How to Replace Valve Cover Gasket on a BMW N20 4 Cylinder (BMW X1 2011-2015 DIY E84)

Ғылым және технология

In this video I will show how to replace the valve cover on a BMW N20 engine. The car on the video is BMW X1 xDrive28i 2015 (E84). This engine is used in a wide range of BMW models. See the full list of models and years here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N20.
I've used URO aftermarket valve cover, which is second best after the OEM (and it's half the price): amzn.to/3sqdQxM
You can also buy the OEM valve cover: amzn.to/3xAII0Y
Special tools I used:
1. Mini Ratchet with bits amzn.to/3w2JEuE
2. E-Torx sockets and Torx bits set amzn.to/3lROAhm
3. Torque Angle Meter amzn.to/3cnTQGh
4. Wiper Arm Puller amzn.to/3fggoL5
5. Telescopic Magnet amzn.to/3fgnVJK
6. Torque Wrench amzn.to/3d64SPQ
7. Mechanics Tool Set amzn.to/39fs90x
8. Work Light I use amzn.to/2P701G1
Please replace the whole cover and not just the gaskets. If you are going to reuse your old cover, replace all gaskets on the cover, not just the main gasket.

Very professional! Your list of tools to purchase from Amazon is an added bonus to your step-by-step instruction guide. I have watched many videos on how to fix different things, but this one is the best I have seen. You not only showed step by step on how to remove the valve cover but also how to replace as well. Many thanks, I saved my daughter $1400.00 by not going to the BMW dealership. I found a URO brand valve cover "which is a recommended brand to use" from Amazon for 179.00, ten hours later from start to finish, and the job is complete. I could not have done it without your help. Thanks again, and may God bless you!

Thank you! I am glad it worked for you. Reviews like yours keep me going. And I do think that BMW makes it too hard to maintain their cars and their maintenance costs are outrageous. Congrats on saving $1400.

This video was very useful. It save me $2000 from BMW. I was able to replaced my wife's Volve cover from her X1 2015 model with no issues although it took me two saturdays(Was waiting on the valve cover to come) The tools on the link was very accurate and without them I couldn't do the job. Thank you very much for putting this video together.

Great video, thank a lot, I couldnt find the ratchet for the vacuum pump removal but I used a 1/4 wrench intead, that was the hardest part, just need to be careful to not to drop the torx.

Outstanding job. Looks like slow and steady is the way to go. I might get some paint pens to mark things….old guys can’t remember where it all goes sometimes. I’ve heard others say you have to rotate engine to BDC before installing HPFP? But it seems to go right back in for you. Thanks again for making such a great video.

Thank you Igor! I'm in the middle of this process right now on my 2014 e84 and it's difficult, but your video has been a great help! By the way, do you have any advice about detaching wiring clips without breaking them? I've really been struggling with pulling the clips with the small metal teeth off of the various mount points, even with a screwdriver and pliers. I've broken a few clip mounts in the process... You make it look so easy that I think I must be missing something.

I did it without taking off the wipers or wiper cowl. It's doable, but it was pretty hard to take the valve cover out and the vacuum pump out.

I changed the valve cover gasket thinking that it would solve my oil leak that fell on top of the exhaust pipe and smelled a lot of oil. But that is not the case, the oil loss has decreased but it remains the same, I think I have to change the valve cover, they say it may be bent... Is this true? Thank you!

Hello, I have a 2014 X1 281i and the directions fit well. Thanks. I cranked it up on the 2nd try and it went well. The next day it took 15 cranks to start up and today it will not start at all. Any thoughts? Do I have to reset anything? Codes came up Valvetronic servomotor - short circuit or disconnection and mixture fuel-air control - too lean
