This is the perfect starting point for getting familiar with the lift bag while scuba diving. It is always good to practice with smaller items until you understand how to safely work with the buoyancy before moving to bigger, heavier items. This is a mandatory skill for the Divemaster Course and the search and recovery specialty.

    Hi Sarah. Good video. I have only had a chance to use a lift bag once during training. The only thing that I have found while diving is an anchor and I didn't have a lift bag then. You always expect to find something important to bring up but as you mention, most of the time will be a weight belt. A friend that has been diving in Cozumel for years tells me that the only thing he has found has been weight belts. Very good pointers on how to use the second stage and octopus so they don't get stuck on the bag and also why you should not use your BCD to carry weight. I have never read or seen anybody explained it that way.

    Thanks for watching! Yes, the most common thing is a weight belt. People just can't hold on to those things 🤣🤣 thanks for sharing your experience with the lift bag. Hopefully we'll all find some treasure one day soon 🤘🙌

    I recently recovered a couple of bicycles in the water from popular diving spots and they were ridiculously heavy. I struggled just using my vest to try to lift them to the surface. I ended up having somebody throw me down a rope and tying the bike to the rope and they were able to pull it out.

    Maybe double check your remaining supply of gas first before inflating ? I know you said less than 10Kg but people are gung-ho and portholes are heavy.(I have seen hire clients come back with multiples) Also extra bottom time distracted with knots etc etc.

    Great tips, and anything that makes the tasks simple will help with that bottom time or air supply like using climbing carabiner and not knots for example!

  • @AzulUnlimited

    It has to do with the lift capacity of the bag. When you buy one, see what the max is and that’s your limit. That range is what you’ll find for standard recreational lift bags

    I've been looking into lift bags and can not find the answer to something. I know that the type of water, depth of the water, the object weight and object volume are all used to calculate what size lift bag or bags to use but how about this question: What about the surrounding water? If for example a tank filled with water and an open top that was 1 meter across in width at 10m height, would the same size lift bag be used to raise the same object in a tank with a 2 meter cross section measurement and 10, height? Or 3, 4 ,5 etc meter width? Does it all depend on the depth of the water?

  • @AzulUnlimited

    Hello Shane! What a good question, as you mention, the key points are "the type of water, depth of the water, the object weight and object volume". From fresh to saltwater the variation on the weight will be directly related to the ambient pressure and also it is at sea level or altitude to calculate the ATA. Regarding the volume of the body of water, a lake versus a swimming pool or a tank, the size doesn't really matter or affect the calculations, if the container is totally full of water and by the time to add a volume of air to the lift bag, the displacement created by this volume makes the water drops out of the container, even that will not affect the calculations because the column or mass of water above the lift bag will be the same ( just decreasing while the bag is ascending), the container even dropping water will be fully fill all the time.... make sense?? I apologize because English is not my native language, so maybe I didn´t explain myself very well LOL, if so please let me know and I will try to explain in a different way!. Thanks for this interesting question. Aitor.

    Never ever use your inflator hose to inflate the lift bag, if you get an uncontrolled ascend of the lift bag you are going with it. Lift bag should be used with inverter lines and dead weights.

    thanks for your comment! same here, we don't agree with that method unless is a small lift bag and the diver is a very experience diver using the air he exhale to inflate the lift bag and not the regulator.

    Why are you stating that blowing in air by mouth (with regulator removed) is dangerous? That’s the most common way to inflate a DSMB for example.

  • @AzulUnlimited

    @AzulUnlimited

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi there!! Ok sooo point number 2, using your main regulator, if you keep it on and blow is perfect because that way is very difficult to over inflate the liftbag, just because the volume of your lungs will be the amount of air you dump inside. Now if you remove it and use the regulator to add air, then is a problem, if the reg free flow can get stuck and the liftbag will shoot tho the surface with your reg entangled and out of your mouth. And if you want to use you exhalation, is no reason to remove your regulator, the different with the SMB is that the open bottom is way smaller than the Liftbag, so is easier to blow inside without your reg, also you inflate and quickly let it go to the surface with a little bit of air that expand on the way up.... with the liftbag we are lifting weight, so the amount of air use to dos, is way more than on a SMB that means more volume and expansion while ascending and as faster ascent if we loose control. Let me know if that doesn't make much sense jijiji or if you have any other questions!! Aitor.

    @@AzulUnlimited Well to start, I believe there should be more knowledge growth about the concept of using a lift bag and why, prior to just initiating the process. If there's something on the bottom that is 10 or 12 or 15 or even 20 or 25 lb the safest method to retrieve that would be to just pull it up from an anchored line at your boat. I would understand if you were showing tricks that you could perform with a DSMB, those could be really useful to pick up that bag of treasure, or even float those tasty Dungeness up for easy surface collection if you have a friend up top. Mostly I would say that it encourages people to attempt device usage incorrectly/dangerously. Lift bags are a specialty like any other and you must be trained correctly. Search and recovery teams are great example. I do however appreciate the scuba community being promoted in general. I apologize if I have offended you.

    @@donr3407 Hello there. No offense taken, we appreciate comments and feedback always. I totally agree with you, search and recovery techniques are not easy, especially to recover big objects. Keep in mind that here we are focus on recreational diving and this video is a refresh for someone that has at least basic training with lifting devices. While teaching the Advanced Open Water course or some scenarios from the Divemaster, we are teaching basic technics for search patterns and recovering small objects with a proper lifting device. A DSMB can´t be used as a lifting device, some of them will burst before reaching the surface due the air expansion, the line is not made to hold heavy weight plus the don´t have any especific point to attache the object. I agree that the best way to lift an object is with a line from the surface using a boat, but we have to teach different scenarios where maybe you are diving from shore and not surface suppor is available or if you have some wind or surface current, the boat will be moving or drifting, the object could be dragged long the reef for example. The recreational diving standards are very clear and we have them to follow: " Use an appropiate lifting device to safely rig and bring to the surface an object that weight no more that 11kg or 25 pounds". More than that is not consider recreational and specialise training is required. I hope that make sense, let us know if have any more questions or doubts. Have a nice day and dive safe
