    I did shortly answer this at the end of this video, but it might be a good idea for a future video, too. I've compared priming cardboard with gesso and white paint for acrylic and oil paintings and in the case of the oil painting, there was actually a big difference in how the finished painting looked.

    I had already gessoed and sanded my canvas to prep it and then used what I thought was graphite transfer paper on top. It smudged everywhere and ruined the drawing and i cannot erase it bc the transfer paper might be carbon. Would the acrylic gesso still be fine to apply over it since the transfer paper might have oil in it?

  • @IvyLilyCreative

    @IvyLilyCreative

    2 жыл бұрын

    I haven't used carbon paper, but I found that you might be able to remove carbon smudges with a kneaded eraser. I don't know if this helps, but when I've painted over a charcoal sketch with acrylics, I've used clear matte medium and fixative to seal in the sketch first, so it doesn't smudge the paints.

  • @IvyLilyCreative

    I haven't reused varnished canvases, but from some googling, it might depend on the type of varnish. Maybe you can paint straight over it or maybe you need to sand it a little first. And if all else fails, remove the varnish if it's removable.

    I was looking to find how to save a canvas . I figured that gesso would be the fix . But with the price of $ 17 dollars for 2 canvas compared to 8 oz of gesso at $ 16 I figured I would be better off buying new canvas . I really need to buy panels in bargain packs to practice on and for studies . My big mistakes are how far up or down my trees and sky's will look right . I have no problem with subjects like puppies and people . But I need more practice with landscapes depth .

    I have a video on comparing priming with gesso and white oil paint (kzread.info/dash/bejne/q31ktKypobq3m6w.html ), but it's about painting on cardboard, not on canvas. If you're painting with oils over an acrylic painting, using white oil paint should be fine. If you're painting with oils over another oil painting, it's probably still fine, but there's a risk that the new painting will crack.

    It really depends on how much you're going to use it. If you're making one painting, it's cheaper to buy a new canvas. If you're planning to paint a lot and you have cardboard or other free stuff to paint on, but it just needs to be primed, priming it yourself will be cheaper.

    @@lrdalucardart Well, it depends. I bought this gesso years ago in 2016 and I've been using it on multiple art and craft projects over the years (painting on cardboard and plastic, for example) and it's not running out. I've even found free canvases (already painted on) at the recycling center that I can just prime and use myself very cheaply. New canvases, on the other hand, can be expensive where I live (I do buy them, if I can get them discounted, though). So, priming a used canvas is definitely cheaper for me. By priming it yourself, you can also make the canvas texture smoother (if you also sand it), if you prefer a smoother canvas. However, if you have access to cheap canvases or don't want to use the time priming them (I estimate this one took me 30 min to prime, not counting the drying times) and don't care about the recycling aspect (vs. buying a new one), then buying new ones is probably better for you. It also depends on the size of the canvas, though. I usually work on quite small surfaces and I wouldn't bother doing this on a very big canvas.

  • @lrdalucardart

    @lrdalucardart

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@IvyLilyCreative I see, I was wondering, cause my friend has this huge canvas, but when he try to reuse it, he probably didn't used the right paints/gesso for the job, so that old drawing still shows beneath the new layer he drew opon. Also I dont know of this counts as cheap, but here(in germany) I can get one canvas for around 2-3€each(packs usually dont get THAT much lower but r avaible). Would that be considered chapear(About the size of the one in the video or slightly bigger)? Or are there canvas of a better quality that we should aim for instead? Also thx for the sandpaper tip. Didn't knew it couls make that much of a diference.

  • @IvyLilyCreative

    @IvyLilyCreative

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@lrdalucardart I might make a video trying to actually calculate how much it costs to prime a canvas/cardboard of some common size and compare that to the price of a new canvas. The quality of the canvas depends on what you prefer. I've only ever bought cheap canvases and the texture usually shows through in the painting and I don't really like that. If it bothers you, you can try smoothing down a new canvas with sanding and priming or buy a more expensive smooth canvas or use wood panels instead.

I bought a bottle of gesso years ago and I've used it to prime a lot of free surfaces (like cardboard) for painting. I've never had to re-purchase gesso (depends on how big your paintings are, of course), so it's been so much cheaper than buying a new canvas for each painting.
