im starting to use lingq now to learn japanese, what im doing is, im goin into the lessons, and reading them for the first time, getting all the sentences with all the words that i dont know yet, and putting them in anki to review them, and after that, i review that, and then i start reading and listening. Any suggestions im open. thks

I have an Excel file with the unknown words i´ve found in the books i´ve read, and the videos i´ve seen, one column with the word, other column with the meaning in my native language and the type of word (noun, verb, adjective, adverb), other column with the exact example that i´ve found in the book or video (long sentence or a part of the paragraph), and the final column with examples from LINGUEE or another web dictionary. If i found another meaning or use of the word i register it in all the columns. I study those words in spaced repetition sessions

I learned a lot of vocab while learning Spanish but now I just listen and read a TON, and when I see a word I don’t know, I just look it up, repeat it about 8 times out loud, and I usually remember it next time I see/hear it. Great results and much more fun.

I like to look at things in my surroundings and say what they are called in Spanish (or think if I'm in public.) It's like live action flash cards.

I think that linkQ and your creator Steve Kaufman have save my life about how to learn English. Gracias totales.

I have never actually tried to memorize words I just read and read and eventually some words began to repeat and in the end they stick in my mind.

Same for me. Until particular moment I used flashcards and so on, but now I don’t spend time on such activities and I just read and listen and words gradually stick to my head

That makes no sense. How would they "stick in your mind" if you don't know the meaning? At some point you had to memorize the definition.

For the first 5 months of Japanese learning I was against anki but then I decided to do a pre-made N5 tango deck and realized I enjoy it because some of them are words that I hear during my podcast listening and so I enjoy it this way and I remember them more because I'm using both srs and podcast. But noted that this deck shows me the words in context sentences that are useful

The best way to "review" in my opinion is related to a video you did a number of weeks ago. Although I'll modify the suggestion there... Go back into the lesson. Sentence mode may be best. Skip through the sentences until you come to one with a yellow word. Do NOT click on it immediately. Try to derive the meaning from context. Look at the sentence preceding if needing more context. If you can't guess from context, only then click on the word for the meaning and/or the translate sentence button. This way you can quickly review and it's within meaningful context.

Superb, making use of effortful retrieval attempts as well as seeing words in contexts at the same time.

I agree that flashcards have limited value and studying them without a break is non productive. I try to include new words in flash cards with the new word 1st, followed by that word in a sentence, to give it context. I Luv LingQ!!

I always try to make a sentence of any new vocabulary when I encounter. Though it needs time to be used at a right place otherwise become less important. Thank You Steve

Do you stop to try to figure out the meaning of the sentence, trying to remember the meaning of any known words, before you take a look at the translation? I happen to think this is valuable. If the meaning is not immediately apparent to me, then I reread the sentence. Only when I’ve re-read the sentence at least once do I look up the individual words or phrases and only after that do I go into translation mode. There’s a certain discipline involved in the above process and it’s not as “easy” as going to the translation straight off, but it’ a certain form of vocabulary and grammar review in and of itself!

I mostly learn vocab by reading a lot. But I use Anki for words that are labled as "important" by Lingq (if I sort by "Importance"). They tend to be words with a higher frequency. I use Anki to kind of keep them in my mind and when I come across them in my reading, I notice that I know that word from anki and can most of the time add it to "known". But I dont use Anki with single words. I use it with a sentense (from my content), from wich I only dont understand that one word. This way its much easier to do the revwies. After some time, I delete the anki flashcard (mostly after it reached like 6 months - sometimes more sometimes less but maximum 1 year because if I didnt came across that word in my reading after 1 year, its probalby not very important). Anki is only a supplement to my learning and I do it max 20min a day, most of the time more like 5min when I'm waiting for the bus or something like that.

My approach when I use ANKI. I put some new words in a sentence on the front of the card and I explain the meaning on the back of the card. But you should explain the meaning in the same of that language you learn not in the language you know! This approach just is useful when your level in that language is intermediate and up-intermediate.

I use an app that uses a similar approach without the reading part. I am trying to learn Darija, Moroccan Arabic. The language is commonly spoken but very little is in writing. Written materials and newspapers, Tv etc. are in contemporary Arabic. Would love to have you talk about learning a non-written language.

Consistency and immersion.

I take a piece of paper and pull one word a page onto a list for the first chapter and i review it before and after every moment i read. When i haven’t finished the book and think i’m rdy for a new list i do the same for whatever chapter i’m on. For every word i make i end up seeing them in other books and movies. Sometimes i get so bored and tired of studying i don’t wanna do anything, i’ll lay in bed staring at them or translating music from spanish to english side by side.

I was in that situation, it took so much work every day and it felt kind pointless to learn them without context. Eventually you'll need to move on and realize that native speakers also don't review all their vocabulary and start reading and listening. Whatever works for you of course, just telling you from my own perspective/experience.

