    Couple of easy hints; 1. Every three oil changes, check and adjust the rear brakes if needed. Front brakes (pads) will wear out twice as fast if the rear brakes are not adjusted properly. 2. Once the drum is off and the springs are cleaned, take a pic for reference as well. As one side may have the e-brake hardware, the left/right sides may not be mirror images. 3. Another method - on the floor, lay out the new shoes & springs on top of each other exactly as they are to be assembled before tearing down the old parts. Take a pic of that too (hey, pics are free if you have the right phone). Plus, it'll give you an idea of what pieces you need to save vs discard. (It might save you the problem of digging thru the garbage can later!) 4. If you are not replacing the drums, you MUST have them re-surfaced when replacing the shoes. 5. Good habit is to buy the Combi Kit with new shoes. 6. Hold the two brake shoes together side by side. The shoe with the longer amount of ceramic/semi-metallic padding goes towards the REAR of the vehicle. 7. Never touch the inside of the drum (where it meets the pads) as skin oil & dirty fingers will reduce the braking power until it's burned off. If you, just clean it with brake cleaner. 8. You can put some lithium grease on the wheel studs when placing the lugs. It might save you (or a family member)from breaking your/their back while on a roadside sometime later. Good Luck!

    Thank you so much for this video, I followed it step-by-step and did the job myself. One tip, when it comes to replacing the lower spring, better to put that in partly before you attach the cable. I found trying to get it in the after the cable was pretty brutal on the spring. Thanks again, outstanding job! Why any auto manufacturer is still using drum brakes in 2004 is a mystery to me.

    So helpful!... I was not actually changing my brakes, but the emergency brake cable (it broke). But, to get to it, I had to take the brakes off, just like I was replacing them. When I got the drum off, the brakes were like new (I bought it used a few months ago), so I did not need to replace them. But, once I took them apart to replace the broken e-brake cable... your instructions on putting it all back together was a God send. By the way, I bought the brake cable from you guys... it was excellent quality and shipped very quickly.

    Clear instructions and great video, but just so diy people know, you should clean the parts that are being reused, and on the backing plate there are 6 raised areas where the shoes slide. those should be wire brushed and a light coat of brake grease applied. The adjuster should be lubed on the threads and also under the piece that slides off the other end. Also, make sure there is no leakage from either side where the pins come out of the cylinder at the top. Before reinstalling the drum, clean off the hub surface so it has no raised spots from rust accumulation. This will make sure the drum runs true when tightened down.

    The Ford Ranger with 9 inch drums have no clothespin plungers coming out of wheel cylinder. The shoes have a metal shape that inserts into wheel cylinder. The emergency brake lever has a hook that connects it to the rear shoe. The Ranger 10 inch drums have the traditional clothespin plungers which push against the brake shoes and a bolt on emergency brake lever which is secured to front side of rear shoe with a C clamp.

    Couple tips picked up from other vid sources. Before removing drum cover, block tires to press rolling, if necessary, and release parking brake . There is a inch size rubber plug on the bottom back side of the drum cover and when removed, one can lessen the brake grip and make it easier to remove the front cover at the beginning. One can adjust the brake using this same technique but in the opposite rotation. The wheel can turn freely and the hear slightest sound of contact friction when ready. Then bleed that break line to this brake. When all is through, and the truck is ready to drive backing up should self adjust parking brake.

    Nice video BUT you FORGOT to show people to add grease to the contact points. You put a small amount of grease on the 4-6 little nipples or those little high points on the backing plate. This allows the shoes to slide and have a nice lubricant to move easy vs metal on metal. Everything else is done very nice and easy to fallow, just picked up a 98 ranger and was seeing what I am about to get into I have done MANY and HATE doing drum brakes. 96 Chevy have been the WORSE for me lol.

    Ford put out a Technical Service Bulletin on the brake drums locking up on 2002 - 2009 Rangers. The problem was worst after the truck sat for a few hours, and the drum brakes would lock when you hit the brake the first few times after sitting. Their solution was to install new shoes, and then use silicone sealer on the BACK side of the backing plate, putting beads around where the axle passes through the backing plate, around wheel cylinder, over and around the heads of the "nails" that hold the cups and springs, around the rubber brake adjuster access plug, and around the point where the parking brake cable enters through the backing plate. It seems that moisture gets in and causes problems, so I am also using anti-seize where any parts need to move against each other. Hopefully that fixes this annoying problem.

    If you have problems removing the drum, remove the rubber plug from the back side of the plate, use a flat head screw driver or self adjuster tool to back the self adjuster off. Drum should come right off... may need a helpful tap with a hammer as well.

    I don't think the auto manufacturers could have come up with a more complex design for stopping a vehicle than drum brakes. Toyota used them on the back axle of the Corolla for years, long after other manufacturers converted to disc. You would think that discs would be more cost effective parts wise plus the labor associated with assembly.

  • @lobsterbark

    @lobsterbark

    Drum brakes last way longer between services if they aren't used too much. Thats why they make sense to use for the rear on a truck, most of the weight is up front and rear brakes aren't used as much anyways, so drums are way less maintenance than discs when used on the rear. Disks are have more surfaces that need to seal and interact with fluid. Getting good seals that last is one of the harder things to do when manufacturing anything. They have gotten good enough at it nowadays that drums are almost entirely obsolete, but this was not the case not that long ago.

    Ya Know, Guys/Girls. USA made cars have had had pretty much the same drum brakes since the mid 1950's. It seems to me that the rear drum brakes use far more parts than the front disc brake hardware uses. Disc brakes work so much better than drum brakes and so are much easier to to change out. Sorry.... I just don't get it.

    I watched this video to the 5 minute mark and realized the tools he uses made me give up hope i can fix my brakes. I tried another video and when they actually used pliers to undo the springs i felt way more in tune with that method. Using specialty tools on simple jobs make the job look way harder. This video intimidated me and made the job look difficult. This is my 4th ford ranger video and this guy is a good mechanic hell hes a great mechanic but sometimes i get confused when he uses complicated tools to do simple things. When he pulled out the spring tool i googled conversion kits to disc brakes. Once i saw the price i found another video that used the simple methods to do it and it was exactly what i needed to see.

    And what's the process when the drum does not slide easily off the axle? And your brake tool will not turn the adjustment spacer because it is rusted to all hell? Have beaten and pried the drum to get it past the brake pads but no luck. Is there another Choice besides getting my angle grinder out and cutting the drum in half? There's got to be a special trick out there somewhere, help! :/

    You can pull the retaining pins from the back and cut them off with wire clippers. This will allow the shoes to collapse inside the drums.

    I have a 96 Ford Ranger Ext Cab 2WD and just recently my right rear wheel cylinder is leaking pretty bad causing a very soft pedal. My Master cylinder is brand new. I've been having to use the E- Brake to stop, yes I know that's dangerous, but here's the kicker. The other night on the freeway I heard a loud banging noise coming from the rear. I pull over and that same tire with the bad cylinder is being held on by one lug nut the rest had sheered off. How in the hell could this happen with a bad wheel cylinder?

    You have to use the spring washer from the old set as the the parts kits don`t include that part it helps the e-brake move smoother. Mines an 02 that i`m doing right now and I had to replace every thing adjuster and all ,also the parts kit don`t include the brass anti friction washer on the star adjuster either you have to reuse off the old one. just a way of chincing for a buck I guess.

    I think you got the sequence wrong on the top springs. The green spring should sit behind the yellow spring. Also, a mini pry bar with an angled tip and some tape wrapped around the tip would prevent the wheel from getting gouged up from a screwdriver blade twisting and prying against it.
