How to replace RELOAD STRING on CRAFTSMAN 20V (or electric) string trimmer

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It's VERY easy to replace the line (string) on a Craftsman V20 battery-powered weedeater. You can also buy pre-wound replacement spools but will pay more. Here are links to those:
1) Craftsman brand pre-wound spool (1-pack): amzn.to/3NkNUAv (paid link)
2) Craftsman brand pre-wound spool (3-pack): amzn.to/3WXSYht (paid link)
3) Generic brand pre-wound spools (6-pack): amzn.to/3X1YWO7 (paid link)

    Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I'm a newly widowed woman. I bought this weed eater because I couldn't crank my late husband's heavy duty gas powered units. I needed some simple instructions and thankfully I found yours. My weed eater is running again! You are a blessing to me!

    I have a similar one. Craftsman really needs a better way to do this. It's very simple, but you have to really take care to wind it perfectly and then if you let off the tension at all when replacing the head it can all unwind and you have to start all over. I honestly think they do it this way just to sell more pre-wound spools.

Do you know how many feet fit on a reel. I started winding out of a 250 feet package but it just became twisted and I had to cut it. Would have been better to pull it out measure and cut it. Thanks

  • @FixEverythingYourself

    @FixEverythingYourself

    Күн бұрын

    They don't have to be wound perfectly but if the string isn't wound neatly, the layers of string tend to bind the string in place and it won't release all the time. So it's usually worth the extra minute or two to wind it neatly.

They look identical to the original spool that came with the trimmer however, I cannot for the life of me get the new spool to sit correctly. This video was helpful so I could respool the original insert with the new string by feels silly that I cant figure out how to just reseat a new spool correctly?! Any tips? Thanks!!!

  • @FixEverythingYourself

    @FixEverythingYourself

    Hmmm, that's odd. Have you turned the new spool back and forth when trying to get it to seat? Or maybe there's a little bit of gunk in the head where the spool goes and you just need to clean it out? Or something stuck on the spool that's preventing it from seating properly? These are just guesses, of course, nut based on your description the new spools are either a tiny bit too tall or there's something physically preventing them from seating in position. I'm not sure what else to recommend.

    I’m having the same problem. The spool looks identical, but if I stick my pinky in, the new one is tighter. The old spool goes back on just fine, but the new one won’t go all the way on. Serious design flaw, making the trimmer useless. I’ll try the self winding method, but I don’t know how long those plastic gears are going to hold up. Thanks for the video so I can at least get it to work somehow.

    Did you buy a new spool, or just re-string the original spool? It's possible that a replacement spool is a tiny bit bigger than the original and that's what's preventing the cap from going back on. I recommend comparing the width of the new spool to the old spool.

  • @Mrnormalsense

    @Mrnormalsense

    @@FixEverythingYourself so actually it’s the cap you put on once you have re strung the spool the very last part. So the last piece that closes it it broke doing yard work. So I had to get an off brand it seems like same size. So does the spring if just won’t seem to lock in place. Once I push the spring with the circular plastic to close it. Well it just won’t shut down. Not sure what to do. If Maybe I should buy a new spool or just buy an original part instead of off brand version one.

    Craftsman recommends no larger than 0.065" string, so I definitely wouldn't recommend trying 0.095". Also, if you're maintaining a 3-acre yard, this weedeater is going to take a while to do it. Perhaps that's all you have but since this is a one-string type of head, it's much less powerful than the two-string varieties.

    Can you please explain how to operate the "push button to release line"? I don't know why this is so hard to find online :) My neighbor lady's weed eater is a similar craftsman model but corded/plug in. There's a "push button to feed line" - button, yet you can't push that button and trigger at the same time, some safety/lock feature, pushing the button...just pushes the button - I dont see any line come out, and the next time I hit the trigger it doesn't look like any line feeds out.... :) I'm used to the gas, bop on the ground while hitting the trigger auto-feed feature. She says with this craftsman it's the same, but you can't do the trigger and feed-button at the same time, and like I said pushing the button while plugged in etc. - doesn't seem to do anything. Thanks, and good video on stringing.

  • @FixEverythingYourself

    @FixEverythingYourself

    2 ай бұрын

    A tiny bit of string releases every time the trigger is pulled and the head begins to spin from a dead stop. If the string is really short, you may have to stop-start 3-4 times to get enough string to extend. There's no button that releases the string and bumping the head on the ground doesn't work, either.

