How To Replace Nissan & Infiniti Spark Plug Tube Seals

You started the process of replacing the leaking valve cover gasket(s) on your Nissan or Infiniti. After pulling out the coil packs, you noticed there's oil on some of the coil packs. Where's the oil coming from? It's the spark plug tube seals! When the seals harden and lose their elasticity, oil will seep through the seals. So you go about looking for tube seal replacement kits and there's none to be found. Why? Because Nissan does not want you to replace them! The seals have a metal internal ring and are pressed into the valve cover. In addition, there's a baffle covering the seals where the baffle's spark plug tube hole diameter is smaller than the tube seal. There's no way to get them out using a seal removal tool! So what's the solution? Nissan's wants you, the owner, to buy a replacement (plastic) valve cover with new seals for a few hundred dollars. Well I found a way to get those seals out with a Dremel cut off tool and a pair of wire cutters. Then using tube seals for a 2010 Honda Civic (27mm internal diameter, 41mm external diameter), position two seals into each valve cover spark plug tube seal hole and secure in place with high temperature RTV. That's all it takes! The bottom seal of the 2 seals per hole solution is what fits around the spark plug tube. The top tube seal is used only as a spacer. You will have to wiggle the valve cover to get the bottom tube seal to fit over the spark plug tube. A blunt instrument, like a spoon, can be used to help press the seal over the tube.

This is a text book example of planned obsolescence, a method Manufacturers are making more money. By integrating parts (usually removeable for maintenance) they boost sales by making you buy more than what you want. In this case rather than just buying the seals Nissan has made you buy the whole rocker cover (only to do it again after a few years). Japanese are usually very honest (by their culture) and either have little to zero planned obsolescence. But Nissan is no longer Japanese, it is half Renault owned by French in europe which is not bound by the same codes which explains why Nissan is now doing this. Honda is still Japanese hence the Civic seals are what they are just seals, not locked into the rocker cover or heaven forbid the rocker cover is welded shut onto the head to make you buy a whole head just to replace a seal. Manufacturers are slowly conditioning and removing what it was and should be (seal replacement only) from living memory.

  • @hardlymovingpro

I know. I hear you. Which is why I had to come up with a way to replace those seals. A new valve cover with new seals were not available at any Retail Auto Parts suppliers. So I check with the dealer and they wanted a couple hundred dollars. Can you believe it? And the replacement cover is made out of plastic, not even aluminum alloy like the old days.

@Rawkfist1501 Replacing seals on a Honda (b16 b18 f22 h22 powering virtually all Honda) once the valve cover is off is literrally only seconds. Buying a whole valve cover just for the seals does not make it any easier. You have not replaced seals on a Honda otherwise you would know your argument fails. If oil is inside the tube, it is not leaking in from that seal. Oil gets in the tube at the bottom of the tube, where it screws into the cylinder head. Oil leaks past the threads and into the tube from the bottom. The tube must come out, and then the threads are sealed, and the tube is screwed back in.