I had been applying the method of listening, reading, and typing the new words on a flashcards application without trying to scratch my mind by using any tough method of reviewing and I realized that It was working with me but when I came to remember those words without looking at them It was difficult for me to memorize them anyway I've come back again to use this method since a while 🙁

I think flashcards are very important for words that rarely appear in your text/audio, but want to remember. In Japanese, for me, maybe a word like 手数料, which is a word I want to remember when someone tells me there is a commission, but I use/hear/read rarely. That might be a bad example, but just first one in my head. 😂 But then, flashcards become a complete waste of time for any of the top 500 words (or even top 1000+?), or something you're seeing/hearing over and over. 何/なに or any words like that. This is also pretty individual. Like during the summer, I kept hearing 汗/あせ (sweat) over and over, so would have been useless as a flashcard. This depends on the area you live in, friends, colleagues, your personal reading/listening material, etc. For example, in Hokkaido you might not hear it so much and want to memorize it. Another example, is that I listen to a lot of spiritual stuff, so there are several spiritual words I never add to flashcards, since hear/read all the time.

Nice video thank you. I am at B2 level German, but I am not that good with remembering because of the fact that German has articles before words and words depend on proposition. Do you think it's to do think to do your method and build my own dictionary as I progress? What do you think. Let's say I learn 2 new lessons with 35 new words so I will create a list in Word and as time goes on the list will grow like a dictionary?

Good advice. I am learning myself spanish and german, when writing down the vocabulary for the same word, would you suggest that writing the spanish above and the german below it or use a separate paper for the languages?

How about reviewing with a target language-to-language dictionary?

I've had lots of success just reading and bumping into the word again and again throughout the book, but it just ends up sticking in my "passive" vocab sphere. I know the meaning and can recognize the word, but would I produce it spontaneously in other contexts? Probably not. The tedious memorización (Anki for example) does result in more active vocab. But it's very boring and I don't stick with it lol.

I must be an outlier. I have spent 75% of my time on Anki, adding sentences and words from Lingq readings (books, transcripts, etc). And I've created some that are "contrast cards" where I'll have maybe 3 or 4 very similar sounding words on one, to really hammer home the difference. Lots of unique things like that. I have 10,000+/- cards now, and have crammed 500+ reviews in a day when early on. No problem. Now because so many cards are complicated, 100 or so is 30 mins of work. I can't say what proportion of my learned ability has come from it, because it's intertwined with reading on Lingq. I can say that I do not learn much vocab reading....I don't see the words I don't know often enough for it them to stick.

And I'll add....what I DO learn from Lingq is sentence structure, colloquialisms, idioms. And I get a reinforcement of vocab I already know, in context.

Please can you tell me I have subscribed for a month on lingq, but I have a question, will the site automatically deduct my visa every month? Great! Your method of review sounds like " laissez faire, laissez passer".

I have a lot of vocabulary on google traslator but i can't memorise all of them i just reviewing some of them, ya don't try to remember all of them our brain has limit.😊

To me, manually grading how well I know a word, feels like wasted time: Perhaps I know the word well at the time of grading, but I might then gradually forget the word, if do not encounter it frequently. I instead prefer that Lingq from time to time makes me review old words. So that is the way I have configured my Lingq profile.

I've noticed the speaking feature in some of your videos, but I don't see it when I am using LingQ, but would like to. I'm studying Bulgarian, it is limited to certain languages?

I’m confused when the letters change sounds such as Russian “е” sometimes it sounds like ye as in yes, sometimes it seems like it sounds like Russian “э” and sometimes Russian “и”

I've never tried learning Russian...yet, but youtube actually has a lot of good beginner videos. I'd just search for Russian alphabet or Russian beginner.

just like English "a" in "tall", "part" and "about", right? Or "e" in "ever" and "believe". Do you know the rule why in one case it sounds like "a", in second like "ii", and in third like nothing? Google translate is good if not the best. Alphabet studying isn't much effective when you have someone who can read (pretty much like a native, any time, for free) properly for you to remember. Subconscious'd grab the common patterns someday, I believe, after a lot of input.

I'm not getting to use this feature (Match Pairs), don't appear for me, can anyone help me?

"Known words" include words that you didn't look up, didn't save as a LingQ, didn't advance in status to "known". These are words that you already knew or were able to infer from words you knew. Learned words are words that you discover on LingQ and gradually, because you see them in different contexts, come to know. Known words number is larger because it includes the learned words and the ones you didn't need to learn on LingQ.

I can't review any flashcard or words because lingq doesn't show it to me... every time I try to review lingq show that there is no words to review.lingq says it's 0 words to review I don't know what to do it's so frustrating.

I find it very hard to figure how to work with limited vocabulary given in a free version of lingQ. I fact, I wasn’t able to save and review even 10 words. I do look for useful app & ready to pay reasonable price but I will not buy something I can’t work with in a free version. Would appreciate more help, because the features shown in this video simply do not work or do not exist in a free version

I am afraid I strongly disagree with you Steve here, paused the video at 5:39 because what you had said just there directly contradicts today's well-known findings in memory science, the idea that it is actually EFFORTFUL retrieval of memories that is most effective for their consolidation. Saying that reviewing should ideally take as little effort as possible directly goes against that.

I agree with you, it makes total sense. I think what he meant was a 'less is more' approach, instead of reviewing 100 words just review 10 words and try to fully acquire those words, to make them stick.

Hello Is learning Swedish wasting of time while most of the people there are fluent in English 🗣 ?!

In hebrew I find that listening to the vidéos is great, but listening to the words ,obviously from a "google" person ,is terrible,artificial and most of the time wrong. That makes revising vocab difficult,especially dictation. And it is often misleading