    @@FixEverythingYourself Hey thanks :) I saw this on my phone and meant to reply later on the laptop. Craftsman CMEST913 might be the model number, from an google-to-amazon search result. It's definitely what I'm dealing with, I just don't know if thats the model number or like an amazon sale-listing number etc. This is the link to the amazon page (below), "20V or electric". You see the picture with all the labels, the "adjustable handle".....and the "2-in-1 trimmer/edger" (with that bar that folds down)..... and then at the top: "push button feed" (user controls line with push of a button) ... but I swear when you push it the head doesn't move/nothing happens, and the trigger isn't allowed to be pressed at the same time. I'll try pushing it at a dead stop---trigger, deadstop, push button, trigger...dead stop.....etc., and see if line is weeping out, but I don't think so. I don't remember the brand I used. However, what's most important is that the package says "ROUND" on it to describe the string (not "twisted" or "square" or any other adjective). I have links in the Description field to replacement spools from Amazon but those include the plastic spool, not just the string.

    My edger somehow got backwards. The protective cover is on the same side as the handle. I have to hold the edger upside down and contourt my hands to use it. How can I reverse the two or one?

    Grab the center black plastic piece (shaped like an hourglass) on the shaft with one hand. Then with your other hand, pull the upper red part of the trimmer out as if you're trying to stretch the length of the trimmer. This will allow the shaft to loosen a little, then you can spin the shaft back to the correct position. You mustve accidentally turned it at some point.

    Is the string something other than 0.065" round string? If so, the type of string is likely the problem.

  • @coryhascal8379

    I can’t get my string to hold the tension. As soon as a put the cap on the spool, it just unwinds. Using 0.065 circle string and following your instructions.

    I don't recall how long the total amount of string is but the key is to stop winding when the spool gets as wide as shown in the video. But it's probably about 12-15 feet of string.

    You have to let it stop spinning, then pull the trigger and get it spinning again for string to come out. The string comes out right as the spool starts spinning after it was stopped. Just a little comes out at a time so you may have to do it a few times. If that still doesn't work, the string may be bound up inside and needs to be removed and reinstalled.

    Are you referring to the flat red cap that snaps into place to close the string inside after winding? If so, those can be purchased on Amazon. Here's a link to a cap that comes with replacement spools of string: amzn.to/3Q3kkAp Here's a link to just the cap itself: amzn.to/4aKI708

    I swear to God, every time I go to buy new pre wound spools from Lowes, I get the wrong damn bundle, so I have to go back to the damn store and return a torn open package. I hate being that customer, but they have two types for sale and only one spool is compatible with my trimmer. It appears the .080 spindle won't fit into place, but I'm tempted to spool it myself on the old empty spindle I have

    No, I don't think it will fit and the weedeater doesn't have enough power to use it. Could cause the weedeater to overheat or be damaged. Not exactly sure but I wouldn't advise using it.

    You're welcome. Also, I just stopped at Lowes, who sells this Craftsman weedeater, and I can't find any string of any brand that will work EXCEPT the pre-wound spools. And of course, those are more expensive than the string would be if they carried it...

  • @FixEverythingYourself

    @FixEverythingYourself

    Just pulling the trigger and having the spool speed up will cause some string to extend. So if you need more string, release the trigger, let the head slow down or stop, then pull the trigger again.

    I have this very question with mine. This isn’t a bump feeder type of weed trimmer? Some have a button I know but I was thinking you could tap it while it’s running just like many others, but it doesn’t seem to feed more line out.

  • @FixEverythingYourself

    @FixEverythingYourself

    Correct, this is not a bump-feed unit. Starting from a dead stop extends a little bit of string each time.

    The instructions say the string should be round. I haven't tried other shapes but considering this is a lower-end model, it's probably pretty touchy when it comes to the type of string.

    When that happens it's almost always because the string is wound in the wrong direction on the spool. Try winding the opposite direction of however you've been doing it. You should be able to see the direction I'm winding it in the video. If so, that's the direction to do it.

  • @Jorbangr_

    Ok, great. Maybe it's the triangle string but I'd suspect that somehow the string got on the wrong side of the spool while winding (and got wound in reverse). But sounds like you know what to watch for so good luck!
