The old man across the way from me took his own live last night. He was around 80 years old but still in good shape, or so we thought. I wasn’t really close to him but still … there’s another hole in the universe. He was part of the environment, part of my environment. I turned 60 two weeks ago, a reminder of time passed, time present, time to come. This man’s passing was another punch in the face, a punch I have taken many times over the past 60 years. A guy asked me one time after I attended 5 funerals in 6 months, he asked “Are you alright?” I said “Yeah, you get used to after a while.” He said “No you don’t” Probably the truest statement I ever heard. I guess the old man was battling cancer of some sort. He lived alone, seemed to be living alright, nice car, still active. We knew something was wrong when we saw a note taped to the inside of his window, it said -Call 911, I’m sorry- I don’t know if he had family, never saw any vistors over there. The thing about death, it’s not the sadness or the grief we have to endure, it’s the emptiness for which there is no resolution. Yeah, we get on with our lives, maybe even manage a few smiles now and then, but every one, every single one of those people who have left us have taken a piece of us with them. So as we mindlessly meander around trying to find the key to the universe in the pursuit useless material possessions, once in a while, just for a moment or two, take time out to remember those no longer with us who made us who and what we are. Sometimes our perspective needs a little realignment. “I’m gonna be a happy idiot, and struggle for the legal tender. Where the ads take aim and lay their claim to the heart and the soul of the spender. And believe in whatever may lie in those things that money can buy. Eddie Pinero, it's ok to believe in miracles and not magic. When the Spirit of the Universe thought to create solid substances in physical form , Spirit's fleeting thought was, if I do this out of nothing , no space no darkness, no light, no time not even emptiness existed, then all of creation will be blind to the fact that everything is constructed entirely of true magic and the living will always ponder ( god) , not the magic.
