You guys crack me up!! I didn’t know that all of my toeside problems were due to the scratch on my lense. 😂

Just want to post a note of thanks. I've been struggling with my jibes and couldn't figure out the issue. Your "How to ride toeside" video got me over the hump. In particular the need to continue all way around to the new tack rather than getting stuck in that straight downwind direction. I watched your video this past Tuesday night, and on Wednesday focused on your tips. That resulted in me staying dry through most of my turns and on foil all the way to the new toeside tack. I still need more practice riding toeside, but at least now I'm to the point that I can practice that skill. I thought I was never going to reach this point, so it feels like a huge breakthrough in my progression.

Great tips, do you have any advice on riding upwind most efficiently? I find that it's a lot easier to kill your power compared to kite-foiling and it's not as obvious with how to position and power your wing vs. pointing with the foil, where to position your hands on the handle(s), ...

A tip that's made a huge difference for me is lift your rear handle (but not too much because the wing will dive down). This has a two-fold effect of bringing the wing closer to the nose of the board and making the wing more horizontal where it maximizes forward pull. You need to be up on foil already of course because the wing tip will usually be in the water otherwise. I think it has improved the efficiency of my riding overall, actually. Getting upwind was always a struggle, now it's feeling fairly natural.

@@skreebop yup I put the strut horizontal with the Horizon as a guideline and it works a treat

I’m working on this stuff right now in the gorge. The gybe felt intuitive but the foot swap has me stumped.

Good stuff. Wish you would have dealt more with handling the wing through the turns. Seems much easier going toe to heel. Going heel to toe, seems the wing doesn't come around as easy and I end up going downwind more than I'd like. Also, seems to help to make sure there's plenty wind to power through the turn when learning.

It just takes time to go heel to toe and you will get better and better at it. You will get better at edging harder into the wind and you will always have power and in return will go less down wind! You will get there!

Really great content guys as always, I wish I was here already 😅 I'm actually stuck way earlier in the foiling process: I come up on foil, then I smash into the water very soon... Can you please make a video on how to maintain balance on the foil? Thank you in advance :))

The moment I get up on foil, I go upwind a little. Another tip, remember where you placed your feet. If they are too much forward, it’s harder to go on foil. If you place your feet too far back, the foil will shoot up too fast, come out of the surface and crash down again.

Hey Damien I was wondering do you only ride toeside on your preferred side (regular) or do you have two different toesides. What do other foilers do? Thanks!!

  • @DamienLeroyYouTube

Everyone is different! I can ride both sides but usually one is more dominant for sure. I as well prefers on way to be more dominant! Most ride one direction only toe side Aaron!

@@DamienLeroyKZread Aaron and I have been learning together. I personally found it more straightforward to learn heelside gybes on both sides first before mastering foot switches on foil. Interesting to see the differences here. But I had a wacky progression. I'm a goofy rider and started succeeding on my regular-heel-side gybes first but eventually goofy clicked and soon far surpassed them. I think what will happen is when I learn foot swaps I'll start just swapping into my dominant side and start losing my regular toeside riding ability. To some extent I'm trying to actively dial it in hoping I can be as ambidextrous toeside as I am heelside regular or goofy. --- So maybe a follow-up - when do you find yourself riding your weak toeside? It seems like it would be situational - it certainly seems like it takes less time to set up if you need to turn immediately, but I wonder if e.g. you might do it deliberately to end up on your "weak" toeside to make a subsequent toeside tack more manageable?

  • @DamienLeroyYouTube

@@jacobstr Usually you end of just riding your good toeside but sometimes you use your other if you are at a point break location and want to ride front side and it happens to be on your week side. Only reason really! Usually you end up with one dominant side.
