And here I've been fighting for a half hour to try and get the trim head apart to restring it...thanks so much for this! That should be in the manual!

Thanks for the demos. I think the most important part for me when loading the string was to tug the two ends snug after every few turns to keep the string from twisting up and not feeding. Good demo. Easy to follow. You made my day !!

Thank you for this. I swear the instructions don't even tell me this and I wasted an hour earlier in the baking sun trying to get this back together.

Wow! Thanks so much!! This was so helpful! I have to admit my dad had always changed my spool when it needed it and it felt pretty good to do it on my own. I think my wife was impressed too….ok maybe not.

I hear ya. It's not my favorite, either, but sure of them are easy and others are a pain (same exact head type).

By what black arts have you made this eternally coiled line to pass straight through a straight tunnel? A spell? A magic snake charming flute? If I hadn't seen it done I would assume Ryobi made this as a throw away one and done product.

That problem isn't unique to this trimmer. Yes, it can be a bear. Best advice is to straighten the first few inches of string as much as possible to enable it to pass through. Otherwise, it's hard. Other trick is to twist the string a little bit while feeding it through. This gets the string inside to move around and "look" for the hole.

What's the best way to do this if you can see the arrows due to use? I've tried to turn it every which way and the string won't come through to the other side.

The arrows on the grey head are exactly aligned with the holes that the string comes out. The arrows on the knob you have to turn are aligned with the long groove that runs across the knob. Does that work?

Whenever I do this... it goes just like you're showing.. but when I turn on the weedeater all the string comes out both sides.

Most likely cause is winding the string the wrong direction (backwards) on the spool. Pay attention to which direction I'm winding it and make sure you're doing that. But if for some reason that isn't working, do it the opposite way you're doing it.

What model is this? I've had it with my old one who's string is too hard to replace. I have some 40v batteries already for my mower so I figured best to just get a 40V trimmer.

May just need to be cleaned out on the inside. After a while a lot of dirt and grass gets in there and can make it hard to turn.

Thank you for this tutorial. The Ryobi user manual is atrocious. The illustrations are for a model that is different than the actual trimmer. Additionally it is so poorly written. Useless!

You're welcome. And agreed, the manual isn't good. That's true of most weedeaters for some reason.
