It's really important to make sure this valve is working correctly on your water heater. Test it annually, and replace it if it leaks!

@rickarchambault4756 it's a double edge sword. If you flush it you could have a leak that sediment was blocking. Or cause one due to negative pressure. But yes it. Is a mechanical piece of equipment. The best maintenance advice I can give is clean out around the burner. Ie any dirt/hair. There's a reason most companies only warranty for a couple years.

I HAVE WATCHED A FEW OF YOUR VIDEOS. I DECIDED TO SAVE YOUR INFO SO I CAN WATCH MORE. YOU DISPELLED A FEW MYTHS AND WE ALL APPRECIATE THAT. I HATE COMMENTING BUT IN THIS CASE I HAD NO CHOICE. YOUR INFO IS VALUABLE AND OF COURSE VERY HELPFUL. I CAUGHT YOUR VIDEO ON REPLACING THE BALL VALVE AFTER HAVING TROUBLE DRAINING MY TANK. SURE ENOUGH AFTER INSTALLING THE BALL VALVE & DRAINING THE TANK A FEW TIMES I TESTED THE TEMPERATURE PRESSURE VALVE...IT LEAKED. I NEVER WOULD HAVE CHECKED THIS (WITH OUT SEEING YOUR VIDEOS) BUT BY DOING SO I NOTICED THERE IS A STICKER NEXT TO THE VALVE THAT STATES TO DO JUST WHAT YOU SAID, TEST AT LEAST ANNUALLY. I JIGGLED & FORCED IT CLOSED (SEVERAL TIMES) TO BUY ME TIME TILL THE NEXT MORNING. WENT AND GOT ONE AND AM INSTALLING TODAY. I ALWAYS USE IT TO DRAIN THE TANK BUT WHEN IT WAS FULL OF H20 AND I ACTUALLY TESTED IT AFTER REFILLING THE TANK, THAT IS WHEN IT FAILED. JUST OPENING IT DOES NOT TEST IT. I LEARNED QUITE A BIT OF INFO BY READING THE COMMENTS WITH YOUR RESPONSES AS WELL. THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS I APPRECIATE YOUR INFORMATION THAT BOLSTERS OUR EXISTING KNOWLEDGE AND INFORMS US SO WE CAN DO THE JOB CORRECTLY AND NOT ONLY FIX PROBLEMS BUT SEEK TO IDENTIFY PENDING PROBLEMS. FOR EXAMPLE THE T&P VALVE IN MY CASE WAS SPEWING H20. ALSO THE TAPE AND PLUMBERS DOPE IN CONJUNCTION WAS NEWS TO ME ALBEIT THE CORRECT WAY. ASK MOST PEOPLE AND THE WILL NOT KNOW YOU NEED TO WRAP THE TAPE AGAINST THE THREADS. THE LIST GOES ON.

Well, a few days ago it must have popped open because I noticed the wall of my bathroom was wet. I looked for the source of water and it was from the long drain downtube. I called the number on the sticker of my water heater and they would love to come out for $99 to tell me what this video just showed me. @@Dnyce07 Apologies for the confusion: If you have a steady stream of water coming out of the drain pipe attached to your T&P valve, you need a new T&P valve. The heater itself is likely just fine. It sounds like your T&P valve is no longer seating correctly, and is therefore not closing all the way, so water is leaking out of the tank through the valve. Replace the valve only, and see if that solves the issue. Good luck!

Just a word of advice, if it's leaking and it's a few years old, don't test it, just get a new one. When I tested mine, it wouldn't shut off. I ended up having to scramble to place a bucket, shut off the power to the water heater, and shut off the cold water (which required a step stool to get to). I'm guessing that the cold-water shutoff was placed high in case a larger tank was installed. Luckily, I had a step ladder nearby. That being said, this video was well worth watching. The old one was full of sediment and would have caused a lot more of a mess if it opened up when I wasn't there. Picked up a replacement pressure relief valve from Lowes and installed it. At least that's one less thing that I need to worry about for a while. Now I just need to flush it and install a new anode rod.

Thank you very much for your video, packed with good information. Funny that every tutorial I watched for replacing this valve, the valve is on the side. Mine is on the top and tight as hell, went to take the valve off and the whole water heater turns. 😂

Wow - does the whole heater turn even with it full of water? Might have to see if you can find a helper to come hug the heater to counter-act the turning force!

Replaced mine 7-30-2021. It had a constant leak, even after opening it several times. The replacement was CASH ACME NCLX-5 SER 7 ONLY❗️ The rod was coated with what looked like sand. This TMP valve has only been replaced once over several years. Removing valve was easy. Draining water heater, took awhile.... it flowed really slow ( and I need to upgrade that valve too , like you did 👍🏻). Installed TMP valve and there are ZERO leaks. I kept my old TMP valve for future. Now I too have an expansion tank and when it was installed, all lines were soldered in. But I new nothing about testing it. And I don’t have that fancy pressure gauge, but do have old type air gauge which will give me some reading. Maybe I can get water pressure from district utility. Thank you for your many help videos. 7-31-2021 Today 8-1-2021 , Again I replaced the TMP valve and flushed the water heater. Didn’t think about the expansion tank until I watched another video you did, and my exp. tank had two thuds and no ping⚠️ Got a new Exp. tank, water pressure gauge, and pipe dope/ Teflon tape. My water pressure tested at 80 psi. The new Exp. tank is set at 40 psi. And I’m using a portable air pump that I have in my vehicle for tires. And just watching this video once again to get proper instructions to replace and install new Exp. Tank. Well it’s installed and I’ll check it though out the next few days and a couple weeks. My tank is only 2 Gal. and hangs having AIR PRESSURE Valve at bottom. The previous Exp. Tank was installed the same way, having no extra supports. 👍🏻💓❗️🇺🇸 Stay Safe.

Thanks for the great video. I had a drip from my drain line and followed the steps outlined in your video and successfully changed out my TP valve. My cpvc drain line was also glued, but as my water heater is in the attic and has a long drain line which directs the flow outside of the house. I ended up cutting the cpvc and installing a cpvc union below the new valve to make it easier the next time whenever either the TP valve or water heater is replaced. Other than that, I followed your steps exactly and will hopefully get a few more years out of my water heater.

Great video. I wish I had watched this before I replaced the Pressure Release Valve. The one I bought at the Home Improvement store wasn’t EXACTLY the same specification, so I am afraid that is why it still leaks about 1/2 - 1/3 gallon of water a day. Now, I have purchased the exact same valve as the original (thank goodness I kept the photo of it), the same manufacturer, the same model, the same specifications (thank you Amazon). Hopefully, that will solve the problem. Oh, I haven’t drained and flushed it since I bought the house 3 years ago, so just in case it is sediment blocking the valve I am going to drain and flush the tank at the same time … after watching your video “Draining and Flushing a hot water tank”. 😊
