This is the very event that lead me to your KZread page. I was on a road where the asphalt ended and it turned into gravel and the road ended and I had to “somehow “ make a U-turn.As an inexperienced rider I dropped my 900 lb Harley Davidson Electra Glide when trying to turn! I knew I needed to research directions on how to turn safely. So that night I went to KZread and your channel came up, I then went to what I called Robert Simmons skid row addiction. I saturated myself with hours and hours of your class sessions! The rest is history!just two years later I placed Third on a motorcycle rodeo in expert class! Thanks Robert Simmons for paying it forward 😊

That’s an awesome story! I found Robert in a similar way- this Spring -I bought a bigger bike and I dumped it turning onto a dirt road with an uneven surface. I am now super motivated to get through exercises 1-10 correctly and with ease then we will see what comes next. I’ve got 1-4 down working on #5.
As an experienced rider of 35 years I'm always looking for improvement, Life is about educating ourselves. Great videos, Thanks.

Great job, indeed! Impressive and very important. I´ve got a couple of sharp curves in my mind, here in berlin (germany) where the wind regularly deposits rubble and rubbish on the road. A 90 degree blind bend near my home where you allways have to be aware of paper, plastic bags, recently covid masks, in fall leafs beeing on the road mid turn, heck even leftover carparts and dirt from cardrivers underestimating that curve and crashing into the divider (about once a month) ! People allways frown on me going around that bend very slow. I don´t care. I just wanna go home and arrive safely! Even more so, since I´ve gotten a new bike, I´m not jet gotten used to. Yes it´s a heavy one, again. :) I treat this bend as a gravel road. More often than not it IS. During winter, our roads get sprinkled with gravel against icy conditions. You can´t allways avoid that. You have to go to the gravelroad mindset, or you´re busted. Keep it up!

I grew up on gravel roads and always had a healthy respect for them. My driveway is gravel for about 65 yards and about a 7% grade up to the paved road for about 50 ft so clutch and throttle control are very important, truthfully I've been doing it for so long it's almost natural. I have three Harleys, an Electra Glide Ultra Classic 92, Springer Softtail 91, and my absolute favorite, my 1978 flh bobber. The only one that causes me to take a little extra care is the Electra glide, I've only had it for about a year now, and it's the least ridden, and that's why I have been watching videos like yours, I'm 61 years old and never to old to learn more techniques. Great video, and you have a new subscriber.

I've been stuck on gravel hills because of a 4 wheeler blocking me, worked construction. Gravel is evil. I used to carry a small textured piece of metal to put under my kick stand to act like a snow shoe when I had to park. All that self taught. Life would have been so much easier if I could have watched your videos back then. So thanks for sharing knowledge

Rob, good point with exercise number 4 and gravel, makes total sense. The other VI preloaders already made the spot on comments. On the lighter side, when I think of riding on gravel, I cringe at the dust that is going to blanket my ride including the hard to reach areas. Staying in the friction zone no doubt is key. Thank you as always and I hope you, your queen and stable are well. Be and ride safe.

This is one of the most relevant videos I have seen. I had asked another well known motorcycle instructor to do a lesson on gravel riding and it never happened. I have ridden for over 55 years but have always avoided gravel and when not able to avoid it have been extremely tense and nervous. I am fortunate that I have never gone down due to gravel, but that has not prevented me from being fearful of it. When on pavement, I am known by my riding buddies to be fearless. Thank you for the informative video.

Awesome stuff Lt! This reminds me of my motor training at NCSHP where we took the motors off- road and through various terrains. You never think that you'll need this skill set until the day that you do. Earlier this year I was performing my duties as a lead ride escort for a group ride up to the mountains and back. The trip was flawless until Google navigation had me make a right turn and the road suddenly dropped off from pavement to gravel after the turn was complete. There was no turning around as the road was downhill and I had several riders that had committed before the gravel dust cloud appeared following me. I was very thankful for my training on that day and I knew exactly what to do. The road was a good half mile with banked curves before ending at a paved intersection. No one dropped their bikes and we all laughed about our off-road adventure once we returned back to the dealership 🤣. Train like your life depends on it because one day it just may! Keep up the good work Sir!

Within the first two months of having my first motorcycle, I accidentally pulled into a sloped gravel driveway to turn around because it was raining and I was trying to head back home. By the time I realized the driveway was gravel, it was too late and I went into a downward slope u-shape gravel driveway, but kept the momentum while staying in the friction zone and maintained control even though the back tire skid momentarily turning to the left, made it through the turn up the slope and back onto the pavement! Your channel and others instilled great knowledge in me to the point that I was able to react accordingly! Oh, and I had a passenger on the back! Thank you!

Wow! Exactly! You really had no choice. 😆
I rode 7 miles gravel road with Buffalo’s on and about it. Stopped at visitor center at end. That was fun. Lol. I have a full dress Triumph Trophy SE. I need to practice u-turns like he says as I am not confident enough yet. I live on a gravel road so get lots of practice making deliberate moves. No front brake. Hold on loose and straight up. The bike will stay up if you don’t hang on too tight. Let the front wheel move with the gravel. If you panic as the front wheel goes left and right you will drop it.

