You are supposed to torque the spindle nut in increments to 173 ft lbs while rotating the drum counterclockwise at least 10 revolutions at each step. Otherwise if you don't the bearing will fail quickly...

When worried about the shoes sliding or walking out from the pressure applied trying to put the cross spring on the top (you were having a hard with) take a large zip tie and torque it down around the outside of the shoes (in a big circle around the both sides) It always holds everything tight and eliminates the wheel cylinder from being able to push out the shaft. Once all the springs are attached, snip it off.

That was by far the best video I have seen so far. Very good. A few things I noticed that might add to what was a great job.... I would have replaced the brake cylinders even if they were ok. It makes no sense not to replace them as they are inexpensive and can fail at any time. Why do all that work and then maybe have to do it all again a week later because the brake cylinder has failed and started to leak fluid all over the new brake shoes. It's what's called a false economy. Many people, myself included find it's a lot easier to assemble all the components OFF the vehicle. Fit all the springs, adjusters, shoes, etc together and then fit them to the vehicle. You only then need to refit the emergency brake cable and the two shoe retainers. The last thing I would like to mention is that you were transferring a fair amount of grime from your dirty gloves to the friction material of the shoes. The shoe linings were clearly quite dirty by the time you had finished. That needs to be given a light sandpapering to remove any oily residues. Actually there is another thing. If you have to struggle to remove the drum which is almost always the case, I would replace the hub bearing because all the hammering, levering, jiggling is stressing the hub bearing to the point it may fail very soon afterwards if not replaced. Again, another false economy to not replace it. Cheers and be lucky.

30:40 it's a lot easier to just secure the brake shoe that has the parking brake connector down with the clip first, then leave the other side free and just connect your top and bottom springs to both, then its just a matter of pulling the brake shoe into place which takes little effort compared to pulling the spring in such an awkward position. Did it today on both sides of the focus and it worked fine.

After you get the axle nut on, youre supposed to rotate the drum counter-clockwise as you torque it down with at least 10 revolutions in between. Also, the stock axle nuts are not meant to be reused. This is just all straight from the manual. Otherwise, super helpful video!

Something that you should warn your viewers about, is that the drum/hub assembly is pressed on to the spindle from the factory. and it sometimes might require a hub puller that can be rented at some auto parts stores. and on the inside of the drum/hub assembly there is a tone ring for the ABS. in most cases the new drum/hub assembly doesn't come with a new tone ring on it. which means you will have to transfer the tone ring from the old drum/hub assembly to the new one. being very careful not to damage the magnet on the tone ring. or if the new drum/hub assembly comes with the tone ring pre installed then you can install the drum/hub assembly. but before doing so make sure and check the wheel speed sensor. it's located on the backing plate near the seal surface where the backing plate bolts on to the spindle. once located that particular area where the wheel speed sensor is should be clean of any debris and metal particles. because the tone ring is magnetic, if this part of the procedure is overlooked the ABS light on the instrument cluster will come on. and your anti lock braking system will not function.

Something you absolutely have to do to prevent bearing damage. You have to spin the hub counterclockwise while you tighten and torque the hub nut. That bearing will be shot soon. Take it from a Ford tech. You have to spin the drum a min of ten times as you tighten slowly. When your bearing fails it’s not the bearing. It’s installing like it was done in the video.

Pro tip. If the drum is really hard stuck, take an old focus front brake rotor and lug nut bolt it to the drum inverted and use a large gear puller. The rotor gives a better lip for the puller to hook onto. Slides right off. This tip will work on any stuck drum with lug studs pressed in. Rotor also can be hammered against.

Good logical vid, I have a couple points of feedback. 1. a small vice grip is a much better option to use to grip springs, rather than to teach public to use side cutters. The wrong person on side cutters will result in broken parts! 2. Ford says to never use the old axle nut! Maybe they just want to sell more parts, but the new nuts i am using from Ford have a bit of a squash to them, ie locking. Even the new brake drums came with a sheet of paper in them that states never use the old nuts. 3. Ford also says to spin the drum at least 10 times while torquing.

