I just S-Ranked this boss today and I realized that the flames DO give you a hint where they’re going before they jump. They’ll either face slightly left or right just as they’re winding up, and that’s the direction they’ll jump in. It made the second phase so SO much easier

they also never go straight up, so moving directly above them is another approach; i think they only actually launch at one (steep) angle.

That and also (though this is much les exact and doesn't always apply) they'll usually try to match your height at the moment that they jump. So if you happen to be mid jump or on one of the high clouds when they're winding up you know they're going to go for one of the high jumps, versus if you're on a low cloud they'll just do one of the little jumps. It's not a 100% but it definitely has helped me in the few cases I can't move to the opposite side from where they are jumping to change the height of where cuphead is. Might just be me tho

Actually if you look closely in the 2nd phase, you can actually tell which direction the fireballs are gonna jump. It will lean to the left or right side before jumping. Also what I found out is, if you stay on one of the top cloud, you hear the fireball audio cue, you jump and land on the SAME cloud, you will never ever get hit.

1:07 u can see where they jump by looking what direction their looking at their squat position before they jump. It's so much easier if you look for that.

tip: if he doesnt start the fight with the eyes attack just reset because its not 100% to fire 3 parrys at the end of the phase, but it is possible to fire 3 at the beginning of the phase. so if you didnt get all the parrys at the start, but you got one, its possible. if you didnt get any parry at the start, reset. also, count your parrys. if you didnt get enough and he goes into phase 2, you cannot get any parry because phase 2 and 3 does not have any pink objects.

Finally a guide that talks us theough the whole boss. Thank you. Its harder to understand some guides because they don't break down each phase. Thank you good sir

For me at least, using lobber on 2nd and 3rd phase made a massive difference

The way you can figure out where the fire assholes are going to jump is the direction they are facing when they are about to jump and the sound cue plays. You have to look at them exclusively during the second phase until the dragon explodes and moves on to the third phase.

The fire runners actually look at the direction there gonna jump, the hight of the jump depends on where cuphead last was when they took aim. The lob shot is also very good in the second and last faze

Thank you so much. Been attempting Grim for a while now and finally got the S rank. Really good tip about using the charging shot, one that I rarely ever go for as it's so precise, but that works a treat here, think I only hit one fireball with it in the last phase. Strangely though I beat the level in 2:05 but still got S, I thought it had to be under 2 minutes, but if that's a glitch I don't mind at all.

not a glitch, what happens is the time limit is actually 2:08 not 2:00

tried this over 100 times the first 5 runs i did with p sugar i got it. did 3 ultimates in the whole match and finished him very quickly, tysm!

Honestly, lobber is amazing for the second phase and i recommend using it and just dodge. Last stage is also basic with charge.

WHAT YOU REALLY DO at the second phase is use lobber If you see a fire thing about to jump, go to the direction its back is. This will garentee you dogding and with lobber, the second phase finishes pathetically fast.

I have do The Devil, Grim and Robot in one day...but i have need 3 Days for Hilda Berg and 2 Days for the Bird...i only have played few hours oer day most time. For king dice i have big struggle too. Carla Maria was easy too. But i use the red DLC Weapon (very stromg and shoot automatically) and the Parry for extra Life Upgrade. Without this two upgrades the game would be very hard. Every person ranked the Bosses different 😅 Robot was easy because it was the same like normal mode, I have S rank them and the Devil too (only this two).Hilda Berg is for me the very very hardest on expert, I need so much luck for defeat this boss. I think grim difficulty is in the middle. Thank u for this good guide and other guides 🙏👍👍

Surprisingly I did this on the first try unlike most expert bosses btw I used roundabout for phase 1 and the other two Lobber

There is a trick you can do on the 2nd phase for da fireballs you should look at the fireball and see which side has the more outer flame. suppose the yellow ring of flame is thicker on the left then that means he will jump To the right

The fire part is easy coz you know which they 're gonna go coz of the directioj they look.

I think the peashooter and the lobber are the best combo set up for this boss fight.

I just realized the clouds move in the opposite direction in expert and that seems like it would be a bit easier than the direction they move in normal mode, but as I have yet to play expert I could be wrong.

This was easier than so many s rank bosses for me for some reason. Even easier than Djimmi or even Baroness bon bon. Just use lobber and roundabout and ur chillin. Heart ring is also useful too although i dont even think i took any hits

Worst part about this boss is that you can instantly hit retry if he starts with 2 rounds of fireballs since he will the disappear before a second round of parrys and he rarely shoots 3 parrys at once

It's weird how much different bosses can pose different challenges. For me personally, s-ranking him took 7 tries, the least of any non-tutorial boss. Not saying it isn't hard, just saying that it's interesting how different the difficulty ends up being for different people.

@@JustoAllDay yeah, rumor is very hard for me as well, haven't managed to do her yet. Other ones include Wally, Kahl (came so close, only one hit right before a knockout once), and Cala (mostly because of RNG in her third phase)

There is a way to make sure you never get hit on the second phase basically go to the highest cloud and when they giggle, jump of screen, since the fireballs can’t jump off screen they won’t reach you it will give you enough time to dodge and after performing this trick I would almost never get hit on the second phase

2 years later and your still helping people get s rank (also love the streams)

I just beat him on S rank like in only 10 trys, I had hi waaaaaay harder in my memorys at my first run ngl. What helped me the most was in his second phase to not Look on me but fully on the flames. 3 phase was just lobber and try not to hit the flame balls.

