    I recently bought an LG UHD drive (BP60NB10) specifically for this purpose. After the quick flash process (which was a little tricky since the SDF Tool program window was compacted down really small on my screen for some reason), it worked like a dream. It also came with a Cyberlink Media Suite disc (I made sure to uncheck the automatic firmware update feature, just in case). My favorite thing about the particular model I bought (which wasn't even advertised, and I discovered later through the user's manual) is that I can plug it straight into the USB port on a 4K tv or monitor, hold down the eject button while the tray is open and suddenly, I can use it as a normal 4K Blu-ray player!

    @@jerryspann8713 You should only need the one USB connection, since it's just a matter of playback. Just in case, I'd strongly recommend looking into a powered USB hub. They're usually super cheap and provide more power than a TV's USB port typically offers. This is also useful if you want to watch movies from an external drive with larger storage, as TVs typically won't recognize a 4TB drive, for instance.

Should I clean every seasons dvd and look at the playback of each epi on the dvd afterwards to make sure none of them are not freezing? Or looking the first epi after cleaning the dvd will tell me the rest of the epi are fine?

I use the extra features and special features that's why I use the iso format. I don't like how makemkv separates each chapter. I have to go each chapter individually and it's time consuming since all the chapters says unknown. I spend more time going thru each channel 1 by 1 and it's a very tedious and annoying process that I need to go thru. I want to use the iso format not the mkv format. I don't use any transcoding and encoding when playing the movies. I treat the movies like I'm loading the discs on the 4k player but done exactly the same way on android. There are dvd players that run android on amazon. I was even looking for a portable 4k player that is similar to the portable dvd player that does the same thing as the portable dvd players but plays the 4k discs instead of dvd discs but they don't exist. No, because it has to be 4K compatible. But some drives that are only Blu-Ray compatible can be made into 4K compatible with a firmware update. But note that even some 4K drives may not be compatible, you have to go by the ones on the list. And even some of those have to use a firmware update from the list to make it work with MakeMKV.

    @@RobHoffman83 Maybe a dumb question. Why compress to mpg? I usually compress using MKV, HEVC or H265 10 Bit (NVENC) profile. It works pretty quickly if you have a 30 series Nvidia GPU or newer. I have a RTX3070 and RTX3050 in different computers and they both can use the NVENC encoding with Handbrake. I vary the bit rate (11MB to 20Mb), depending on the movie. The more detail I want to preserve, the higher the bit rate. Instead of being 50 to 65GB, the movie size is about 12GB to 25GB. I leave the audio as Passthrough to keep the highest quality.

    OK Mike, I think we have to agree to disagree re. the definition of "it couldn't be any easier"... As an aside, in the UK you would technically be breaking the law by doing this (even making copies for _private_ use of discs you already own), hypothetically opening yourself up to a substantial fine; the US legislation regarding making copies for private use is different in that respect I believe.

    uk have exceptions Copyright law has been changed to allow you to make personal copies of media (ebooks, digital music or video files etc) you have bought, for private purposes such as format shifting or backup. Is CD ripping legal in the UK 2023? Under new exceptions to copyright law, first initiated by the 2011 Hargreaves Review, people will be no longer be committing a crime by format shifting copies of CDs, ebooks or films they have bought. It will remain, however, illegal to make copies at home for friends and family.

  • @maidsandmuses

    @maidsandmuses

    @@dave24-73 Indeed, these exceptions were made into law in August 2014, but these exceptions under copyright law were *revoked* by the High Court on July 17th, 2015, following a challenge by the Musicians' Union, UK Music, and The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, thus making format shifting illegal again, less that a year after the exceptions were introduced. The High Court decided that the government had been legally incorrect by not introducing a compensation scheme for songwriters, musicians and other rights holders who faced losses as a result of their copyright being infringed.

    The reason some of us like the tech mumbo jumbo is because we are IT professionals (experts?) ourselves and don't need someone else to give us the exact steps. If you could describe the very specific part of the process that a normal attempt to rip an ISO would fail, and give a general "do this instead, and use this tool for this part of the process" we can do it ourselves.

    Why don't just use a UHD Bluray player connected to the TV or Beamer? A NAS for 100, 200 and more UHD movies will cost you to a lot of money, time, space, energy and you have to store the BluRays anyway. The BluRay ist the perfect storagemedium for movies and will probably survive for decades. You should ask yourself, how often do you want to watch the same movie? I would say, at maximum once every two or three years. Then a new technologie emerges, you are fascinated and you have to do all the work once again. I personally startet with VHS cassette...😊

  • @rauland

    @rauland

    5 ай бұрын

    Number of reasons: 1)no longer need to store the physical disc in your house - more storage/less clutter 2) able to watch it anytime, anywhere, anyhow you want 3) no longer need a 4kUHD player for home viewing (which are getting more scarce than the movies themselves) 4) digital backup incase anything happens to your discs 5) using a media server like Plex, Kodi, Emby, Jellybean (?), etc makes it easier to sort and catalogue your movies. Can browse by genre, decade, actor, studio. Can creat custom playlists (do I watch star wars by release date or episode number… make a playlist in either order). 6) take your movies virtually anywhere And if you rip them properly, you can’t even tell the difference between disc and digital (and the audio is just as good).
