How To Run Linux on Windows 10 - New WSL 2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux)

Ғылым және технология

WSL 1 has been around for a while giving you the ability to run Linux subsystems right inside of Windows 10 for a while. A handy tool for sure! Just recently Microsoft has updated this feature to version 2.0.
Now in WSL 2 you can actually run a complete Linux Kernel right alongside of Windows 10.
Take a look at this video for the How To: to get it installed, use it, and some of the neat tips and tricks of what it can do for you, and the advantages of having this installed on Windows 10 as compared to a separate Linux computer install.

I originally came in to avoid all the hassle of using pishrink but after seeing the process I forgot about pishrink and was more excited about the linux windows bridge. WOW! Thanks so much. I will try the pishrink after i watch both videos and let you know how it goes.

I noticed that if I do not set the WSL version to 2 before installing the Linux distro. It installs it under version 1. You can verify this by running the command: wsl --list --all --verbose It should be ran after installing the required windows features, but before installing a Linux OS. You can also run this command, un-install the Linux app from add/remove programs, then re-install Linux. Which is what I wound up doing.

Great tutorial and very easy to follow. Thank you for that. I have no questions but I am curious about the wallpaper you have. It seems to be morphing.

Thanks for a nice video! I was not able to access Linux files from Win explorer your way... however, simply giving the path (in explorer): \\wsl$\Ubuntu-20.04 led me right there. Maybe this method was introduced after your video (I installed WSL2 on the 20H2 Windows 10 version).

I noticed that when I installed Linux under WSL1 first that it was accessible via the method in the video. However, after I re-installed under WSL2 I had to use your method. Thanks for posting this.

This was such waste of time. I was very excited for this feature but my c++ programs utilising TCP libs started getting crash because of heap corruption. Not sure what was that. Also the same code started working on a VM but for that I had to get rid of this feature because seems like we can't run a VM workstation solution alongside WSL.

I tried to do something (that I need to make a video for) in WSL 1 and it did not work, but it did work on WSL 2 , also WSL 2 seems to have full docker support and I am sure that is going to be great as well. For me this is a great to have, not a replacement for my VM's.

@@ViciousXUSMC They say it's a full blown VM which actually utilize a hypervisor so it should do anything that a VM does except for supporting serial devices. They are working on it but it still is a long way to go for Microsoft. It can't even simply do a sleep call, how can I rely on it. Its a good feature though and I hope Microsoft make it actually as good as they claim. But for now you can't use it for your development.

its far from technical... Think about what you are trying to accomplish... His tutorial makes it extremely palatable. You don't necessarily have to do everything he is doing.
