Absolutely fantastic work! After taking my brushes off, I'd already taken my potential expense down from 200 quid for a new motor to around 20 for 2 brushes, then realised 1 brush was still fine so reduced it to around 9. Then, after playing around with the faulty brush while I was looking for the right replacement, the carbon popped right back out again, it had just been jammed up by dust! Rebuilt & works like normal again. Saved me a minimum of 10 quid, but possibly up to a few hundred if I'd not been a bit technical (and if I'm honest, the only really hard bit of the whole process was moving the washing machine around while it was still full of water!).

Excellent video. Just in process of replacing the bushes on mine. I had trouble getting the motor off its mount. I ended up using a pri-bar with a metal washer between the plastic and the pri-bar to protect the plastic. As the motor moved a little I used two washers to close the gap to make it more effective. Also a good idea to clean the commutator before fitting the brushes. Regards Stephen

Thank you for your excellent and clear video. It has helped me locate and diagnose the worn brushes in my Hoover Dynamic DYN 8164 D. I did this during my stressed out lunch break, but your calm and clear instructions kept me cool headed! I would like to add one thing, if you check one of the brushes and find that there is still a good length of carbon rod, don’t assume that the other rod won’t be worn out. The ones in my machine were unequally worn and I almost replaced the one I examined without checking the other. A good selection of replacement brushes on the internet. Thanks for saving me the expense of a washing machine engineer.

This worked for me. Amazing how similar your machine was to mine. There was no way I could pull the motor out so I had to put the machine on its face and pull it out from below -- that was easy to do. Also yellow cable attached to the front of the motor did not come off easily and had to be pried off because it had a little catch on it -- no little wiggle would have removed that. These tiny hitches did not prevent me from getting the job done in less than an hour. And it was fun. And, of course, the pleasure that came when the machine started up again was considerable.

Excellent video. I took out the motor and took off my brushes only to find they were about half the size but not fully worn out! Absolutely gutted. If it wasnt the brushes that caused E08 i didnt know what to do next! I gave the motor a blow to get all the carbon bits off before putting it all back together. Thought id give machine one more try and holy moses it works! There must have been something going on with the brushes and taking them off blowing the motor and putting them back must have cleared debris which was breaking the connection perhaps? Either way THANK YOU. it really does make you feel good when fixing something mechanical!

Just wanted to say thank you. Informative video, but I did have to watch on 2x speed. Looks like one brush was just ok, the other is spent though, now lets wait for the new ones to arrive and hope this fixes it. Only difference between our models was the connectors to the brushes had a retaining clip function that needed triggering before they would come free. Almost snapped the blighters off until I noticed.

Good video. just to add for anyone viewing this, that commutator should be copper colour. If you are removing the carbon brushes then clean that carbon brush staining off with a scouring pad, otherwise you no longer have a consecutive connection with the carbon brushes! If you have large lengths left on the carbon bruises it will still work with a dirty commutator due to the pressing effect, however, in this video, those carbon brushes had no such force left due to their worn size. They would probably still have worked with a clean commutator. That said, they needed replacing anyway so great job, but it's good to know to clean the commutator to get you through until the new brushes arrive, Hope this helps.

No! I don't think so. On closer inspection my brushes were identical. My machine is less than a year old. I used a pair of pliers to gently pull the brushes slightly out of their housing. They are spring loaded. I found that they were sticking along their length. I used a knife and some very smooth emery paper to scrape and smooth the excess carbon away and then wipe them clean with some turpentine. I also took the opportunity to clean the commutator with my thumb pressed on the smooth emery paper as I turned the shaft until I could see the copper. Thank for the video as I can hear my clothes being spun at this very moment.