2003 focus wagon here.. very familiar with the rear drum replacling..always due to bearing failure... ive used drums from autozone and Oreillys.. both last only a couple of yrs and then the bearings will drone...Ive torqued them to spec and in stages while rotating the drumas its tightend in stages... my theory is that these aftermarket drums have poorly lubed bearings from the get go..its designed to fail... Side note: Having just had to replace these again I noticed the outer bearing in the hub is consistantly the one that goes and heres why: the inner bearing had grease in it still and turned smooth but its also a sealed bearing with rubber seals...the outer bearings in these are Not sealed and just have a standard metal dust sheild .. what happens is the grease is lost in the outers and the drum ends up droning.. solution would be decent sealed bearings in Both inner and outer positions... I added some heavy duty grease on the outer side and pressed it in and around that bearing so as its factory grease wears out, this extra bit of grease can help keep it lubed... the bearing on the outside is isolated from the inner brake parts so the grease should not affect brakes.. have to see how this holds up.. Great vid and breakdown.. however, I would never use snips to Hold the springs , his othe method was better.. lastly, that drum Needs to be rotated Counterclockwise as the torque is being applied to seat the bearings properly as per factory instruction.

I’d be careful with painting contact areas though like where the wheel meets the drum. We are no mechanical engineers and who knows what sort of effect it can have on how solid the wheel sits on afterwards when there is a layer of paint in between. A layer of paint is not as solid as steel of course and if it compresses due to dynamic loads (rotating wheel) then it may give the wheel nuts slack. But areas which don’t contact anything.. good idea.

I highly disagree about cutting old return springs when doing a drum brake job. The easiest and safest way that I would recommend is to remove your hold down springs, that way you can remove the shoes as a assembly and unhook the return springs. You can then repeat the process in reverse when reinstalling so you won't fight with the springs when installing. Remember every application bis different but still serves the same function. Another tip for cleaning brakes. Use water and dawn dissoap to clean the area and new parts to remove dirt, oil and other foreign matter

That upper springs can be put on before going over the wheel cylinder. I like that he cleaned that adjuster, I didn’t clean mine, but wish I did. I know it moves so should work okay. If the line fitting strips, just remove the line at the other end, then remove it with the wheel cylinder. Slightly tweak the line to get it off, but watch not to kink it. Bench vise to remove the line. (Cannot buy a line pre-bent line, no one sells it, even the dealer). Then file the rounded fitting so a adjustable wrench can tighten it. If you can file it to a 10mm that’s the best, since it’s a 11mm. Then you can use a tubing wrench to tighten it.

Vice grips work a lot better than a wire cutter for those Springs! Grab the spring in the middle with the grips

Just take the pins and the lower spring out first, the whole shoe assembly comes off, then you can easily take those top springs off without any pliers, reverse order for assembly.

Good that i watch this Ford Focus Mk1 specific drum brake video… all the generic drum brake videos on KZread show that you can just take off the drum after removing the wheel. Apparently with this Focus you also need to remove the center nut. Could have been hammering on the drum for a long time if i didn’t know that lol.

My new drums from Advance didn't have the metal seal/clip thing on the end of the drum hum by the bearing. So I needed to take my old ones off of old drums.

I would change the wheel cylinders, staring to leak. My drum was so tight to the shoes on one side. Could not rotate drum by hand, got to remove it and check why it’s so tight and also forgot the ABS ring swap.

I wish you mentioned that the brake drum needs the abs wheel sensor, replaced or swapped old to new. If you don't buy the drum with abs sensor. Made that mistake and have a very pissed off friend bc abs light came on after my brake job.

Personally I would use long nose pliers to hold a cable I had no intention of cutting instead of wire cutters, while you know how sharp your tools are and how much pressure to use to grip, it only takes a momentary lapse of concentration to create a much bigger job for yourself or create a weakness in the cable that could break in the future

I purchased a 2007 focus and I hit a pothole and my car got messed up my rear drum brake on the driver side did not need to be pried away from the plate it has already separated by about two inches where he was puting the screwdriver in and the entire drum dangles the face of the drum can be moved all around without moving the plate behind it I'm not sure I ever seen anything like it before
