I passed my exam today in California. You are an excellent instructor Rick. I was most concerned about two specific things: reversing along a curb and shoulder checking(I usually forget to do it). I watched your videos on reversing and shoulder checking and felt so confident during the test. I was remembering all the time what you always repeat: “mirror, signal, shoulder check”. I got a perfect score on reversing and shoulder checking which were my weaknesses.😊 Everybody should watch your videos. I will always recommend them. You are the best instructor in KZread.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 God bless you. Thanks for everything you do to educate us all. You definitely save many lives every day through your educational videos.🙏🏼 Thank you Rick.🙏🏼

I have my driving test in a little over an hour I have at least 100 hours of driving practice in and I know how to back out of driveways, which usually requires a 2 or 3 point turn depending on how many cars are parked in the street but no one ever taught me how to straight line back on it’s own. But after seeing this video I’m confident I can do it. I’ve been doing this for a while whenever I hit dead ends and had no idea! Thanks!

I really enjoy your Vids Rick. It helps me learn to get idees. I have been driving my car over a year without a licence and permit expired a few times. I have had licenced drivers with me but they did not know new road rules. Just rescently I had taken a behind the wheel test ..I had failed the 100 ft back up a few times....was docked 4 points due to drifting out of the street or going over the curb. I failed on my fifth point when I didnt look over my shoulder. I cried and lost confidence. I had to retake the test again. This time failed and was docked all 5 points for the 100ft back up Which I passed on the last test. I cant understand for the life of me why California law requires this maneuver since drivers do not always use it on roadways. And I sure dont live in a residentual zone where there is a concrete curb, just a country gravel road. I drive very well and practice the 100ft back up when I can find a good location. One day I tried it in my jobs parking lot. Boy, did that go wrong! I backed up, about 50ft. I slightly hit a island in the driveway. Dont doubt that Its either my alignment to my car is off, or I just cant seem to get the back up correctly do to turning the steering wheel without knowing it. Such an easy thing to do, and I cant seem to reverse straight. Its highly frusterating!. But im also trying to catch on to my mistake and pin point what im doing wrong. I do have to say, here in California, instructors are strict but not all of them all alike. Not sure if its required to turn your flashers on while backing, or taking your seat belt off. But instructors do not explain them during the test. Just those little rookie mistakes I keep making cost me to have to repay fees for a whole new permit. I wonder if anyone besides me have these similar issues because I need some input and need to build confidence. Thanks-

Hi Tonya Hall - Thank you for your comment and story. I would suggest that rather than focusing on this manoeuvre and the problems that you're having here, do the exercises in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ln6kr62kp6jOqKw.html You need to learn where your vehicle is in space and place because I believe that is the problem you're having when backing up along the curb. And the reason you have to do this manoeuvre is to demonstrate to the examiner that you have due care and control of the vehicle in changing traffic conditions. DO put your 4-way flashers on; DON'T take your seatbelt off. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

Dear@@smartdrivetest : thank you very much for your kind response Rick. Maybe helpful to other viewers that the inside rear view mirror also presents a hazard, it hangs so low that in my current car(2014 Toyota Yaris) is able to hide an ENTIRE transit bus on the right in a four way stop! Furthermore the driver seat headrest even at its lowest setting makes turning the upper torso for reverse maneuver pointless as it blocks the whole view and I am only 5"7. Do find a fresnel lens(size of a letter size paper) very helpful for the rear window. Also have those stick-on convex mirror on both external rear view mirrors too.

Hello Rick, I have my road test in the 30th of this month and I am still having trouble staying straight with the straight line backing. Now the car I'm using to take my road test is a car from my driving instructor which is a Scion XB. I'm having trouble looking for a reference point out of the back window to stay straight because according to my instructor I am not allowed to look out of my side mirrors and have to keep focus on the rear window when slowly backing. If you could please help me out with finding a good reference point in the back window other than the windshield wiper which in this case can not help me I would greatly appreciate it. I’ve been told to have both of my hands on the wheel at all times so i feel conflicted on what would be best for me to reverse, does that pertain to reversing? I just get caught up in the literacy on what the book is saying I’m so dependent on looking into my right side mirror. I mean it would make sense to look back and look at side mirrors while reversing …and I shouldn’t get marked for it ? 🤦🏻‍♀️🤔 “look through the back windshield instead of relying on the rearview and/or side mirrors, or camera, which may not show all hazards. This will help you back up in a straight line.”

@@smartdrivetest I'm not sure about the new tests. I've been a driver for many years. Experienced drivers should be able to drive backward through a tight drive-thru lane. Years ago, on the test day I probably started with the side mirror slightly angled 😂 (like halfway). The other trick is to start by lining up to an already parked car and try to maintain your alignment 😉
