Great video. Had a run in with a fallen tree on a dark winter morning. Cracked the case but wing mirror intact (luckily!). This vid helped me repair the damage without having my eyes removed by a dealer 😄. Clips were a nightmare for me but you made it look so easy. Just need to be careful as if you force the wing mirror to far back you can apparently damage the motor.

So thankful that I found your video!!! I had to replace a scratched cap on my 2019 CX-5 and this process is still relevant. The only thing that was different was the last clip that sticks outward was on the inside of the side mirror, instead of the bottom on your Mazda 3.

Thanks for this video. I took my BN 3 back to the dealership to have their "mechanics" change the motor in the drivers door mirror, and they broke just about every clip in there. You could see the marks that the screwdriver left as they tried to pry the cap off the body. They didn't tell me about this damage. I checked the mirror by trying to twist the cap when I arrived home and it just about fell off in my hand. I showed them the damage and they then replaced the cap and body at their expense. The things I recorded on my dashcam at that dealership, that's another story but I won't be going back there. I wish they had watched your video. Thanks again.

Thanks Greg, this was helpful for me to repair my passenger mirror on my CX-5 which was broken. It has blind spot monitoring and heating. Unexpectedly, once underway with the the mirror glass replacement, I found one of the servo-motors was apparently jammed as well, which necessitated the removal of the mirror cap so I could access the the wiring to the servo-motors and remove the servo-motor component and then disassemble it completely down to the servo-motors and gears. I found Mazda's CX-5 repair instructions online for the mirror removal and re-install which were barely helpful, but they were the only guide I could find on my car's specific condition, and I had nothing for the mechanism. It was frustrating to accomplish, since I haven't much experience doing autobody work, but your guidance on at least the cap removal part of it was very helpful. Happily my mirror is fixed and operational including mirror adjustment, blind spot, signal etc. If anybody else needs mirror help on their CX-5 (and I bet other Mazda's have this similar fancy mirror design), let me know; I can share some of my experience.

Thanks for this great tutorial. I actually had a vibrating mirror issue. I was so worried to try it myself. Your video gave me the courage. I just added double-sided foam tape to the spots on the mirror bracket that had no adhesive. No more vibration = a $700 savings. That’s was the quiet for a whole new mirror & labor. Thanks🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊

Thank you. I had problems getting the mirror to pop on to the actuator servos. It really helps seeing the inside. I only had to replace the mirror. Seeing how to pop out the old mirror with the broken glass was very helpful. The new mirror came with the white 4 inch circular mounting base (that pops into the center and the 2 servos of the actuator) separate from the mirror - the idea is it is easier to pop this mounting piece on first and then use the double sided adhesive to attach the mirror to it afterward than with the base and mirror together as in your video. My roadblock was that the mounting piece refused to snap on to the balls on the servo pieces. If I tried with them spun out a little, when I tried to pop the socket onto the ball, it just forced it down to the bottom position. At the bottom position, the ball and the socket in the mounting base weren't aligned well enough. I used LOTS of force - enough that I was really worried about breaking it. The center popped in with some force, but the 2 servos for adjusting the mirror angle just would not go in. After trying a variety of things, I made a collar out of a 1.5" washer that choked the neck of the ball on the servo. I used a 1/4" piece of 1/2" pvc irrigation pipe to support this collar (I cut it through on one side and most of the way through on the other side so I could get it out afterward.) So when I pushed the base (with the socket) against the ball, the pipe and collar kept the servo from retracting. And the force was against the case and not the servo. Still required a lot of force, but it did pop in. photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipM1VdxC-9XLeQEk1vhgkx-rbDnoKJJjKGOB7IF0

watched many videos before I found this one, which is far and away the best one. To avoid oncoming traffic, I swerved and hit a trash bin, which folded the side mirror with a loud bang ( scared the whee out of me) after snapping it back in place, no physical damage, just the actual mirror flapping in the breeze. This video shoed how and where to guide it back in, now working perfectly... Thanks Greg

My mirror and electronics still work fine; the mirror I have has blind spot detection but all the ones I see for sale don't have it. Can I simply buy the replacement mirror and just change out the shell and keep my mirror and electronics? Perhaps you can make a video showing us how to do that. I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Outer Shell? Like the frame? mmmm Should be ok to do. going to take a little bit of work, but I dont see why you couldnt replace the shell. looks like everything on the inside had a screw and/or clip holding it in. Not exactly sure how to do that... cuz I havent had the need to. I would for sure ask the forums if anyone has done any of this work. I would use the original one as a reference how to wire the blind spot into the new shell.

