    Thank you for doing all these high school track race distance talks! It's my senior year and as of right now my pr's are 2:06 for the 800m, 4:42 for the 1600m, and 10:13 for the 3200m. I like the themes of breaking 10 minutes or 4:40 for the mile because obviously i'm right there! So, just saying these videos are extremely helpful! Thanks!

    +John Marenkovic I am running very similar times to you and I also am in my senior year. My 800 is 2:07, 1600 is 4:45, and 3200 is 10:13. How many miles per week are you running right now because our team is doing about 30 per week but I feel like we should be doing more.

    +im a NOOB ar u Right now I'm doing about 45 miles a week. That is pretty much what I can handle. If I try to go above that for consecutive weeks things start to go wrong. During the more intense part of the season I try to bump my milage down to about 40-45, maybe even high 30's and I do more speed less junk miles. I know it can be hard sometimes to get in the proper amount of miles if the level of your team isn't at your own. My team was doing about 15 a week if that. It was pretty bad... I ended up talking to my coach and that fixed it.

    Hey thanks Sage, I found this talk extremely encouraging, even when it’s years old. I just ran my first 3k this year at Oregon city (maybe you’ve run there?) and I ran 10:23. Haven’t done much speed work yet though, I’ve just been focusing on building my base. Hoping that the speed will come later on when the season starts. Fantastic Video Sage I love all the information and education your training talks provides. I'll be running a relay trail marathon with my dad in two weeks where I have to run a 25k segment with some significant elevation gain. So far I've been mostly focused on road racing but struggled with pacing myself when hills and technical terrain come into play. You have talks on marathon pacing and such but nothing for Ultra Marathon or generally Trail Race pacing. I'd love to hear your two cents on it!

    Hello Sage, I dont know how experienced you are with weight lifting, but if you are, could you talk about types of lifts beneficial for running in a training talk? An example being squats or deadlifts, and how certain lifts can be good for particular racing distances like 1500m or 5k or 10k. I am a college runner trying to get into lifting so I can hopefully get a little faster over the next few years. I run the 3k-5k mostly and 8k in cross. Thanks!

Generally speaking its 3 mile runs on most workouts. Broken up depending on your pace for that particular workout. I dropped from 12:20 to my 10:10 in about 1 month on this plan. Is my mileage too high. I'm a sophomore in highschool and I run about 68-70 per week for XC, but I want to go sub 9:55 for the 3200 and 4:31 for the 1600, so I plan on adding two 4 mile morning runs each week to up my mileage. My team runs our easy days (about 8 miles in the afternoon) at between 6:30-6:45 or so. We used to go faster, but recently we've been sticking in that range. I really can't run slower because that's the pace we go and I don't want to do less mileage because the coach has a schedule he wants us to follow. On Sunday long runs I normally do 13-16 at 6:50-7:30. For tempos we often go around 5:40-5:50. I can't ever remember my legs not feeling tired for a race, and I'd like to know what you think about this?

    I’m guessing you got burned out by your senior year, right? I’m probably about the same fitness you were here as a junior (10:30 solo 2 mile, around 5:40ish pace for 4 mile tempos) but my easy runs a like 1-2 minutes slower, and I do closer to 50 mpw. What kind of interval workouts were do doing at that time though? That’s kind of my weak point, and if I want my 2 mile sub 10 I think that’s what I need to work on.

  • @austinmolitor7283

    @austinmolitor7283

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@benthecool6607 At the time I wrote this comment, I was doing a tempo on Mondays, hard track intervals Wednesday, and some kind of fartlek or something Friday. Somehow, I did not get burnt out. Once Covid hit in spring of my junior year, I started doubling every day, and then I averaged mid 90s every week for the next 14 months or so. Instead of 3 shorter faster workouts, my coach started having me and the other faster guy on my team do long cutdown tempos, like 8 miles, starting 5:50, cutting down like 4 seconds a mile. That way we wouldn't push too hard the whole time. We would also do cruising workouts, like a 300 at 5:20 pace, then one at 5:50, and alternating, or other workouts like that with the faster distances slowly increasing in length as the season went on, up to like 1200 at 5:20, then 400 at 6:00, so almost like a tempo where you're changing the paces. Since the season was shortened bc of Covid my senior truck season, I ran a lot of races in a short amount of time. In XC I hit 15:22 for 3 mile, and for track, I ran the 3200 first then the mile each meet, and the extra mileage really helped me in that second race. I hit 9:42 and 4:33 for my best times. Then, going into college, I chose a team thinking I could still run higher mileage because of what I was told when I was recruited, but the coach wanted me to drop to 60mpw when I actually got to campus, but long story short, I am no longer on the team and had a few rough months of training and lack of motivation because of that and got Covid with some long term effects on my lungs. But, now I've found another kid to train with, and after my lungs mostly recovered (still dealing with some issues), I run between 80 and 90 mpw, which feels like more than the mid 90s I was doing before bc I went to college in a very hilly state after living in the flat central US plains for my whole life. And now, surprisingly, I feel better than ever and just ran an 8:56 3k indoors and am still having fun running despite being kicked off my team and facing a lot of setbacks. Sorry for the super long winded answer.

    @@benthecool6607 Also, at that point, I wasn't doing as good of workouts, they were mostly super hard intervals, but now I've mostly been training at 10k pace, and I'm able to hold faster paces longer, but I don't feel as tired after workouts.

    @@austinmolitor7283 I really like that idea of cruising tempo things, probably a bit less monotonous than straight tempos. I’m pretty unlucky in that I don’t really have anyone around me to train with, we have a 9:14 2 miler, a 9:43, then me, then a 10:45. I don’t take the speed workouts very hard since I have a tendency to burn out really quickly, so I’ve just done 400s at around 1:10ish. What should I be aiming to hit later in the season for things like 800s or 1ks?

  • @austinmolitor7283

    @austinmolitor7283

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@benthecool6607 There's going to be a wide range depending on the type of workout. If it's more of a cruising workout, with like maybe a 1 minute jog in between, 10k pace or so is good, then work down a bit with a lot of reps. I'm guessing you lack the endurance side more, so doing longer workouts at less vigorous paces will help with that.
