How to replace sealed-beam headlights
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Here is my detailed procedure for replacing an old-school sealed-beam headlight on my 1995 Toyota Tacoma. This type of bulb is found on older cars prior to when auto manufacturers switched to more modern designs. Why pay someone else to do it when you can easily do it yourself?

Thanks for the kind comments. I really appreciate it!
Excellent video! Just a couple things noticed on my '96 taco Lower middle grill also has a retaining clip. Dealer ordered all the OEM clips and one more thing, recommend snug tight the screws. Thanks again!
Thank you for this video! All the other KZread videos I found covered the 2wd model, not the 4wd one. This was exactly what I needed to know how to remove the grille.
Thanks a bunch on this video!! I used to change all my sealed beam head lamps on the two previous toyota trucks (sooo easy)! BUT the Toyota makers in '95 decided to mess the easy peesy headlight replacement with something requiring a little insider knowledge so I took it in to have them replaced by mechanics! WOW! BAD move financially. The going rate was (and going higher) = 300 plus bucks. So this last time, was in fact THE LAST TIME I'm doing that. But, they replaced those side screws with hex nut/bolt stuff cus the idiot that replaced the bulbs, yanked off the grill instead of unscrewing two stinking bolts and tried to get away with NOT telling me (thinking I'm not going to NOTICE?!) that he broke the bolt holders OFF. That cost them a new grill and side lamp fixes. So I'm even more determined that I'm not paying for that kind of 'customer service' Too bad for them...I can remove hex nuts, too. Don't mess with granny's prized Toyota truck!!
Thank you. This is exactly what I needed to see. I bought bulbs and not the entire housing hahaha
Been thinking about changing my '96 Tacoma to Hella type with replaceable bulbs, for brighter light and avoid pulling the grille for a burned out light. Amazingly, my truck still has all it's original grille-clips & fasteners!

That's impressive! I was so happy when watching this to realize my grille isn't the only one held on with zip ties haha!
Thank you, for showing the spring on the housing. I couldn't figure out how it was supposed to stay in there with only 2 bolts. Off to find some springs...
Perfect directions. Thanks!
thank you for a concise and clear vid.
Dropping a LIKE on your video - Watching and Supporting, thanks for stopping by!
Ok I think I got this thank you. My grill clips are toast also!
Awesome video mate thanks
Great video thanks.
Some things with the 'newer' generation 'sealed beams' that didn't happen when they were one-piece glass. Some are made of plastic and can fade, yellow & scratch, just like most modern headlights. On the glass ones, with the halogen bulb sealed inside, The front glass lens is glued to the glass reflector bowl, and if the glue fails, water gets inside, eventually washing the 'silver' off. I discovered this after I bought my '96 Tacoma. All high & low beams worked, but so dim I might as well have been driving on the parking lights. Later, I mentioned this to the seller (not complaining 'cause I got a terrific deal on the truck) He claimed "I never drive at night"! :)
Thanks for posting, great accent 😄
My 1987 Mazda B2000 needs the right side sealed bean...looks like I'll be removing the grill too...THANKS
Thanks again
Have you noticed the passenger side headlight much brighter than the driver's side?
Is there an upgrade for these lamps? Mine are quite dim. Thanks.

I'm sure there are numerous aftermarket options of various types. But if I had you situation, I would just buy two new standard sealed beams bulbs and ensure that they are halogens. If yours are old and dim, it could just be that the vaporized tungsten from the filaments has settled on the inside of the glass and diminished their output. It could also be a problem with your charging system such that they are not receiving the proper amount of electricity.

WorseThanChiggers thanks. Probably originals from 1995. Will look into replacements. Cheers!

You can buy LED updates but be careful you understand the method for replacing them. You may have to buy an adapter in addition to the light kit. Check out the KZread videos regarding the process before you commit. They do provide a much brighter light.
Thank you sir! Wish you had a link to the headlights.

Good eye! It's a SpecTools OverDriver multi-speed ratcheting screwdriver and is one of my favorite hand tools.

Those old brittle clips are certainly difficult to remove without breaking them.
The actual reason you do not touch the bulb when you replace it is because the hot bulb burns off oil from your skin inside the headlight housing and causes it to be dull and dirty looking on the inside.

Yes, perhaps that could possibly be an additional problem. The main concerns are that the oils and proteins transferred to the bulb's envelope result in areas of glass that burn hotter than the rest. The primary claim is that this uneven heating interferes with the interaction between the tungsten and the halogen gas and the intended process of redepositing the resulting compound back onto the filament, all resulting in premature filament failure. It is also claimed that, in extreme cases, the uneven heating can etch the quartz glass creating weak spots that may eventually cause the glass to crack or explode. It's the same science behind high-output bulbs used for theater and film projection.

I have a 97 tacoma I messed up the inside of the headlights by touching the bulbs they worked O.K. but appearance was not very good. Fortunately this particular model has metal clips and sealant which lets you remove the front lens. I cleaned the inside of the housing and lens and they look bright and shiny now.
On my 95 Tacoma there is 5 lower mounting clips and they are very hard to remove without breaking.

That is a very true statement.
I'm having an issue removing the connector at the back in my 89 740 Volvo. I knew how to do the rest but I can't figure that out. Maybe I'm just being a pansy and not pulling hard enough. Lol.
Those plastic clips are available from Toyota. It's easy to replace them.
This explains why I have a harder time driving at night with the newer light bulbs. More glaring & bright to my eyes. I'm getting older, but it is more than just my eyes. It's the bulbs.
man... should have gone led retrofit... tis what i did when the seal went bad on mine

I'd rather have my stock lights till I get can spend the $500 for a real led upgrade. Not some cheap kit that throws light everywhere and blinds other drivers.

Those clips are so annoying. RIP grill off and zip tie pain in the ass grill. Got it.

Why not replace the other headlight at the same time??? Then you won't have a dim one, or have to go through the same process next year for the other headlight.... Silly

Good question. Perhaps I'm too cheap, it was a 22 year old beater truck, or "If it ain't broke...".
