Thanks for this video. I needed to get the transmission belt off rather than the pulley but the pulley had to come off to do it. I spent 3 hours and a lot of sweat and tears trying to refit it all when I saw this video and the tip to remove the idler pulley tension spring - common sense really but I had lost all mine by then! Anyway, back together and running in less than 15 minutes after watching this. By the way, mine is an MTD but mechanics are the same. Thanks once again and remember that if you get stuck with a similar problem, there is usually a video here somewhere that can help.

It would have been useful if you had mentioned the typical symptoms of a pulley that is faulty. Half the problem here is diagnosing what’s wrong

I only wish you had a repair video specifically for replacing the variable speed pulley. This was a good video though it may get me there.

You make it look easy, but try that on a 5 or 6 year old machine. how about showing us how the pro's would remove a rusted on pulley! Please, no kidding, need to remove two right now. thanks

I replaced all three of my belts. But now the drive belt is not tight enough, my guess. When I try to go forward or reverse the mower will start to move but then stop. How do I go about tightening my drive belt? My poor yard needs mowed badly. Haha

Could someone help me? I replaced the transmission pulley and hub, I took the seat off to get leverage when pushing the 'snap ring' back in (was under the pulley, not sure I had to remove it in the first place) anyways, the electrical connection on the left side (with the bracket and spring) I believe part of the bracket is supossed to touch and release from the connections where the wires are (safety feature?) Well it keeps popping out and the mower starts just fine but stalls out when I put it in reverse...

Hi Allison, thank you for your question. You may want to contact the manufacturer of your lawn tractor and see if they can send you a wiring diagram of your unit. While you are speaking to them, you could ask them about the specific problem you are having. Sorry we couldn't be of more help. Good luck with your repair!

When you say if feels like a belt is slipping, are you noticing it when your in gear and moving or is it noticeable only when the blades are engaged? You may have a faulty transmission or a belt idler that's not keeping the correct tension on the belts. These are typically a really dependable mower and your mower doesn't sound very old so I'd rather think there's something out of adjustment.

How do you remove the gold but from the transmission pulley? It's put on from the company by an impact and I can't get the leverage with a 7/8 hand wrench to remove it!! It's on there!

+Allen Davis (DAVISENTERPRIZE) This is a "Right Handed" nut. Some of these are hard to get lose. An impact wrench is about the best solution for these. Make sure it is in the Reverse Position.
