i like the pipeline of "wrong intuition" -> "wrong analysis" -> "right analysis" -> "right intuition", it's a great example of a simple model explaining something that is counter-intuitive ("why can't i keep loading games mindlessly to turn my wrong intuition into right intuition?")

Just the curiosity mindset has fundamentally changed my relationship with the game. Instead of oh my champ is bad here or my team is bad just simply being curious on what I could have done in the review takes off so much rage. The game is actually quite fair especially in low elo like me.

Reviewing games is something I picked up from chess. The cycle of playing a game and reviewing it and going again is kind of addictive when you get into it. There's so many tiny details I'd never have noticed. I just hope league had an organizing system for replays like lichess has, where I have over a 100 studies where I store my key games categorized by opening variation. You could have folders based on champ, matchup, etc.

I'm a nursing student and nurses implement a similar system when doing things that allows for continuing to give better care and adjust to circumstances. The Acronym is ADPIE: Assess, Diagnose, Plan, Implement, Evaluate. So you assess the information you have, then you diagnose what the problems are from that information, Plan a course of intervention, implement those ininterventions, then evaluate the results - and it loops into itself. So once you've evaluated you then assess amd diagnose the new information gained from the previous evaluation.

Pattern recognition is an aspect of "IQ". In fact, the earliest IQ tests (ravens progressive matrices) tested for exactly that. In terms of predicting future performance (in ranked that would be rating) IQ test scores (a proxy for general intelligence) are second only to past work (replays and statistics of past games). I definitely agree that most players have huge room for improvement, but if you sampled just these metrics: IQ scores and games played for each hero in the last year, I believe you'd be able to strongly predict MMR, as well as see some pretty obvious patterns. If you took some more in depth statistics available on many websites, you could pinpoint a player's mmr with little analysis (as you two already do).

In a totally different sport there is concept of minimum effective volume, The least amount of effort you need to improve. The maximum effective volume, the most you can do before more practice becomes either useless or junk volume. And the important one for this discussion maintenance volume. the least you can do to maintain your current skills. If you go from 15 games per week down to 5 games per week you won't get worse, you will either maintain your skills or get slightly better. The effort needed to maintain a level is much less than the effort you had to put in to get there. Don't be afraid of losing skills if you have to cut down on practice time, you won't. This is a really bad mindset and demotivating to a lot of people

Something funny I noticed: I recently started dieting and looking into the fundamentals/science behind it and it's interesting how many parallels there are to what you described. Concepts like TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) which effectively means how many calories you'd need to eat to maintain your current weight or in other words your maintenance volume of calories. We know now that height/weight/gender are all important in calculating this (and everything else about your diet really) so it leads me to wonder how many other factors we could find for the similar skill-related concepts

Love all of this. But I get stuck how to have good learning cycles regarding mechanical mistakes. Like how do I translate "oh, i missed my skillshots, need to work on that." into actually getting better at skill shots. Like, i've spent thousands of hours trying to hit bombs as zilean on champs with high mobility/dashes and have not improved much in several seasons. Hard to feel like I can get any more intentional with my practice and yet I see no improvement. The more I listen the more I agree with what you're saying. But it doesn't motivate. It discourages me. Like, if I can't do basic mechanical things in game as the champ/role I enjoy.. then I probably shouldn't keep playing. Make it make sense.

Ask someone to get into a game with you, 1 on 1, and the other person plays a high mobility champ. Then try to hit him. Focused practise. Other than that, try to get more into their head. Watch videos about hitting skillshots. Look at the map, and see where you have angles in which you can predict movement very well. Midlane for an example, around the edges of the walls that lead into the river. People will tend to dodge away from those. Get into the review and see how people are dodging your bombs on the regular. See if there is a tendency. However, all of this requires work and some dedication, and most definitly not motivation.

Hi coaches, I had a question regarding reviewing your games and implementing what you've learned from them. Every game I lose i look back at the first 15minutes of the game to find improvements. However, the problem i'm having is that even after recognizing mistakes during my VOD reviews I keep making this same type of mistake in later games. So it seems that i can't implement the things i've learned from my VOD reviews. It feels like i only can see a mistake after its made and while playing and when you have to make split second decisions i keep making bad plays. (I'm currently Emerald 2, jungle main. I hitted diamond 4 few weeks ago and demoted back to E2 over a cours of 23 games)

Realizing that you do those mistakes is the first and also necessary step to change. What usually follows (after some time and some more realizing first) is ability to pick up on those mistakes faster, maybe just after they happen instead of in review. The next will be ability to recognize them while they happen and this is when you will start to be able change what you do. Either with ideas from reviews - what you tough you should have done instead or come up with a better play during the very moment. Also if the solution is to not do something you do (like facechecking) then you would realize you are about to face check - and knowing it is often a mistake (assuming your role isn’t to do it) you would stop yourself and do not go into that brush. It is similar to how therapy works and in both cases it takes a lot of time but works. So give yourself that time and be patient realizing is a step forward and what is so amazing in this is that following steps you will start doing naturally after some time of step one.

Also knowing what I have said you can explore stuff like: how can I pick up on mistakes faster in game - what are the tells for this play being bad, what information availble I missed (sometimes it will be lack of information as a reason for a mistake - some decisions require necessary conditions). As well as other techniques that you can come up with on your own - maybe the other one I will say is thinking of better plays instead of those mistakes. Then it is not on you to decide in split second.

I don't find your micro/macro framework very helpful. But I don't think about the game in terms of micro and macro, I don't use that language. When I review I go to 1 bad thing that happened and investigate. I also dig into why I dropped waves in the first section of the game (assuming I dropped waves). I did like the stuff about 'root causes'. I've found that bad decisions come from anxiety or panicking quite often.

@@bryanglover757Then he should know the higher elo you are, a few mistakes will make or break a game, sure you can keep playing from behind hoping to capitalize on the enemy team making a game throwing mistake but it's gonna be harder and less often
