I saw the most beautiful dress online, and wanted to make it myself. However, it had a ruched bodice. Thank you SO SO much for this wonderfully simple tutorial!

This tutorial is fabulous and I live for ruching. I think if I was to ruch fabrics, I would go for a stiffer taffeta or a heavyweight bridal satin since cheaper satins aren't exactly pretty looking with all the puckers.

Hey! Does the second stitch prevent it from breaking? I’m trying to figure out how to secure it.

  • @onlinefabricstore

You go back over with a regular stitch and that locks things into place. Check out step 3 for more details!

So do I take out my bobbin on the bottom of my sewing machine to not add a back stitch as you said in the beginning?

I think the bobbin thread is visible at 0:28

I’m trying to do this technique for a bust detail, except I need the fabric to be able to still be stretched out to its original length. Can I use elastic thread in the bobbin when I sew across the gathers and give me what I’m looking for? Or is what I’m talking about a different technique all together?

Was it a technique called elastic shirring? I hope you figured it out 🙂

@@PuffKittyit was not shirring, I actually just ended up sewing across the gathers with elastic thread in the bobbin. I am not sure if there is a name for it or if it’s simply “ruching with elastic thread” but it worked. Thank you!

Can you use this on elastic fabric? 🤔

Sure! You might just have to mess with the tension a little to get it just right.

If making clothing, on average, how many inches should I add in length if I want them ruched?

Why does my thread always break when I pull it

  • @onlinefabricstore

    @onlinefabricstore

    2 жыл бұрын

You might want to get a different thread (like a polyester thread) that is a little stronger or just really take your time pulling the fabric through. Also, make sure that your stitch length and witch are the longest possible. If none of that works, play with the tension a little bit and see if that helps!

I think that’s why she said to make sure to backstitch. If you do that it should “lock” the ends in place.

Really any apparel fabric will work! You don't want the material to be to thick, but this could be done on most cotton apparel fabrics, satins, spandex, and so much more!

It doesn't work very well on thick fabrics, but thin and medium fabrics should work well.

You can but make sure it isn’t too thick. I suggest you test it on a small piece of fabric to see if the fabric can be ruched