Rode my 4 week new to me Ultra Classic from SC to MO back in the spring. Never saw so much gravel in my riding career. I made it but I was puckered on more than one occassion.

Great info!!! I did that as common sense .. I dumped out in my teens on wet leaves (you’d think at 40 I’d have figured out u treat those leaves like ice.. whcuh I did thank the lord).. Making those tight turns straight up come in handy for a LOT AND YES GRAVEL STILL GIVES ME PAUSE .. The gravel is the boss of me.. I try to avoid lots with gravel .. partly tho bc of my feet slipping out when I put my feet down (not to duck walk.. I feel safer in two wheels not with feet down)

I used to think that since I rode dirt bikes that gravel would never be a issue. Boy was I wrong. Got my first street bike and I’m sure it looked like I was just learning to balance 😂.

Robert, so timely for you to do a video covering this topic. So even though I started riding streetbikes in 1979, that does not equal 44 years of experience! I've ridden an FXR since '99 and have felt quite confident in my ability on it. U turns on a 2 lane road no problems, 2 up even, been on gravel and dirt several times without issues, heck my driveway is rocks and dirt. But I realize now I was not being the Boss. I was extremely lucky. And that luck ran out back in Nov. On an Ultra Classic, missed my turn, looking to turn around I turned into what i thought was a gravel lot but actually was dirt, gravel and sand. Totally misread the situation. Lost the front end in the sand and I did the exact opposite of what Robert teaches, I pulled in the clutch with the front wheel turned almost to lock and down we went. Silly me trying to keep it from falling tore my bicep out of my shoulder and also did other damage. None to the wife or the bike. Had surgery in December and am down and out for 3-4 months minimum. You can bet your sweet peas that when I get back in the saddle I'm gonna be doing lots of practice on these exercises. When I think I've developed some skillz maybe we'll see about getting Robert back up to NC for a session so he can humble me! So folks, don't be like me and fool yourself into thinking you've got it covered. If you can't do what he teaches then please, get busy and learn these slow speed maneuvering skills. Again Robert, Thanks for what you do. Much appreciated...a little too late!

Hey brother. I’m so sorry that you were injured. The silver lining is your bride wasn’t hurt. If that were me, I’d rather I get hurt than my bride. Get well soon buddy and I already have plans to come back out to North Carolina. Hope to see you there whether you can ride or not. 👍🏾

@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle Where can I get info about that? I looked on your schedule, just didn't see anything.
Your gravel is a lot smoother than Allen Street street in Tombstone which is covered in 4 inches of dirt and has horse and wagon track on it.

Good video; sub.I’ve dirt biked my Harley FXR and Sporty all over crazy roads in the Rocky Mountain west and Black Hills. My buddies followed me on their Road Kings and Softails. Point is, it can be done, if you are competent and careful. Sure, you gotta go slower than on a KLR or KLX (or other dual sport/dirt bikes) and choose your line more carefully, but it can be done. Practice.

To my understanding you can lock up your rear wheel and you won't drop the bike. Dirt bike riders do it routinely. But lock up The Front wheel and there's a good chance you'll go down.

My driveway is gravel & on an incline. It's the first thing I hit leaving on a ride & last thing coming home. I 've only dropped it once returning home going up & that probably had to do with leaning into the turn.

Wow that’s pretty much an adventure every time you leave and return your house.
It is my opinion that absolutely every rider should take a motorcycle safety or skills class. I took one and it was just awesome. I learned so many things and came out with more confidence than when I came in.

At age 75 I just got my learners permit. I'm required in WA state to take riders education classes. The two day course gave me to confidence to start riding again... safely. I believe that all drivers should be required to take refresher courses. Perhaps then fewer MC riders will get killed by idiots in cars.

@@davidcox8961 Yeah I was required in PA to do a 2 day course in order to get my license as well. Frankly, I'm glad it is required because I would have been far worse off going out there without it.
I just bought some land in the North Carolina mountains, and I had 6 inches of gravel dumped on my dirt driveway. The driveway is uphill and I have to turn to the right to park it. I hope I don’t damage this brand new bike. I just got.

First time I ever encountered gravel was at night riding with a buddy a couple summers ago. It was like a side road that only went out as far as a car length and we had to turn around. He duck walked his bike to do so. I followed the steps as stated in this video as I usually do and didn’t even set a foot on the ground. I did feel that uh oh moment which is how I found out it was gravel but I opened my clutch hand a bit, preloaded a bit more and completed the turn. First time I also ever trusted and believed. Side note, my bike at the time was 1800cc and his was like 900 or maybe less. I felt bad because he had been riding a lot longer than me.

At 0:30, that’s the pace riding on ice, you can safely go faster than that on a gravel road. The bike will be more stable that way.