Looking which way the flames jump combined with the lobber made this fight almost easy. great comments

I hated this boss I was so mad and I don’t know how but I was 1 hp shooting the projectiles it kinda helped

In normal mode it took me more than 100 attempts to defeat the stupid dragon and another 25 more to get A + and I can't believe it that on my third attempt I achieved rank S I'm very happy, I hope I don't have many problems with the bee, those two bosses and the last islands in rsngo P were the most difficult for me, greetings and excellent video!

Ngl found Grim on expert easier to beat than regular because the switched directions actually help

Weird thing... It took me less time to S rank him in expert than to A+ him in normal. What I found out: Phase 1 is hell. In Phase 2 the flame dudes do the noise and turn either left or right. It indicates in which direction they will jump. So if you know where the dude is jumping from and towards which side it will jump next, it is less painful to dodge. Still sucks, but less. In Phase 3, if you keep to the top cloud, towards the middle-left of the screen, the bubbles usually fly upwards, trying to hit you. Which, if you equip lobber, becomes absurdly easier to beat. Don't get me wrong, this fight is still Cerberus the flying Dragon. But since you are in the top cloud you are already in position to dodge the flame thrower, and it's the second most powerful shot type (I think). Which allows you to to have less attacks to focus on dodging while doing continuous damage. Last, if you beat him, try to NOT FALL DURING THE KNOCK OUT. I fell, the score screen said I had all my parries, all my supers, all my HP, killed him on time, but I got an A+ because I fell AFTER I got the knock out.

I finally s-ranked grim matchstick. I changed the super to invincibility because it’s really useful in the last phase

i always use the twin heart when i’m trying to get an S rank, because as long as you have 3 hit points or more by the end, it will still count

Commenting after getting an S rank within 10 mins after watching this video. There's a very easy way to get an S rank without using the Charge and getting past the second and third phases pretty easily. What's tje most underused weapon in the game? The LOBBER of course!!!! It's very useful in the second phase where you can stay up in the clouds and it will hit far enough and LOW enough cause of its arc that you'll be able to do good damage while being able to dodge. Not very easy when you're using semi auto Charge. Also very useful in the third phase cause the the shots will miss the fire projectiles easily and hit the dragon behind. Used lobber and got an S rank in 2 tries

What's hilarious is that I've died 900 times beating the entire game and you died double that on one boss. That's great.

When I get to that stage witch will be after beppi the clown I will use invincibility or energy beam for the last phase

I know I'm late but I'm going to say it anyway... so in the first phase, you can see that the tail is actually following where you're going like the little stupid fireballs. So I would suggest going ALL the way back to bait the tail and when it's ready to attack focus on the fireballs and the other things. I hope this helps and if you already know... damn it.

For me Grim Matchstick took a lot less time to s rank than all the other bosses I have s ranked so far. Every boss I have s ranked so far have taken a day or two (except Root Pack, Goopy Le Grande, and Cagney Carnation) while only Grim had taken me basically the same time it took me to s rank Goopy Le Grande, a few hours.

I might brag a little, but getting an S here took me 2 tries. No kidding. The change of cloud rotation made it so much easier for me. But to be honest - it took me like 2h to get an A on regular :D

Was one of my first expert bosses beaten

You can tell which way the fire guys are gonna jump if you look at their animation right before they jump.

If you use Chalice or Heart, then if you get past Phase 1, with three parries and Lobber, you're done here. This and Kahl are the only two bosses that are nightmares on Regular, but fairly easy on Expert.

I S ranked him first time but struggled with hilda and am currently struggling on the devil

Trivia: The fireball attack on the 3rd phase is actually coded incorrectly, it's supposed to split into fireballs that go either up and down or left and right, not in all 4 directions at the same time..........yeah

The clouds also move to the right instead of the left on expert mode

I actually normally S ranked Grim Matchstick without any guides but i don,t know why? But there was a glitch with the Ex,s i use 6 Ex,s but when i complete the boss i get an A+ because it says 5/6 Ex,s which i got so TRIGGERED ABOUT but the glitch stopped and I S ranked Grim Matchstick.

I DID IT! YES! I still remember I got 5/6 super meter TWICE, getting an A+ TWICE on expert.

I s ranked this on the 10th try, I didn’t watch the video, I didn’t know about the clouds, I’m just that GOOD

I beat this boss today with a B ranking. Good enough, I don't need to S anything & once I beat a boss, I never ever have to beat them again.

Grim matchstick for me was One of the easiest bosses. For this boss i reccomend using lobber, It Is pretty good in all of the phases

Honestly this one has to be one of the hardest I’ve done

Final phase is a nightmare for me

Expert Grim is so much easier than Normal Grim, and using charge + lobber is the best choice

For me, Grim Matchstick was not so hard, sure, I died a couple times but the bosses that were absolute hell to me were Wally Warbles and Dr. Kahl's Robot

I *SUCK* at this game because I can't S-rank any boss or even beat any boss on expert except, Goopy, the Root pack and Werner. So S-ranking any boss for me is IMPOSSIBLE😂😂😂.

Im gonna be honest… the only thing hard about getting an S rank on this boss for me… IS GETTING THE STUPID PARRYS!

Employ sprite-frame recognition to be one step ahead.

Definitely use the lobber for the second phase and pay attention to what way the walking flames are facing before they jump. Once I started doing these two things, this phase became much easier.