I just took a look and it seems as though the wires all come through the spring that allows you to push the mirror back. Do you supposed the mirror glass itself is the only difference between the models with other electronic features (blind spot, heated etc..)? Thanks for the quick response.

Does anyone know if the 2014 CX-5 mirrors are the same as any other Mazda models. Are they interchangeable with other vehicles? Mine have BSM and I cracked the housing on my garage door so I need to change the frame but the cover is still intact. Just hoping I can find one for a somewhat cheap price is they are interchangeable with other Mazda’s.

Thanks for that, one extra tip for people is you use a heat gun to warm the ball on the mirror and the socket. Just warm not hot so the plastic is more flexible.

  • @jeffwatson2915

That's my issue... The main one pops on with some force, but the 2 servos refuse to snap in place. Pressing harder just forces them to their fully retracted position and then the angle isn't right for the ball to go into the socket on the back of the mirror. I have tried holding the white plastic rod (about the size of a chapstick tube) with tape wrapped around it and with hose clamps and no luck so far. Reeaalllly don't want to break the ball off and have to replace that whole unit. --- Later, I was a little nervous about heating and I went a different route. So I made a separate comment.

When looking at the back of the mirror there's (3) spots where wires get plugged in. Do you know what the (2) wires closest to the body are for? I had to replace the whole mirror housing and the new housing I ordered online did not come with them. I put the mirror and housing back on the car and the blind spot monitor, blinker, and power mirror all still worked. I'm thinking its for the heated mirror feature but I do not know. Great video btw helped me finish the job and get my mirror back on. Was nervous to apply that much pressure to it.

If I had to guess they wired all the mirrors for heat then left a blank @ where the button goes on the center controls so you have to pay for that upgrade and it's easy for them. Install the button and turn on the feature in the cars computer. After looking at mine it looks like the blank is next the the driver side heated seat button. I have a 2016 Mazda CX-5 so it could be a little different in yours but should basically be the same.

Those wires are for the mirror heater, I just had the opposite problem where I ordered new glass and didn't know I had heated mirrors so the new one did not have those terminals! They are activated with the rear defrost on my 5.

The wire end with the white tip is for the blind spot monitor, the two black wires are for the heated mirrors (if you have them or else the tabs will be missing), they can be hand removed if your careful.

I am having an absolute nightmare with the wing mirror glass. Initially, i took the mirror off as my mirror casing was broken and i was getting a bodyworker to repair it, when i took the original mirror casing off, the rear of the mirror glass retaining clips broke. A couple of days later, the bodyworker finished with the car, and suggested glueing the old mirror back in, he did and insisted it would still swivel, i didnt see how and was proven right, it failed to move. So now im stuck with a wing mirror glued on, so i had no choice but to break the glass and remove the glue, but he used some industrial level glue, which i tried to remove from the actuator but it was too stubborn and too far gone. So now i needed a new actuator (the part with the little motors and swiveling knobs), dealers dont sell it separately, so i needed a new mirror casing just for that particularly part. I sourced a complete mirror casing, came without a mirror glass. So i bought a non original mirror glass, attempted to fit it in, the internal centre retaining clip on the rear of the mirror glass broke, whilst pushing it into position. I then thought oh it must be poor plastic, so i went ahead and bought an original mirror glass, i managed to push the centre in, but when i attempted to push the two swivel knobs in, the clips on the rear of the mirror glass for them broke. This mirror has drove me absolutely insane. I am now stuck, i do not know what to do, i wish i bought a complete mirror with the glass already in it and just be done with it. I know this write up is long, im just venting. I want to cry.
