Watch me swapping out the power plug in my Riccar Rl-320 Overlock Serging machine to a Kenmore plug just because I can.

You should do more videos, more helpful than anyone else on the internet

Hi Stevie and Crystal. Thank you for your amazing vids and instruction! Not sure if it's just me, but it seems the audio isn't in sync with the video on this one. I was still able to try and follow but just thought I would mention it as it seems nobody else did. Anyway, I have just bought my first vintage machine, a Kenmore 158.904. I bought it before I knew much about vintage machines, and initially just wanted something that worked. Anyway, my issue is that at some point the motor was replaced with a generic motor that was too big for the area where the motor was so it looks like they just removed the plug receptacle that was in the way and twisted the motor wires together to the light, foot pedal and electric plug wires. It looks pretty sketchy and in the least, I need to replace the old wires and solder and shrink wrap the wires and probably replace the foot pedal which is an old rheostat with coils (the porcelain is cracked in two places). That said, after watching this video about wiring up a machine with a different plug, I'm wondering if I can just add a different Kenmore receptacle plug to my machine, one that is perhaps an upgrade from the original three-prong receptacle that was on the original machine. What are the rules about what plugs/ foot pedals can be replaced/ used on what machines? Is it compatibility of voltages to the motor or something else I need to make sure of? Also, if pictures are helpful in answering this, I can send them to your FB, I just posted here as it was relevant to the video and may help someone else. Thank you in advance for any help/ advice! Sorry this is so long!

You might be Right Ill have to rewatch it. Its not on the raw video and the edit but I usally dont watch them a 3rd time on youtube thanks for the heads up. As far as swapping connectors and what nots on machines it can be tricky but all vintage machines for the most part share common things. Two wires to the rheostat pedal, Common, and Hot. Long as the connector has that and the one your replacing it with is the same then there really is no rule long as you can mount and safely wire it. My Riccars were 3 prong connectors and so are kenmores. Far as voltage not a huge consern there almost all connectors are rated for way higher voltages then youll ever use. And amperage there rated way higher was well. The kenmore connector is half the size of the ones I swapped out on in this machine but is still rated for 600v and 10 amps the machine is 120v and 1.2 amps so its safe to use it. Main reason why I did this is all my portable machines are kenmores and I really like the kenmore foot pedal best. I didnt want 10 different types of connectors and pedals I have one type of pedal that fits all my machines.

I wish you were doing more of these. I have a Necchi Supernova I inherited from my mother and I want to make a few alterations and...just am trying to chunk the knowledge needed into my head. I want to replace the broken switches, for instance, I have obtained replacements which should be compatible but... what are the steps I need to follow? Photo everything? Work bit by bit? Solder? Leap in? It's metal Julia switches which should work for a supernova. The original resin switches are broken off but do turn over with a bit of pain or a penny and are a good 50 to 68 years old, How do I rewire? The machine still works even though my sewing-inept Mother and Sister produced a remakable pile of snarled thread out of it at times. Oh, so many questions and no-one to ask.

They use industrial needles. Bl x 1 is the needle type the book calls for. Its been a while since ive swapped but im like 80 percent sure I stuff 16x257 "DB x 1" needles in it as there pretty much the same except the eyelet hole if I recall and ive never had any issues. But the Book does call for a BL x 1 Needle type.
