How To Replace Mercedes Thermostat (W204 C300) FCP Euro

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

► When performing maintenance on your Mercedes' cooling system you are bound to lose some coolant. This Genuine coolant is the best choice when it comes time to refill your cooling system. This coolant is designed to protect your radiator and engine from corrosion.
Due to supply chain issues, we are currently only able to offer BMW Genuine coolant. This G48 coolant is also compatible in all Mercedes Q1030002 and Q1030004 applications. The easiest way to determine this is that it's blue in color.
Due to the age of Q1030002 if original fill, it should be drained, flushed, and replaced with the modern Q1030004 fluid.
This fluid comes from BMW undiluted (100% strength). We recommend mixing this coolant with distilled water in a 50/50 coolant/water mix for most climates, for cold climates you will be better served mixing this coolant in a 60/40 coolant/water mix.

Thank you so much for this video. My mom has never allowed anyone to work on her 2007 C280 other than Mercedes dealerships, but she wanted to save money and needed this done so she entrusted me to do it since she knows I like to work on my own car. I'm not a mechanic by any means, but I know enough to get some things done. I used your video as a reference when needed just to double-check my work as I disassembled things. Very helpful for a gal like me!

Great video! It really helped me out a lot. I tried to take a short cut but that never worked so I followed your instructions and completed the job. I took it to a local parts store to clear the error code and they said it had to be cleared at the dealership so I drove it to another parts store and they were able to clear the error code. Not all parts stores have the same code readers so it does make a difference. I found that AZ is the best place to take it to...

Very helpful video. The 3.5 litre engines in the 2012-2014 models have a different configuration, though. Don’t need to remove vacuum pump or idler pulley on those, but is very tricky to remove one of the three screws holding the thermostat on due to the position of the hose running from the air filter to the intake manifold. Regardless, I was able to successfully replace my thermostat after watching this video.

AT 9:09, you say you push back the hose clip before reinserting the hose. Its designed to leave the hose clip in the locked position and simply push the hose back into the thermostat orifice. Much quicker and you'll know when it's locked in. Thanks for the video. Very helpful.

Very helpful. I've just done this job on our 2007 R171 SLK280 UK spec. helped by your video. A few comments. There is less space in front of the engine on an SLK. I found it easier to remove the vacuum pump first, then do the belt work. Removing the final screw holding the bracket for the vacuum switch or sensor on the front right of the engine makes getting the vacuum pump off and on easier around all those small hoses. I syphoned all the coolant out of the expansion bottle with a soft narrow hose and had little loss when the thermostat was pulled out. Initially I hadn’t realised that the 17mm socket is located on a boss on the belt tensioner not its central screw.

Depending on mileage if you are planning a thermostat replacement on some models it should be negligible extra labor to change the water pump, thermostat, tensioners, idler pulley and serpentine belt all at the same time. If done correctly it can save you from having to go back in a second time. This also gives a good baseline of wear for future tracking.

Would really be nice if you would record a video on replacing the Coolant Temperature Sensor as well... since I still have the P0128 code and it appears that needs to be replaced as well as the thermostat in most cases.

Thanks for the very helpful video!! Got a 2011 c350 with 30k kms. CEL lit up yesterday and scanner says P0128 (coolant thermostat). I wonder if i need to replace it right away or is it still drivable? My engine temp is still normal at 90deg. Should i replace that thermostat then ? Thanks!

Appreciate the video, good job! I may have to change out the thermostat on my 2010 C300 Sport and this will come in handy. I'm getting P0128 error from scanner and the most common fix appears to be either the thermostat or engine coolant temperature sensor. Car is running fine with no fault indicators but having a hard time trying to locate engine coolant temperature sensor on my model and was wondering if you could via video/pic show me where it's located. Any assistance appreciated.

Brilliant video but I need some troubleshooting help. When I pulled out the thermostat housing, the thermostat stayed in the engine. What do I do?

You are welcome. The thermostat should absolutely sound like something is rattling inside of it. There is a small metal ball in the bleed hole that should freely move around.

awesome video, easy to follow. thank you FCP. my 2007 c300 mercedez benz "engine check" icon came on my dash board with a code P0128 indicating "thermostat coolant temperature" and below says "thermostat regulating temp". i am using an OTC OBD2 scan tool to diagnose my car. i replaced the thermostat and put new coolant and the temperature on my dash board now showing a bit above 80degC fluctuate to 90degC top. the "check engine lights" coded P0128 is erased and gone now. is this normal after i replaced the thermostat? please help. thank you. i am watching the dash board temp closely if it will rise beyond as indicated above but it stays the same 80deg to 90 degC top for 2 days now. thanks again for your input.

Nice video. I would add that any o-rings like to be lightly coated with oil, or grease, before being pushed into the hole!
