Just wanted to say thanks for this video. I changed my rear drum breaks on my 2003 Accord today using your video and the video from NutzAboutBoltz. The breaks have been on there since I bought the car in 2007 and just started grinding. After I opened up the passenger's side break, it turns out that the one of the pins holding the shoes had broken due to rust and the shoe was out of alignment. In either case, the shoes were worn down to the metal and needed replacement, so it was about time. Everything went similarly to your video except getting that main spring was a super difficult, I had to try several times. I missed getting the fork into the slot when putting on the spring. After 5 attempts I finally got it on. It's probably easier if you have some help, you did it so easily which is really worth noting. Like you said, easier said than done. The only other thing that didn't go smoothly was that I forgot to pinch the break line, so the breaks expanded a bit, so when I put on the drum, it was tight. I had to bleed the breaks and then adjust them again. In any case, big thanks for this video. It's really not that hard of a job with such good videos.

Did you replace the drums ? I have metal on metal wear too and preparing to do the job. Isn't it possible to push the pistons back in with a C clamp or even with pliers why did you have to bleed it ?

I went through this DIY and huge thanks to Jim. There is no way i could have done it without his tutorial. I had to watch it many times over several days to learn and be prepared. I even took step by step notes that i printed and that turned out essential. I had to replace a leaking wheel cylinder too and used his other excellent video for that too. I don't have a garage and had to to it on a parking lot which adds a bit of pressure (no overnight car on stands allowed). I ran into trouble with the bigger horizontal spring because i did not have the right tool. You absolutely need a good vice grip plier or an 8 inch leveraged cutter plier . I had a strong 9 inch regular plier and that won't work, it not enough grasping force for the spring. After 3 hours i gave up went to a tool store and bought a vice grip plier, and it went just like a charm, in 10 seconds it worked immediately but i recommend watching that step many times, it's the hardest. For bleeding the brakes I use a manual 3 liter hand pump from Schwaben with a universal reservoir adapter. I highly recommend that. It took only 2 minutes. So if you are preparing to do this DIY, make sure you have the right plier tool, it's a must ! Rewatching the video, i realized Jim is an expert and a gentleman too. Thanks again Jim.

Great video thanks for the help. I was a little hesitant when I first saw my brakes but now I feel like I can do it. Thanks again for all the tricks. The camera angle was good but I feel like you can add a little more light next time to help the newbies like me to follow every step.

So what do you do if the piston actually falls out? Is it a bad piston, or can you reassemble it and keep using it? If so, how can you tell if your piston has gone bad or if it isnt bad and you can keep reusing? Sorry, thank you.

Wish it would have started with taking the drum off to see how that's done. I'm assuming it just pulls off.

First put a rage again a side of the drum, hammer on the rag, then repeat on the other side. Should shock the drum to remove. If not read on. You can buy two screws that you can insert to remove the drum. there are two threaded holes on the face of the drum. Forgot the size of the screws but it's standard to remove any drum. The screws will push against the back plate and force the drum off it.

Yea just pulls off, lol. Mine hadn't been removed since time began so it took some not so gentle persuasion (i.e. large hammer and puller)

One thing you didn't mention is to to either replace the brake drum or measure the inside diameter to make sure it isn't too far worn and resurface it with a brake lathe. As the drum wears the inside diameter gets larger, that is why MAX DIAMETER is embossed in the outside of the drum. Failure to replace/ resurface the drum can cause at minimum brake squeal and reduced effectiveness of the brakes.
