How To Rescue A Dying Basil Plant - Two Methods

Don't Throw Away That Old Basil Plant! Basil is a universally-loved herb. Its easy to grow from seed and readily germinates at room temperature and grows indoors. However, your Basil plant can easily start to fail due to weather damage, wind burn, drying out, over harvesting, over watering, and even from becoming pot bound.
In this video I show you two different potting methods to save your dying Basil and put it back on track for maximum growth for the rest of the year. Its faster than starting a new batch from seeds, and you'll once again be swimming in Basil leaves soon enough!

Thanks Jeff as always your advice is great. Any garden question I have you always have the answer. Grew some basil earlier and it was successful. Now the weather has become much colder the basil doesn't like the walk-in greenhouse anymore. So this advice is great, I will repot them and try them in the cold frame I have insulated it to make a warmer and it receives good light so I will see what happens.

I used a similar technique as the second one with 47p worth of basil I bought from Lidl, a supermarket in the UK. I got 23 healthy plants from it, and have been cropping all summer. Most have started to look a bit sad now, September, so I harvested most and dehydrated the leaves for winter use. I've kept 3 basil plants in large containers, fingers crossed they survive the winter (in a greenhouse)

Great tips. I grow basil in pots from seed indoors. Not all my plants made it. After watching your video I knew exactly what I was doing wrong. My little basil seedlings are now outdoor in my garden, doing much better after I have divided them. It seems that if we don’t divide the plants, change the soil and fertilize properly, they won’t make it. Thanks for the great tips 👍🌱😊

Yessss Giuliana, that's exactly it! For some reason, they just "use up" their pots. Its crazy because they don't appear to be root bound or anything....But sure enough, get the plants some more space and into more new soil and they just bounce back, every time! And faster than starting a new batch of seeds!

Very easy to cut back. Always make sure to leave at least 2 nodes (axis where leaves pop out) on every shoot. Basil will pop back like crazy. Actually, be warned about that....whenever you prune, it'll come back even thicker.

Thanks so much! I learned a lot about rescuing basil. I learned a lot about the basil root system. I brought 2 basil plants home from Trader Joe’s and they promptly “fainted.” I’m wondering if they are root bound? I keep watering them. Some sort of shock? I will check your soil mix. My friend brought me garden soil instead of potting soil. I hope that’s ok, as I’m not going into stores.

The Ripe Tomato Farms thanks! I took one of them out of the pot. Very rootbound! AND the insects are beginning to eat them. I took them out of the sun and flowerbed. Put them in the shaded patio. I don’t have time to split and repot today. Boy, your video came at the right time! So They are sitting in water for two hours. One of them is starting to perk up! If the other one doesn’t perk up, I will harvest that one for pesto and split the better one.

I bought some at Fred Meyer, after the ones I got last year were so abundant that I had to give it away in bouquets. This year, the leaves didn’t wilt but turned brown from the ground up. (Well drained and in the same kind of soil with nutrients already added.) Something wrong with the plants? Or bugs? (I grew up on a farm and had my own vegetable patch at age 5. I’ve never seen anything like this.)

Interesting, but I'd need that sort of thing more for Coriander, Rosemary, and Sage. Also, aren't most types of Basil annual, like Coriander? PS: my Coriander has too weak stems to grow up and tends to break on its own weight and my Rosemary doesn't want to recover from my pruning (for food use). The worst was Sage. It is very vulnerable to mildew, and once the earth gets too dry, I have to soak it, then it dies of rot...

Just curious, how are your onion root cuttings doing? Mine unfortunately died, (as did the beet root tops I told you about, but some of them took a lot longer - the last one this week.) I'm wondering if it is because I put them both into pots with potting soil? I chose to do that so that I could keep them on the edge of my porch, where they would get more immediate attention, like more even watering. (Desert climate, and all.)

Few casualties here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary. I do know that the Onions we grow here do not like big increases in temperature quickly....they really respond negatively to that.

I have a problem with my basil: I bought a basil plant in the supermarket and I started to give it enough water everytime. After it started to have more and more yellow leaves, I moved the plant to a bigger pot. I did this twice. But the current pot is one that barely fits in my Windowsill. The plant grew absolutely huge in a no time in that pot. And now I have been struggling for a while to keep the plant healthy since it yet again outgrew its own pot. It started to lose a lot of leaves and it just doesn't stop blossoming. Every time I cut off a branch with blossoms, it gets a new one. Right now I literally cut off half the size of the plant and it does okayish now. But I don't expect the plant to do this will for long since the roots are still coming out of the drainage holes. I can't move the plant to a bigger pot because that won't fit in my windowsill, and I can't put it into my garden because I live in the Netherlands and the plant probably won't like the climate here. What solution do you have?

go around the plant once it has grown say 4-5 layers of leaves (vertically, going up the stem) and cut the top layer or two of leaves to eat by snipping the stem, the plant now grows back from that point with DOUBLE the number of leaves and you can keep doing this after it regenerates and make your basil very bushy.
