orchid hobby, but it can work :P First you need to figure out what type of orchids you received, there are different species that need different care. On my channel you will find playlists sorted by species so take a look, it will help you figure out what you have. After that you need to repot them most probably. If they are suffering in many cases it is due to improper pots, media, or rotten roots. Take your time and do some research in the next days, observe the orchids and see the signs, like limpy leaves, weird spots on leaves, black roots etc so you know what to do. Then learn what media is suited for each of them, depending on the species. I'm here for questions :) you can also send me pics, just upload your pic to photobucket and share the link in a comment. Good luck!

    Hi danni :-) i live in the philippines :-) i bought a dancing lady orchid last year from a local garden stall at the public market...people here usually dont pot their orchids because philippines is a tropical country.. They would usually grow them on trees or on a large piece of wood... Since its very humid here... I havent had any experience with orchids... But my family had once when i was a child and it died ;_; ..lol i potted those dancing ladies using a mixture of (little bit)sphagnum moss and charcoal(thats what filipinos who pot their orchids use)then our maid was like "hey youre doing it wrong " and im like "okden"... She said she has a lot of orchids in their province so i trusted her .. She tied my orchids on 2x2 coconut log like pieces about 1 feet long with some spagnum moss around the roots... On a very sunny ,hot ,6 hour sunlight area .After like 2 days i noticed the bulbs started getting wrinkly and leaves started getting like yellowish and like..malnourished.. -,- and she said its fine the plant is just adjusting... Then months passed she left for vacation and never came back .. I decided to take one off the log to see if its doing well and its roots are dead there are very little small like half inch healthy roots near the bulb so i had high hopes so i potted it again with lesser moss to make a drier environment since its very humid here .. But also very hot.. So my question is that can i make this orchid healthy again? What can i do for it? Thanks bunch .. Love ur vids:-) :-) -jess, philippines :-) :-)

    jess joseph de ocampo well I can tell you she was doing it wrong :) well, in some areas mounted orchids can work, in other regions it might not. Not all orchids handle dry conditions or direct sunlight. Oncidiums (the dancing lady) cannot withstand direct sun for 6 hours and look fabulous. My suggestion is to pot it in your previous mix.. either bark, either a mix of bark and a little sphagnum. A bit of sun early in the morning is fine but for the rest of the day it should get bright light but no direct sun. Water it when the media is slightly moist still and I think it will be good ;) good luck!

    Hey Danny, I don't think that burning the alcohol off is the most effective method of sterilization. From my years of stupidly trying to pierce myself at home (stupid stupid child I was) I have learned that burning the metal doesn't necessarily sterilize it, but can release some harmful compounds. I don't know how true that is, but I do know this: Alcohol is effective when it has a long duration of wet contact, and when friction is used in combination with alcohol. So, a better way to sterilize is to use an alcohol soaked cotton ball, and rub each blade for 15 seconds quickly and thoroughly. That will probably be more effective to remove all bacteria etc. :) I usually rub my scissor blades and sing "Edelweiss" so I know I did it long enough. :) Overall, this is a VERY good and helpful video, and thanks for sharing!! One question: Why do you like to remove so many roots that may be dead but not rotting? I always read you should leave many non-rotting (but non living) roots so the plant can be more stable in the new pot. What do you think?

    Hi Astrid, ouch sorry to hear about the problems, I fancied the ear piercings when I was younger, once I learned how much needles hurt I changed my mind and now I am pierce free, I don't even wear earrings bhahaha well about the disinfection, the idea with the flame is that most viruses die at high temps, that is if alcohol doesn't kill them. Some sources say alcohol is enough, some say it's not, so I just use both methods :) when it comes to humans there are much more rigorous methods of sterilization. With orchids, I just want the plant viruses and bacteria to die, couldn't care less about Escherichia coli or other things that don't affect plants and are usually more resilient to external factors since they infect more developed living things, like animals ;) at least that's just what I believe ;) in the end, use the method you are most comfortable with, that's the whole point, so you don't have any doubts. About your question, I see what you did there ;) I think you already know the answer, but I will answer for my other viewers to see as well: I cut any dead root for the very same reason we exist as we do today: anything that once lived and lives no more, will decompose ;) (how on earth can articles write such bull..rainbow is beyond me o.O )

    Hi Astrid. My thought is that if a root is dead then it's rotting. I agree with you about the alcohol. I usually spray my cutting instruments with alcohol and then let them air dry. The "jury" may be out on this though. I have heard quite a few opinions on sterilization for cutting tools..

  • @artistenoire

    I just know that for humans, burning the metal can make more harmful compounds than just soaking it and using friction + a sterilizing agent to clean a tool. I wrote a research paper on hand washing, so I just apply what I learned there to cleaning other things. :) If we follow an animal (including human) sterilization regimen, I don't think the jury is out, but for gardening maybe it is! :) I have left some dead roots on for stability, but usually I just pull the velamen off and leave the stringy bit on, and I don't think it promotes rotting. But I'm no expert either!

    Hi Elizabeth, the link works :D ok I think what you have there is oedema (or edema). They are blisters that will not come off if you scrub them but they might burst, leaving behind translucent spots. They form due to watering the orchid at low temps, here is an article that will help you understand what they are staugorchidsociety.org/PDF/EdemaonOrchidsbySueBottom.pdf if they come off fairly easy they might be scale insect, but from the pictures it looks like they are oedema :) let me know!

    MissOrchidGirl I think that may be it. My Mom has dementia, so her caregivers are taking care of her plants. I see her once a week. I was waiting for the orchid to stop blooming, so that I could take it. It did not take long. As usual with an orchid that is purchased flowering, it was in a container with no drainage and sphagnum on the top. So it felt dry and they kept watering it. The roots were sitting in water. Fortunately, when repotted, it looks like there are a lot of good roots left. So maybe I got it in time and it will be ok. Thank you!! I love your videos. I've learned a lot from them and all of your plants look wonderful. I appreciate your time!
