First time on the tiller was only the 4th time I have ever been on a dinghy. 15kt winds and no previous knowledge of tacking or anything. I'm surprised I didn't capsize! Your videos help a lot!

Are there any really small compact boats that I cn just buy to learn sailing by myself. I mean boat that does not need a parking lot in marine or some special storage. Boat that easy to transport, maybe something like inflating sailing boat. Really want to learn sailing but do not know how to start.

Peter Johnson hi Peter. On most of these single person videos we used the Laser. This is the most popular boat on the planet with over 220,000 made now. Comes with different sized sails. We used the Radial rig which is a slightly smaller sail but much easier to learn in. They come up secondhand a lot. For a few hundred dollars you can get going. But be careful if old condition as sometimes the mast wears a hole through the mast socket with constant turning. Some people let grit sit there and it wears through. They sell a plastic washer now to reduce this. Paying more gets a better boat so it depends on your budget. Check out your local sailing centre for more and local advice. Hope this helps

@@sailaboattv the worst must be hove to. Is there a heaving, hoved or hoving,? I've heard them used. I've heard officially not, only hove, but how can you do the action to hove to, then when you're done youre still hove to?

  • @sailaboattv

@@land7776 Confusing isn't it! Lets blame Lord Nelson..... No idea why it has this name but us Limeys call it "heave to" to describe what is about to happen and then when in that position the boat is "hove to"..... well that's what I call it. English language is a bit crazy., Did you know that port and starboard go back to the times when boats were in dock? Port was always the side the the boats came along side and on the left of the vessel and the steering board (starboard) was on the right hand side of the vessel, and the priority rule came from a boat leaving port had the right of way.
